There were early reports that the Patriots were looking to extend Revis right away, followed by reports that talks were shelved until after the season (if they had in fact every begun at all, which seems unlikely.)
Does anyone think that Revis's contract structure, while absurd in year 2, might actually provide the Patriots with some leverage?
Sure, we all know it would appear absolutely bonkers to take on a $20M contract and $26M cap hit for 2015, should Revis want to test free agency. However, look at it from Revis's perspective:
Next year he will be 30 years old, not exactly a prime age for cornerbacks. Should the Patriots play hard ball and hold him to his contract, he may not be thrilled with a one-year deal at this point in his career, even though it is for $20M. Not when guys like Peterson, Sherman, and Haden are cashing in on $50M+ in real money, and not when he knows his free agency won't commence again until he is 31 (the regular season in 2016.)
I'm just saying, what a game of chicken that would be, if the Patriots did not work out a contract extension but also did not cut him, taking their chances that they could extend him sometime during the next offseason, lessening their cap hit.
Maybe I'm wrong and Revis would love another giant one-year contract.
Thoughts?
