Jerod Mayo To IR

Maybe whatever happened to Mayo's shoulder normally would put him out only for a few weeks, but given that there's a max of 2 games left and Mayo is still hindered by his patellar tendon, BB felt someone else may be more helpful to the team right now. Does anyone know what the injury exactly is?

If he's healthy next year, and it's possible the shoulder is only three weeks worth or so, he could provide great leadership and production to a team that needs it.

The Pats don't need it. They have both in high and Collins, plus youth.

I could see him in the league, but why would the Patriots hold a roster spot?

Have one LB on practice squad and he is a rookie Kevin Synder.

Do they go practice squad route or a eligible free agent?

Would they add Ball or Iosofa for RB depth and go with what they have on defense?

Was thinking about Montee Ball as a sleeper who could "come out of nowhere" and surprise.

Most of us seem to have had him pretty much out of mind, but he has had time to get in shape and learn the playbook.

Fresh (hopefully motivated) legs.

This sucks ! I thought we were done with placing players on IR this year but the injury bug still hits this team.

He should call football a quit. Too many injuries. I know he is young, but the injuries are mounting up. I bet BB will hire him as LBs coach without batting an eye.

That's what I'm thinking. His body can't take the pounding that he's dishing out. Some guys are like that. Who was that little LB the Colts had who was always destroying himself?
Bob Sanders.

This is a real shame. But it was clear he hadn't fully recovered from the patella surgery yet. There is no question that the only way he stays with the Pats is if he take a huge pay cut or becomes a coach.

Even at the league minimum, he'd get well over a million. So if he wants to play for around $2MM plus incentives to 4, they will probably work things out, because it is well known that BB loves him....even if Felger and afew others here don't. ;)

Don't disregard the coaching thing. Mayo went all in as a Pat a while ago. He lives here now fulltime, and his family is deeply rooted in NE (Wrentham). He has young kids in school and loves area as well as the organization. If he wants to play, I don't think he'll get more than what the Pats offer, and if he retires, I'm sure there will be a job for him within the organization if he wants it.

This pretty much sums up how I feel about Mayo. He is going to be a good coach when he decides to hang up the spikes. Get well soon Jerod!

This years draft is said to be LB deep and with three in front of Mayo I don't see how he can be back unless its very cheap and viable.

I wouldn't expect this to have a significant impact on the game. As long as Collins and Hightower play a full game, we should be good.
And Freeney being back helps an immense amount as well.

Adios. Patriots save $$ on the cap.

They will draft a ILB..

If it weren't for the lifelong toll football takes on a guy's body, I'd say with considerable confidence:
  • Mayo will try a comeback.
  • He's unlikely to try it on a team that has guys as good as Hightower and Collins ahead of him.
But given the dangers, I can see him retiring, and in that case I agree coaching would likely appeal to him. I also can see the middle course where he hangs around the Pats, plays as needed, with the intention of retiring fairly soon and going into coaching then.

Wow! That sucks. Unfortunately, he may have played his last game in a Patriots' uniform. He is going to have to take another huge paycut to stay.

As long as Hightower and Collins are able to play, the Pats can overcome the loss.

Rob, I'd say Mayo is done in New England unless he take a jaw dropping cut in pay if he is going to be a Patriot next year. I'd go so far as to say he would have to take an incentive laden, can be cut in camp type deal. He's basically been a non factor for multiple years now and there is no way, shape or form the Patriots' tight cap can justify even remotely close to the money they are giving Mayo. Consider, he has been passed by a no name making minimum. What shocker for Mayo and his pro bowl like value only a couple of years ago.

Mayo was a good guy from all reports and a good Patriot. He's got lots of excellent football memories and a ring.......but he is also 30 and is an NFL casualty on a multiple basis in a relatively short period of time. Unless he has the fire in him that cannot separate from football -- understandable for those that do have the fire to wring every drop out of playing football they can -- I would find another passion/pursuit in life while he still has youth and health to go with it.
His name is big enough in the area where he could probably get some sorta sports gig and even a few local endorsements. This and the small fortune he has made allows him to pursue a wide variety of things - from coaching youth football, selling rare cars or coins, becoming a doctor or securities dealer, boating/fishing/golfing, volunteer, whatever the hell it is he does after he heals from this latest injury?? I hope it works out for him because it is a real long shot he will be a Patriot next year (and if he is it will be a testament to how much BB respects him).

Regardless of this latest injury, which is unfortunate news because his veteran knowledge and run stopping ability could have been tremendously helpful against the Broncos, it was all but certain that the team would not exercise his option this offseason at the salary he is commanding. They'll save some big money by not exercising the option and allowing him to go into free agency.

People writing his career off as done is a little over the top if you ask me. This was a guy coming off pro bowl and all pro selections before he had his knee blown out, then while coming back from that he had some injuries pile up as well. He's never been an injury prone player, he played at a very high level with stout, consistent football in the middle of this defense for a long time. He's only 29 years old, he still has a good 4-5 years left in this league if he can have a healthy offseason, training camp and preseason.

I can't see him retiring just yet, he still has some legitimate football left in him to be played... and it very well could still be on the Pats if he comes back at a significantly reduced salary as their 3rd LB

The guy was an amazing pick at #10 and has lived up to the draft capital that was invested in him to be on this team

Is 5 full Pro-Bowl-ish years worth a top 10 pick?

You can debate either side of that coin.

The only way to compensate for this loss is to draft a tall WR early.

Even if you just measured it in Pro-Bowls, i would say yes it was... but as we saw this year there are players that get snubbed because of popularity, or a player taking up 2 positions etc.. so they aren't a good indicator of a players overall success... but the fact that he also was a team captain and leader of the defense were other intangibles that made him a great player for us

I'd say yes. Which is unusual. Rarely does BB cut a high drafted player who buys in and that has a history of production but i think he does with Mayo.

Wish him well.
