I'm wondering why it's taken Game 3 of the series to be on broadcast TV (NBC). The last 2 games were on NBCSN. This is actually a good battle all things considered.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the first game was broadcast on NBC, as well as tonight's game, which was game four.

As you mentioned, games 2 and 3 were on NBCSN.

He was, and I agree that the conclusion felt rushed.

He plays a good role on "Vinyl," too, if you haven't checked it out already, which I assume you probably have.

Nope. Had a couple of other shows to catch up on. I've heard that one is a must see.

If you keep in mind that it has to start out a bit slow to develop the storyline, you won't be disappointed. I'm guessing that it will improve as it gets deeper into its seasons.

It's not "Boardwalk Empire" good, but it's definitely worth checking out.

What a travesty that final season was. HBO really screwed the pooch on that one. Hurried what was a good thing. Best season, by far, was season 3. Gyp Rosetti was the man.

No Richard Harrow ?

Loved Richard as well. But Gyp was a bad guy that I actually found myself rooting for.
I put Gyp there with Ralphie from The Sopranos. Great character and actor but glad he got taken out.

Hockey... there's a sport I never really got into. I have no real loyalties to any team but I am hoping Pittsburgh loses just because most Pens fans are also Steeler fans.

Hockey seems fun to play, although I was never exposed to it as a kid and never have played.

Now, this is a controversial take, just one watcher's opinion, and I don't want to offend anyone: I know I don't really "get" the game but the sport seems pretty luck oriented to my eye.

No doubt those guys are great skilled athletes but as a sport the game seems to be decided many times on luck. The puck is not round, so it takes unpredictable bounces all the time, many shots take weird unplanned deflections before going into the net. So, a lot has to go right for a really beautiful, legit goal to happen. Which is fine, it's like soccer in that regard. But then a lot of garbage goals seem to happen which make it look more exciting as far as the scoreline is concerned, but those garbage goals just leave me shaking my head wondering how a fluke goal like that could decide a game.

Another thing that I find tough to take is the repetitiveness of the game. Seems all possessions boil down to the same template: Battle for and recover puck, pass up and out of zone, gain scoring zone (carry/pass/dump), fire puck on net if you have a prayer, if not cycle puck around until a defender is out of position and then fire and hope you beat the goalie. All the while praying that none of your difficult passes take a weird bounce or go astray. Again, occasionally the game will dictate a really juicy scoring opportunity that is awesome to watch. But it's almost like watching the laundry in the spin cycle for two hours and waiting for the one or two interesting things to happen.

You should have just left it at not following hockey.

Nah. I could have done that but I'd rather explain why. I figured it would be either, a) thought provoking/conversation sparking or, b) make me look like an idiot to people who love hockey. Either way, the comment would be entertaining.

I used to play hockey for 18 years, but with my time as valuable as it is now, I can't bring myself to watch it anymore. Have to agree with mikjd, it is kinda boring to watch, and had never thought about that luck angle to a lot of the goals but he's right.

In hockey, players put themselves at risk by trying to screen the goalie and set themselves into position to cause deflections with both their sticks and their bodies.

That's not luck. That's strategy. The 'puck luck' is generally no different than the luck after a tipped pass or a fumble in football, or the ball hitting the lip of the grass in baseball, or tipped rebounds/blocks in basketball.

Sure, but hockey seems to be much much more dependent on things like that to my eye. How many base hits are the result of the ball taking a bad hop because of the grass or a base? Almost none. Football has the tipped pass and the fumble and where the ball goes after that is luck, but they are rare unplanned and what causes those things: good plays by the defense punishing the offense... rarely does luck help the offense score (one reason good players and teams emphasize ball control and BJGE was given regular run here for a while. Turnovers always suck in any sport but one where luck plays a part should be minimized). Basketball has very little luck involved as blocks and tip ins are skill oriented. About the luckiest thing in basketball is a terrible shot that banks in unplanned. Very rarely happens at the highest level, but happens sometimes at low levels (it counts on the scoreboard but no one respects it).

In hockey, getting deflections are part of the strategy but I find it hard to take it when players routinely strategize luck in helping them score.

Compare it to other "goal scoring" games, lacrosse and soccer. Hoping you get lucky is never a part of the strategy to score in those sports. No one ever says, I'm going to fire this thing towards the goal, hope it takes a deflection, then hope the deflection goes into the net.

Sucks so much the Pens are going to win this...beyond pissed

You don't understand what luck is, then.

You are leaving out the most important shots on goal ...
Good teams and/or the better team that day tend to take more of them from better angles ... that's not luck.
NHL caliber goalies are so good and big that without interference they will stop almost 100% of the pucks.
So it's talent and strategy to keep the goalie off balance to enhance pucks that end up in the net.

rooting for penguins...conor sheary was my dorm mate at cushing years ago

I initially had a difficult time rooting for the Pens due to the fact that most are also Steeler fans, but having Boston University alums Lovejoy, Bonino, and HC Mike Sullivan have made it acceptable for me.

By the way, if I'm HC Mike Sullivan, I "Bill Belichick" Mark Andre-Fleury and save tons of money against the salary cap next season. The rookie Murray looks like he's ready to take over permanently.

I could never..and will never root for the Pens no matter who goes there.

It all goes back to Matt Cooke..Orpik..and now Letang (scumbag) and Crosby who is such a *****. I love Malkin and he will actually back it up and get rough. Also like Hagelin..but that's about it

Sucks because the Sharks players i saw a lot of in Worcester in the AHL. Pavs..Hertl..Vlasic ect

I expected more fight from San Jose, so I'm definitely disappointed in that aspect.
