We are suppose to believe he hadn't gone that far back in McNally's texts before the interview? Garbage.

He knew about the texts but didn't address them because he had agreed to 1 interview with McNally barring any future circumstances. Not going that far back in the text messages is not a future circumstance. He knows he wasn't getting a 2nd interview, so he withholds the worst looking text messages because he doesn't want McNally to give any context to it while also getting to say how the Patriots were uncooperative. Yet Patriots counsel and McNally were willing to do a phone interview and it was declined.

Patriots being uncooperative is such bullsh*t and this is just more evidence of Wells was getting the NFL what it wanted. Without declining the 2nd interview the NFL would have never been able to punish the Patriots for being uncooperative. So Pats lose a 1st and 4th because this guy says he hadn't gone that far back in the texts.

the whole text message fiasco is a poor attempt by Wells to shame the Patriots. Who the hell uses text messages as grounds for a billion dollar industry anyway. My wife put it best when she said the whole wells report is trash and was presented with the end solution of hitting brady and the pats hard and then finding reasons to get to that conclusion.

Wells should be ashamed of this work and the effort he put into it.

This was such a misstep on the NFL and Goodell that its now going to be a nightmare they will not get out of.

And just to put a little perspective on this point.

The Patriots offered to allow Wells to do a phone interview.

Wells refused.

I guess getting at the truth was less important than being able to pin an all or nothing Uncooperative accusation on the Patriots.

The NFL has to focus on the tidbits they have which is swiss cheese science, one word "deflator" in the 243 page report (not sure why they left out Dorito Dink, haha), public perception created prior to the report via media leaks, Tom Brady's phone and of course the misleading interpretations of what actually happened through this whole circus because that's the only way they can win this battle.

I did not know about the phone interview possibility. Thanks for that.

On top of that: Wells's excuse after the fact is that they only looked at current-season text messages before their interview with McNally, so hadn't seen the 'deflator' text.

However, in the Wells report he said, in relation to the 'deflate yourself and give me your jkt' text, that he wasn't granted a second interview to question McNally about it. That text was sent in November of 2014.

Lies, end of story.

Seriously, you're being paid millions of dollars, why wouldn't you have read every single text between Jastremski and McNally prior to your interview? I would think you could easily read all of their correspondence in a matter of a day or two, they're just little tiny one sentence messages.

Saying "I didn't get to read those texts yet" is just an idiotic and lazy excuse. Yeah, you knew you were only getting one interview in the first place but you only decided to read 6 months' worth of texts beforehand, if that. @JMC00 is right, something smells very fishy.

Same reason why he asked Brady for his phone, he knew the NFL doesn't have the power per the CBA to demand it and that Brady is a big union guy...as soon as he said the expected "lol no" Wells could add to his "uncooperative" angle that he established once he knew he had jack in regards to what he was actually supposed to be investigating.

Ted Wells is a hired gun and a slimeball.

could you give me a page cite on this?

I have no idea about the methods they used to review the texts. Off the top of my head, though, I would think dumping them all in one document and then doing a search on certain keywords (like balls, footballs, PSI, 12.5, Brady, deflate, needle, bathroom, etc) would be one method.

If they knew about the "deflate" text from November, it would make sense to see if that term was used again. If they weren't aware of either "deflate/deflator" text before talking to McNally, then they aren't very good at their highly compensated jobs.

Exactly... Dump all the texts in one file, then Ctrl+F "deflat"... would catch any variance like "deflate", "deflated", "deflator", "deflating", etc. If your "crime" is deflating footballs, seems like that would be the first thing you'd look for. But, apparently, Wells didn't get around to it until several months and all of his interviews had all already passed.

Regular expressions :) deflat(e)|(ion)|(ing)|(or)

Patriots ball boy using the word deflator in other context in Text

-> suspended

Brett Favre text message evidence of sexual harassment

-> crickets

Why do they insist on Brady's phone if they have McNally's and Jeremski's??... Unless someone is trying to feed TMZ with some salient personal details of the Brady's life.

I think the NFL underestimated the traction and sensationalism of what they wrought.. the leaking of info to Bob Kravitz in the middle of the night and then releasing information in subsequent nights to select folks unleashed an unexpected beast.

The NFL lost control of what they were trying to achieve and created a firestorm of BS.. there is no statistical difference between Brady's numbers on the road(balls controlled by the other team) and the numbers at home(balls controlled by Pats).. on the biggest stage of the NFL #12 went 12/15, 125 yards and 2 TD in the 4th quarter to win that game.. PSI in footballs is no big deal.. but the NFL has allowed it to become a huge deal.. a perverse result of unintended consequences.

The texts and needing Brady's phone is baffling to me. It's not like they have one or two texts from Brady on McNally and Jastremski's phones and they believe they might be able to find more on Brady's phone. There are no texts from Brady to either of those two, at all.

[Edit to add: I was wrong. There are texts from Brady to Jastremski. Wells was aware of these.]

Regarding your second and third paragraphs, I believe the NFL knew what was going to happen when they leaked that information. Any negative story about the Patriots, no matter how minor, gets a lot of attention. There is no way people in the NFL offices were unaware of that.

I'll don my tinfoil hat and go a step further: Why is it that the Patriots rule violation from 8 years ago is consistently referenced by the media, but other teams don't get that treatment. If you read an article on the Saints, it's not going to mention their bounty program. Roethlisberger's rape has been buried and no commentator wonders how a proven rule-breaker like Tomlin can be allowed on the competition committee. The NFL has a tremendous influence on the media. If they want a particular story to go away, it does. The opposite is also true. If they want a story to persist, it will.

Wells wanted the second interview. Obviously, he has a huge ego. He thought he could get a jabloke like McNally to flip on TB12. He wouldn't have. But, Wells wanted to pinch him again.

He never wanted that interview
