I've been singing the exact same tune all offseason about this. Brandon LaFell is the piece the Patriots have been missing for years, and his absence will be huge. Even more importantly, the Patriots have zero depth behind him. That is why I was really disappointed when they missed out on several decent veteran wide receivers earlier in the offseason, including Stevie Johnson.

Let's get a few things straight here: you could technically put Edelman, Amendola, or Gronkowski on the outside, but you are then taking away their strengths. Gronkowski is being wasted there as a full-time fixture while the two slot guys aren't big enough to really play the position effectively. LaFell may not be a "burner", but he could win jump balls, fade routes, and put stress on the safeties.

All offseason, many people have been grumbling that the Pats are dangerously thin with big bodied receivers. They don't necessarily need another LaFell (not like it's easy to find one), but just someone who can fill in adequately and know the playbook.

They waited until just two weeks ago, and now Reggie Wayne is wussed out. Wayne must be the world''s biggest tool, since he would have gotten the playing time and could have even been the starter for the year if he'd played well. Regardless, though, the front office waited all the way until nearly September before realizing Wayne is soft as the team he played for. Maybe they could have used the 400k wasted on Wayne (36 years old) and sweetened the pot to close the deal on Johnson or another veteran receiver earlier in the offseason. I know hindsight is 20/20, but again, the idea of not having a reliable outside receiver on the roster is a darn big deal and a situation that a team should not find itself in.

Sure, we have Dobson, who I admit I am probably lower on than most. The fact the Patriots were reportedly scrounging around desperately for a big bodied receiver, though, should give an indication this plan is not looking very promising.

I rarely criticize the Patriots. How could I? They are one of the most successful franchises in sports history who always plan very well and manage risk - but this was a big mistake. They misplayed this one and now they are in trouble. While there's no doubt the offense will still be very good with Gronk and Edelman, there will be more times in the first six weeks when the Patriots will run into a brick wall due to a scheme and personnel that cannot crack.

Are you a fantasy football enthusiast? Madden player?

I honestly think they'll be fine with what they have until LaFell returns.

Depth is certainly a concern, though. Just send some good thoughts Edelman's way.

Brady's won super bowls with 5'8 receivers before and they'll remain competitive with what they've got. Sure it can be improved, but that happens with injuries and sudden retirements. I'm happy so long as we don't have another Jabar Gaffney in the starters lineup.

Pour yourself a drink, Ice. All is well.

JE11, DA, Gronk and Chandler are your top 4 targets. 31 other teams will kill for that.

LaFell is back in late October.

Of the rest on the roster, 1 or 2 guys remaining will emerge. Maybe Cadet? Maybe Dobson? Maybe Lewis?

I hear what you are saying but when you look at the big picture, life ain't as bad as you are portraying it.

1. Its 5 games
2. 2 of those games should be easy wins
3. They will run a lot of 22
4. Dobson may be ok, we dont know yet
5. This is not the final roster
6. Edleman is not a slot receiver

I think you're way off base, but it makes sense that somebody who doesn't acknowledge the Brandon Gibson signing would have that opinion. At the time he got hurt, people were starting to think that he might knock Dobson off the roster.

Dobson is playing for his place. Harper too -- he may come in and surprise us.

Dobson is not on my radar.

Almost 3/4 of Brady's targets last year went to JE11, Gronk and LaFell.

IMO LaFell's targets get split between Chandler and DA.

Whatever Dobson gives the team is a bonus. I will not count on him. He has not earned it.

As long as our TEs stay healthy *knock, knock* the season should be smooth sailing offensively.

We'll be fine. We'll need Lafell down the stretch but I seriously can't see us losing any of our early games "because Lafell wasn't on the field."

Dobson will be more than fine...he will be drawing the weakest coverage.

Belichick and Brady. Give me those guys. Rest will get solved.Personally this is a freebie yr for me after they won the SB. Of course people will still question pats moves and the Steelers game thread will possibly make comments about putting in garrapolo or maybe that brady's suspension shouldve been kept or bulls**t like that , doesnt really matter to me.
Just my opinion.

We'll get a chance to see what they see in Cadet, he sure isn't here to be 3rd down rb.

Come in off the ledge. the last time they won a SB by leaning on a big deep threat WR was never.

It's amazing the difference a year makes. Last year, JoJo was seen as a poor free agent signing who didn't even make a single catch until game 3. Now he's a huge loss.

But have faith. Remember in 2013, the Patriots had the #3 scoring offense with receivers Edelman, Amendola, Dobson, and Thompkins, and a big contribution from TE Rob Gronkowski. Basically swap out one undrafted free agent (Thompkins) for another (Harper), and it's the same basic group although I really like the addition of Chandler.

We're obviously a better team with a healthy Lafell. But there's no reason to throw in the season without him.

LaFell, Gibson, and Tyms all were expected to be healthy, so more a bit of bad luck at the position than bad planning. In addition, we have not seen enough of Dobson to know what he can do. Also, we have a new weapon in Chandler and a bunch of RBs who can catch and run. Add in Edelman and a healthy Amendola and I think it is a bit early to be predicting doom.
