Woody Johnson Clear Cut Tampered Re: Revis

HMMMMM.....interesting. Is woody as dumb as a fox. By putting it out there that that he wants revis back is he attempting to drive revis's asking price higher? ......Nah, he just has a case of Foot in Mouth disease. But it does give revis more leverage

he comments become a problem because: (1) the Patriots need to renegotiate their contract with Revis by the middle of March, before his cap number shoots to $25 million under the second, phony year of his two-year contract; (2) Revis now has leverage in his discussions via the knowledge that the Jets want him back.

Making Johnson’s comments more confusing is the fact that, when Revis was available last year, Johnson didn’t want him back, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation.
So if Johnson doesn’t want Revis back, why would Johnson say he did?

Belichick is not the owner of the Patriots.
No. But Belichick IS the General Manager. And this IS a clear case of tampering. And one that HE can press as said GM.

Woody saying he wants Revis back isn't going to drive Revis' asking price up. It's not like Revis didn't know he was a great CB before yesterday...

Words don't increase contract $$$$$, higher bids do.
I'm pretty sure Revis' agent, like all agents, will answer ALL phone calls during free agency....whether an owner publicly waxed poetic about his client or not.
And Revis should be insulted by this trivial notion that flattery will get his attention. The man chases dollars first and foremost. Have we all forgotten he chose to get paid by Tampa Bay...of all places.
Sixteen pages of nonsensical outrage

The fact of the matter is, tampering is against the rules. Period.

We can try to determine how much damage was done or not done, but the rule is in place for a reason.

Do you really want the Broncos in secret negotiations with Talib before or during the AFCCG?

Revis hasn't gone anywhere yet. And if we do lose Revis I doubt it will be because Woody said these things in a presser. I certainly think the Jets should be punished for their gaffe in procedure but it is hardly something to create a **** storm over. Realistically Woody's comments will have little to no impact on the Revis negotiations. If they are going to be punished it will most likely be for a procedural violation.

.....procedural violation.....like videotaping from the wrong part of a stadium?

I'm just going to again say a lot of you are likely going to be disappointed in the outcome of this, and leave it at that.

Key (and most cogent) term in your nonsensical post was "DURING free agency".

The basic effect of his words were to signal Revis that there IS a party out there willing to give him bigger bucks if he WAITS to free agency and not settle early with the Patriots who have every right to pursue a new contract UNFETTERRED by outside competing interests while he is UNDER CONTRACT.

That is clear and unambiguous. For those who don't understand that, that is their problem.

I don't expect much unless Kraft decides to push the issue. There will certainly be a fine, probably a loss of a pick and perhaps a swap of later round picks. If Kraft pushes hard, I would expect a swap of 3rd or maybe even 2nd round picks. Unfortunately I don't think Kraft will push hard. If this had anything close to the media coverage it would have if BB did this, I would expect good compensation. Sadly that type of media attention is only reserved for when the Pats or BB eff up.

Very likely, doesn't mean that the Patriots and their fans shouldn't push the matter as hard as possible though

Be prepared to be upset, then. Someone before said Kraft has been a "why can't we all just get along?", guy. I agree with that. His inaction after Spygate shows that to be the case on top of his unwavering support of Goodell after the Rice fiasco. It's definitely a weird behavior for a businessman who got to the position that he's in by not being a "why can't we all just get along?", guy.
True most likely what will happen. It's one thing if it were a slip of the tongue by guys like Andy Reid or John Mara but after spygate **** the jets.

When in doubt blame it on the pats, and it worked. The jest should have been punished, but nothing happened. The same year as spygate a jest employee was caught filming from a forbotten location in Gillette. He said he had authorazation whcih the pats denied giving him. Goodell did nothing. Thats all one needs to know about goodell. He has no integrity

That was the previous season. Mangini turned in the Pats cameraman in the first meeting of the following season for revenge.

Everyone knows that there are 32 teams that would want Revis on their team. What we don't know is how much are each team willing to pay for him to be on their team. What we learned yesterday is that at least one team is willing to pay him at least what the Patriots paid him this year. Just because a player is a great player doesn't mean that every team is willing to pay his asking price. This does make a difference its just a question of how much.

I believe that Kraft will do nothing here. So soon we forget how Kraft has responded in the past. Remember when we had our panties in a wad over Goodell's handling of Ray Rice? Kraft made it a deliberate point to be seen with the Commissioner and gave him his unqualified support. In ALL league matters Bob has been the peacemaker and conciliator. Acquiesed to Pats punishment in Spygate & apologized. Never sought to clarify the misunderstandings in the fan base as to exactly what the Pats accepted punishment for. Stepped in when Goodell was an utter failure getting the new CBA accepted by the players union and brokered an acceptable deal for both parties. This is who Kraft is. He may be a businessman but his style is not that of a Donald Trump. He's a consensus builder. So folks expecting Bob Kraft to push his butt buddy Roger Goodell to punish the Jets substantively (e.g. swap & loss of draft picks) will be disappointed. Me, I'm wicked pissed.

This is about as good an overview of what will likely happen as there is out there. THANK YOU!!!

You have a link to that? I remember it happened latter in the 07 season when the jest played in gillette. And mangina didn't turn the patriot camera man in, it was Tannenbaum the GM. I'm not saying your wrong i just don't remember it that way. If you had a link it would clear up the confusion.

We heard you the first time, but thank you for repeating that.

You know, the simple fact that Johnson's comments have become a distraction before the Pats are playing a playoff game is enough to make him deserve some punishment.

Could be a distraction to Revis if he has to answer some stupid reporters' questions. Already landed on BB's plate.

There's a reason owners/GMs can't do this sort of thing. As someone upthread stated - imagine if Denver had been whispering to Talib before the AFCCG last year.

It was almost definitely 2006.

Yes, Revis is technically restricted from the open market until the Patriots relinquish control....but.....

Ooh, you ALMOST had it for a second.
