Jamie Collins XP Block

Good news on Sheard. Reiss tweeted basically saying that Sheard says he's fine. Just got rolled up, kept out likely for precautionary reasons.

Will we see him try it more on field goals? One the one hand, I think they are awesome. On the other, I really don't want him to blow out a knee. Bad enough with Hightower being dinged up.

The man is 250 lbs. Just incredible.

If he jumped his highest to block that kick, the ball would have traveled underneath him

If he jumped his highest, he would have created a tear in the fabric of space-time. So, for game day, he generally likes to play it down a bit.

When you watch the replay he seems very casual prior to the snap...

Now the NFL world knows what we know about Jamie Collins..

Good.

I suspect that is the case with Cannon and Slater as well....hopefully

Collins is REALLY really good when he gets more of a running start...

Well, since you can't do that all the time, that is another example of situational football. Brilliant stuff.

If he gets there and blocks the kick, the Colts remain down 7, which mean the on-side kick, even if it goes horribly wrong for the Pats probably means OT instead of a loss.

But if he had been able to block the ball straight backwards instead of off to the side and out of bounds, Collins, with his speed, might have had a chance to run it the other way, which you can do now, for 2 points (if I'm wrong on 2 points, someone correct me, but I heard it was 2).

In that case, Pats up 9, game over.

Situational football.

If Belichick noticed this vulnerability in the Colts' kick-protection scheme (as he said he did postgame), would it have been wiser to keep this play in our back pocket for a more crucial moment in a future game? Obviously this would've been huge had Indy recovered the onside kick and scored a TD, so it wasn't completely wasteful.

As far as we know at this point, there is no future game. The Colts are on the Patriots' schedule once, and this play gave them a clean TD lead late in game. It was ideal timing, IMO.

cf. the Pats almost using the Edelman pass in KC last year.

Even if he never does it again, all he has to do is line up like he did yesterday and get into some snapper/holder/kickers head..

Is Collins always on the FG/XP defense unit, or only against certain teams?

Reiss' snap count article today sort of reads as if it's the latter, but not conclusively so. That's why I ask.

Anyone who bet on the Patriots at -6.5 must have been ECSTATIC about that blocked XP
