How the Patriots can create even more cap space

$26 million in cap space AFTER a Hightower extension? I am salivating at the thought.

great write up Miguel!

Don't release him Miguel!
Chris Jones is my son-in-law's name

I know LaFell is much-maligned but I'm still of the mindset that he was more hurt that we know. With that said if the FO cuts him and hes picked up somewhere else, then that most likely means the injury was a contributing factor but not THE factor which justified in their minds his release.

I also think that Cannon still has value but not at $3m. His play these last two years does not justify his cap slot. With Scar back as his PC we'll find out soon enough if he should be on this team. Maybe get him to agree to a restructure and see how he does this offseason & camp before cutting him if he show nothing.

Lastly I don't support cutting Branch. He was very good last year. They can get one more very good year out of him that justifies his cap slot.

Cutting guys only makes sense if you KNOW you will be better in the short and potentially long term. Just having cap space doesn't mean you get better. Sometimes its better to stand pat.

Everything else Miguel says makes complete sense.

Good stuff here. Lots of moves can be made, and the moves you think will happen absolutely should happen.

I also think they should really explore trading C. Jones.

I don't think he's gonna be worth what he's gonna get paid

Way too draconian for me. I want Chandler Jones, Ninkovich, Vollmer, and Branch on this team, as well as LaFell and Amendola. Create space though extensions, cut TE Chandler and Cannon and build on what they have.

REMINDER. Please note that I am NOT advocating nor I am suggesting that the Patriots do all of these salary-cap maneuvers.

Please suggest how I can make the above point clearer in the blog post.

It's plenty clear. Don't worry. I read Ivan's post as it was from his personal perspective and not that he thought you were advocating it.

BTW. Great job supporting the soup kitchen. Thanks for that and Patscap.

its very exciting as a fan to know the pats could go into FA with over 20 million but they have none of there own starters as FA only a hand full of ST guys to sign a weak FA class as far as guys that will hit the market and a weak Draft class with no first round pick,

so with that said i would not be looking to blow up a team that started 10-0 before the injury bug hit and a defense that was the best since 2007 i think the 13 million they have right now is more then a nuff to sign there own plus draft picks and camp vets to see who sticks and even go after one of the top FA running backs if they want

I kind of figured you weren't While reading it but if you put a disclaimer in it would help. If you already did and I missed it then my apology.

That disclaimer was in the post already in bold.

No worries I just increased its size.

Excellent use of hyperbole here. Doubt that my plan is blowing up the team.

The 13 million is not more than enough.

Besides signing their draft class the Pats have to

1.) Account for players 52 and 53 (900K)
2.) Pay for practice squad - 1.5m cap space
3.) Cushion for reached NLTBE 46-man active roster bonuses - 1.5m
4.) Account for injuries-Pats used 5m in cap space before season started on 8 IR,2 PUP+injury settlement and then had to replace 10 players during season
5.) Extending Collins and/or Butler will take up cap space

Standing pat does not help the team get younger at the positions that need to get younger at (WR and Offensive Tackle).

It's confusing to read the post because there are two things going on: moves that Miguel says the Pats could make and moves that he predicts they will make.

When I got to Vollmer I thought: whoah! Then I looked and saw it's not in bold and so I understood he wasn't predicting the Pats would do it. I'm still puzzled why it is there. Sure it's a possibility to save money -- but then you could save $4.8 million by cutting Sheard. Neither seems like a great idea to me. So I'm not sure why one possibility is included and the other not.

Not one of my Twitter followers ever brought up the idea of releasing Sheard. Same reason as I did not include Gronk. I did say that the cap savings for all players could be found on patscap.com

I have a buddy who knows the cap almost as well as Miguel does, and this is one of the reasons why I was against the Forte signing (the long argument with many of you in the Arian Foster thread) and Miguel just confirmed what I was saying as well.

Many of you don't understand the cap. You think we have 13 million right now to go blow. That's not how any of this works, and Miguel spelled it out beautifully for you all. Pats have some tough choices to make because they are indeed up against the cap.
