Hmm . . . there $eem$ to be $omething mi$$ing from thi$ argument . . . but I ¢an't quite tell what it i$ . . .

“I don’t hate the value they got out of the trade as much as I just hate giving up on a guy like Chandler Jones,” Monson said. “Obviously it’s more of an off-the-field concern than it is on the field. I think on the field, though, he’s just been such a good player for the Patriots. It’s a shame that they’ve decided they need to move on and get what isn’t a bad return but isn’t a great return in the trade in the other direction.”

Jones had one of several major contracts that were due to expire after this season, along with players like Jamie Collins, Dont’a Hightower and Malcom Butler. It was generally accepted that the Patriots could not afford to re-sign all four of them. There also was Jones’ incident at a Foxboro police station this past season. Monson said had that incident not occurred, this deal might not have been made.

“I don’t think so,” Monson said. “Like I said, purely on the field I think Jones is a very good player. Maybe not a truly elite guy, but definitely a solid player, and a Patriots kind of player — versatile, consistently strong, does the little things well, maybe won’t take over games but will always give you a pretty good result. I think if that [incident] doesn’t happen, the Patriots are going to extend him.”

Sam Monson on D&C: ‘I just hate giving up on a guy like Chandler Jones’

They can't afford everybody, and he is the most expendable of the group that includes him, Butler, Collins, and HT. That's the whole story, but unfortunately doesn't make for interesting radio.

i like monson except for the brady is declining garbage..

he also thinks long is done and struggles against the run. says it's gotten worse over the years..

I really dont think the whole synthetic weed thing factored in at all, the pats knew they wernt going to be able to extend him. I guess its easy for people who rent privy to that info or what a cap is to say that they would have resigned him

Long has been hurt; but its also not like we signed him to be the starter, Sheard will be starting with Nink

had no idea long was weak against the run. so was chandler though, gotta set the edge or belichick will lose his mind!

upshaw would be a nice add in this regard .... for the right price....he does a great job of setting the edge....problem is that it is what he does even on passing downs

How do these guys get these jobs?

Obviously, you do not need to be a real expert.. a make believe one will do just fine. It is almost like a ball washing circuit, this guy tells us about how great this guy is, and without checking the guy out he automatically becomes some sort of "exper"t.. then this newly ordained "expert" tells us how great the guy who referred him was.. so they all become experts.. D & C need an "expert" they can push around, so they call one of the other "experts" who tells them about this "expert" and the crap keeps running around in circles..

Love the fact that all these "experts" realize the Pats would not likely be able to re-sign all four of our main guys, but are all shocked that Jones was traded.

Let's take a look:

Butler = Must Re-Sign
Hightower = Must Re-Sign
Collins = MMMUUUSSSTTT Re-Sign

All three of these guys are Pro Bowl caliber players at positions of really no depth.

Jones = Good/Pro Bowl caliber player, but with several options to replace his production.

Yeah, it's pretty weird. The writing's been on the wall since 2014 at least, when it became clear that Jones, Collins and Hightower would all command premium contracts. And when the Pats proceeded to draft two DEs (and sign another one) last offseason, that pretty much cemented it. Every move the Pats have since 2014--including letting Revis walk--has been fundamentally about keeping Hightower, Collins, and McCourty long-term. It's been a topic of discussion here on this forum since then. I have no idea why anyone was surprised by this, since it's well within the Pats' MO.

Anyone with even a basic understanding of the team, how the cap works, and how the Pats handle their assets should have seen a Jones trade as a distinct possibility all along, and definitely should not have been shocked by it.

That PFF was surprised just further hammers home the larger point that they collectively don't really know much about football. It's not like you have to follow the Pats closely to be able to trace back the logic after the fact. Bill Barnwell seemed to figure it out pretty easily, and he actively dislikes the Pats and doesn't cover them very much.

I like Chandler Jones and he is a good player. However I just cannot picture other teams quaking in their cleats wondering how to scheme against him. He is not quick as a cat.

´´Gotten worse`` is pretty natural. Ask him one person besides Brady that got better after 30s... Long is not gonna be a starter he is probably be insurance/good locker room guy for cheap. He is playing for 3m if he get something like 5 sacks he was REALLY GOOD piece... They are set at DE

but if he wrote a pro pats article you'd be the first one to start a brand new thread.

Instead of talking out of your ass and getting things completely wrong, feel free to go back and look at my position on PFF.

The synthetic weed imbruglio didn't help.

100% agree, but wouldn't be funny if he starts drawing holding calls when he routinely gets choked out now that he is in a new uniform. It would verify that the refs are out to get us lol.
