Patriots to Release Alfonzo Dennard

Browner lost his job in Seattle and they let him walk without a serious contract offer. I would assume the reason in Seattle and New England was similar. He has a pretty limited skillset and no scheme or position versatility. His extremely high number of penalties was a liability as he constantly moved the chains for the opposing offense.

Maybe this is a precusor to Johnathan Joseph being dealt to the Pats.

He is reportedly on the block and would only be a $7.5m hit but with Dennard cut and $1.5m free it would really be like $6m. $6m cap hit for a #1 CB is pretty decent.

I would hope so. Joseph is a nice option for a CB1. He's not Revis, but not many CB's are. And, as you mention, the contract is a bargain.

If he can stay healthy ........

He wasn't even that bad last year. He just had Revis and Browner ahead of him and seemed to be dealing with an injury.

Logan Ryan was more noticeably bad last year

Here is a question that I've had in the back of my mind since the SB. At the end of the SB, with the game on the line, they had Revis and Browner on the field and needed a 3rd CB. Why was Butler chosen and not Ryan or any of the other DB?

The fact that the team put Logan on the field over Dennard suggests otherwise, barring injury.

Because they felt he was the 3rd best option.

He's missed 8 games in 6 years

That isn't really a stat line that lends itself to the view of "if he can stay healthy"

SEA dumped Browner b/c Byron Maxwell was a better player.

NE dumped Browner b/c they felt his performance did not justify his salary and by not being able to commit over the top help all the time, his skill set didn't line up with the changes in their scheme for 2015.

Despite starting them, he left numerous games last year due to injury.

I think there was a BB interview that explained this. It was mostly a gut feeling but it also had to do with the fact that Browner was begging to be allowed to cover Mathews. Once the Browner move was made, I think they just felt Butler was the right option against Kearse. It probably has more to do with being the right tool for the job than a hierarchy based decision.

Outside of Revis and Law, the Patriots have traditionally shaded a safety to one or both sides of the field to give their CB's help up top. Browner was no different than Dennard, Talib, Bodden, Samuel, Hobbs, etc. I don't think that was the primary reason for dumping him. I think his salary was... and I think it was a mistake. But it is what it is. Hopefully we're looking at a trade for a veteran CB (like Joseph) sooner rather than later.

Cost would be a consideration of course, and I wouldn't trade a 1st rounder, but given the value of good CBs and the difficulty obtaining them I wouldn't be surprised at a 2nd.

I would trade a 2nd, but I think Bill might be opposed to more than a 3rd.

We need to trade for a corner. This can't possibly be the group we take into camp let alone the season. And I don't want to get one during the season, I want him to have a lot of time getting to know the system during the offseason and preseason.

In the end, a lot went wrong in 2014 for Dennard. He was back in prison over the summer for a month. He rehabbed a shoulder injury from 2013.

With all that said, he still started the first four games and played OK. Then Browner shows up. Is inactive for several weeks and then IR'd with that all-of-the-sudden hamstring injury.

I suspect that if he contributed anything at all in special teams or at least was rumored to have major issues (technique or otherwise) playing the slot, he might have seen the field more than Ryan.

I also agree that Ryan was a tick or two less this past year than what he was in 2013. Hopefully he bounces back.

I'd be fine w/ Joseph.

I agree. However we may see more split safety than years past.

Still not sure of the reason w/ Browner. Cost for sure. Possibly could have to do with STs.
