DT Anthony Johnson released

Most of all this is good news for the prospects of JB/JAG on Sunday.

To me it appeared as if, Anthony Johnson's inside pass rush was the difference between Houston and the second half of the Dolphins game. I guess BB disagrees.

Bit concerned about Hughes. He was never any good without Molly Ringwald.

Look at the roster man. We have 55 players with TB and Ninko exemption. I think Eric Rowe is next to go to get us to 53 for our suspended returns. Hopefully we can IR Brisket for his "thumb" injury so we can add Johnson back if he clears waivers.

It's times like this when Pats fans can kind of be envious of the Rats.

They don't have 53 NFL* caliber players on their roster so don't need to deal with tough cuts like this.

All they need to worry about is putting in a claim on any player another team waives.

Rubbish.

Hughes went to the playoffs in 1994 with Christmas Vacation

He later went 11-5 in 2008 with Ferris Buellers Day Off

This year he went 3-0 with Home Alone and Weird Science

He's here just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness month.

[All of his coaches
all talk of his sacks
and the tackles that he never sent;
and wasn't he eeeeeea-sy,
wasn't he pretty...]

But are we getting the young, hungry Ferris Bueller Hughes, or the more recent Dutch, Curly Sue, Beethoven, Dennis the Menace Hughes? As they say in the business, it's better to get out a year too early...

kind of like chandler jones. what's up with patriots DEs and molly?

Surprised by the Johnson news, thought he was impressive for us early on. Hopefully, Hughes can have an impact for us.
I'm disappointed too, but it shows just how little what happens in pre-season means when you finally start to play "real" games.

Johnson earned that job with his preseason work, but once the house lights went on for real, he didn't show that same penetration ability. Hughes might just be a shot at another turnaround project for BB. He sure won't be wanting for familiar faces here in NE

the way I see it is that with his lost weight, his only trick was that he became a slower version of guys we already have on the roster (long, sheard, flowers) and we already have grissom on the practice squad.....

Hughes is here for a week or so.........and then the point is moot

I agree here. This is probably a one-week audition, and then he makes room for Ninkovich.
Sort of surprised they did it this way - Belichick has made a point of how much he likes this team, and has had a fraction of the roster management that we've witnessed in prior years. The alternative was wait another week and see if there is a need to place someone on IR rather than risk losing a player who is contributing. There's nothing obvious on Hughes' performance history to show that he's significantly better than Johnson, and Johnson played all preseason and a couple games.

Hughes is maybe as much as 40 lbs heavier than Johnson, so looks like this is more a decision related to the run-heavy opponents coming up in the next weeks than a verdict on Johnson. Could also be one of the big guys (Branch, Valentine, Brown) is a bit banged up.

Belichick seems to have decided to populate the front seven with a bunch of very big guys and a bunch of very fast guys and nothing much in between.

I hope this is just taking advantage of the opportunity to sign Hughes and doesn't bode ill for the health of biggies Brown, Branch or Valentine. IMO they've all been off to a strong start.

There's really no reason not to have both guys.

Just got done listening to Felger and Mazz ***** about us not going for Spielberg. Laughable, his latest work is a joke. Bill will get us vintage John Hughes.

Gotta say I'm a bit surprised. Based on that bio, Hughes sounds like an Akiem Hicks sort. I liked what Anthony Johnson had brought to the table so far, but not going to second-guess Belichick.
