Howe: Butler missed flight, held out first three weeks of practice

BB is just communicating the truth. If you are lucky enough to play in the NFL (and especially for the Patriots) for a small fraction of your life, you should be 100% appreciative of the chance you're given during that short span.

Early is on time, on time is late, and late is a no go. Weather comes into play in getting to any job. Anyone who believes BB should cut players slack for being late doesn't know the dedication it takes to truly be great at something.
Yeah and butler himself seems to get it, I don't understand what the big deal is. 10 years ago before Twitter existed i doubt this is even a story

May 25 and May 26 are two different days. And you can stand by your erroneous claim all you want. It's a foolish claim. Do you think people needed to keep their appointments during the snowstorms all this winter, when mayors were asking people to stay home?

I would hope not.

Defend as you like, fact is better planning gets him where the other 89 were.

I don't get Belichick sometime. Does making what may be the Pats' starting LCB going into his second year miss three weeks of valuable offseason reps worth it to make a point to punish him for missing a flight?

Disagree about the importance of those reps. Obviously BB does also.

Consider, this gives other players those reps. Players new to the team. They need to learn, coaches need to see them and evaluate them. They already know what Butler can do, and did.

If anything, I'd take this as a vote of confidence in Butler as a CB, it says the importance of getting his head straight is greater than the need to practice his physical skills. Reports sound like he's taking it the right way, so no problem. It'll certainly send a message to the newcomers about being prima donnas. Too bad Spikes didn't get the memo.

BB knows what he has in Butler, hence the punishment. It is important that he is mature enough to be relyed on. He could have driven to another city with Flights out.

Find a way, Gronk with his crazy off season is where he should be, when he should be.

Glad he was doing the film work and weights. He is important to the team this year.

^this.

Bingo.

of course

Per source, the NFLPA is indeed looking into potential violation of CBA Article 21, Section 5(a) by the Patriots -- re: Malcolm Butler.

HILARIOUS.

And the fact there's people replying to that tweet implying they've "cheated" "again" "what a surprise".

OH MAN.

People are so petty and bitter, it's disgusting.

That must be why the NFL played in Buffalo during all that snow last year.

Oh, wait....

Bill. You're the greatest without a doubt. But this is ridiculous. Get off your high horse here. 3 weeks over being tardy due to something Butler couldn't even control? Without this guy we would not even have won ring #4 for the record. So you ban him for three weeks?

If there's something I missed then please point it out if there's another reason to this. Bill is the GOAT arguably we all know that. But I don't like seeing young potential guys get their hopes of opportunity dashed over being tardy one time.

He didn't ban him for three weeks, he was there the whole time in meetings watching film, lifting and going through other workouts. He held him out of 3 weeks of practice, which sounds like a lot but it was a total of 6 ota sessions. Butler seems to have been taking it in stride and understands what he has to do.

doesn't matter now...ESPN has blown this story up into another frontal assault on the Patriots and BB...see how easily they get our fans to go ballistic on our team for discipline decisions in June minicamp? "Don't look at the obvious raping and pillaging of YOUR team by Goodell Crime Inc. ,stupid Pats fans....look over HERE instead!! THIS is really really bad!!! You all should go crazy tearing away at your coach...Lord Roger Be Praised..we are not worthy...."

Ehh.... IF this is just about being late because of the weather closing down an airport, BB deserves the flack. This notion that weather doesn't matter, and you always have to have 500 backup plans in effect, is moronic. If this were any other team doing this, the same people defending this would be skewering that coach and team, and rightfully so.

Short of every player/coach/etc... actually living in, and never leaving, the stadium, the simple reality is that sometimes ****'s gonna happen.

right...and THIS shyt is basically a mouse turd blown up into a Triceratops dung heap. The kid was disciplined at a mini-camp. Call me up when it's REAL camp or preseason games, otherwise, I'll just chalk it up to Grumpy Cat being grumpy , as usual.

My point is, as everyone is scope locked on this "travesty", the Goon, his fat gimp Simp and the rest of the NFL offices are getting a reprieve from the press over this reprehensible dog and pony show being played out for what's going on 4 months now.

But that's on BB for doing something stupid enough* to take the heat off the places it should be. This isn't even an NFL issue. It's an NFLPA/CBA issue.

*Again, these posts are assuming that the situation arose solely due to the tardiness issue.

How could holding someone out of an optional practice ever be a violation? So it isn't mandatory for the players, but the team is obligated to put whoever shows up on the field?

You cannot assert that it isn't mandatory and therefor players can't be punished when the punishment is exclusion from said voluntary practice. It is a self-defeating argument.

Butler is a second year player. He needs reps as much or more than anyone else. Belichick has always said that the offseason for a second year player is critical because that is the year they make the biggest jump because it is the year they get their first full offseason in the organization.

I don't take this as a vote of confidence. I don't take it as him being in the dog house either. I just don't see it as a good thing because it can hinder Butler's development.

Paying attention to weather is something that has become much easier recently, there are a myriad of sites that tell us pretty much what will happen in the next 24/48 hours and some that tell us what will happen next month. Butler should have been paying attention.... and we all know how the Patriots pay attention to details.. this is also a very young team, and no one is above the team.

But in reality, this is much ado about nothing.. just a minor issue, this probably takes place more than we know for this team.. critiquing a minor situation such as this as somehow prophesying doom for this team is idiotic.

Maybe ESPN can spin this into some type of cheating conspiracy, or Tom Jackson can be interviewed and discuss how much the players hate their coach..

Or even better maybe they can spin this into a story about how BB is so butthurt over the deflate Bullshyt that he is taking it out on his players..

The need for some type of Pats Headlines supersedes the need for common sense..
