extension for Solder: 2 years, per Schefter

MY gut feelinig is that the deal is a $20.3M but it includes THIS year. That would put Solder around 6.76M per year. That would allow them to lower this years cap hit and still pay him well..

Again, the devil is in the details and I'll go with Miguel over any of the nitwits like Rappoport..

10 a year? Sounds a bit steep to me, then again it locks up a key cog in the oline and allows them to focus on developing talent elsewhere along the line.

If only Stork could recite the alphabet backwards so hr could get back on the field...

im surprised we don't have more people decrying how terrible Solder is. Great deal for the Pats and Solder

Looks to me like Schefter was first but not the first correct. He says $20.62M, Rapoport says $20.1M, and Garafolo has the magic number of $20.062M, which would put the total 3-year value at $27.5M on the dot. That's too round of a number for me to believe any of those other values being thrown around.

Great, now the question remains at left guard, I wanted BB to draft AJ Cann so bad, even though no versatility, you need to stabilize the position, we don't need a left guard who can play all over the line, we need a left guard to begin with.

I thought we had $3,000 cap space, how is this possible ? Capgate ? ;)

Solder was already factored in with a fairly high cap hit due to his fifth year option. In other words, no extra room needed to be freed up.

In a perfect world, we'd actually see a savings for 2015.

I thought the option for 2015 was included, damn it's a lot of dough

And I assume this frees up enough space that we can keep Chandler Jones too.

How would it do anything like that?

At best, we can go with @DaBruinz's suggestion that it may have lowered his cap hit for 2015, but even if true, it would be minimal.

Either way you look at it, It added nice sums to the 2016 and 2017 seasons, which may actually make it more difficult to keep Jones. We'll have to see how it works out, but It definitely didn't free up future money, that's for sure.

Wow! Good for Nate.
Ton of money. Way more than Gronkowski!

Well it's a tad bit risky. Hopefully his early play from last year was due to recovering from cancer. Aside from the Chargers game after the bad start he held up well for the most part.

@RapSheet
#Patriots give Nate Solder $20M fully guaranteed at signing & can’t franchise tag him after. Highest % of guarantee for a top 5 veteran OT

Is it possible that part of the guarantee is a large signing bonus, which is the majority of his 2015 salary?

So, $20.6mm new money, $7.4mm in 2015 salary, of which say $5mm converted to signing bonus. So an additional $15mm of the new money is guaranteed?

By my calculations, this lowers his 2015 cap number by $1.83M.

Per Jeff Howe:
Solder got a $12.5 million signing bonus and $20 million is guaranteed at signing.

Base Salary is $1.438M in 2015.
Base Salary is $6M in 2016. (Fully Guaranteed)

I believe that my suspicion is going to be proven correct.. Still have to wait and see 100%..

My guess is that Solder's new cap number is around $5.75M for this year. That takes into consideration any roster bonus and off-season work-out bonus.

I could have been clearer but I was really just referring to right now. We certainly have a squeeze coming in the next few years but those decisions should come this off-season or next.

I was really just reacting to the talk of trading Jones 5 days before week 1 because we were 3,000 under the cap. I assumed BB had a plan and was not about to fall into the same trap he did with Lawyer Milloy.

I understand that those decisions have to be made.
But there are moving parts. Mayo and Amendola's 2016 money for instance.
Don't have to to pick up both Hightower and Jones 2016 options either. And a rising cap.

only two years?? surprised they didn't give him a longer deal.
at least it's fully guaranteed.
