There were early reports that the Patriots were looking to extend Revis right away, followed by reports that talks were shelved until after the season (if they had in fact every begun at all, which seems unlikely.)

Does anyone think that Revis's contract structure, while absurd in year 2, might actually provide the Patriots with some leverage?

Sure, we all know it would appear absolutely bonkers to take on a $20M contract and $26M cap hit for 2015, should Revis want to test free agency. However, look at it from Revis's perspective:

Next year he will be 30 years old, not exactly a prime age for cornerbacks. Should the Patriots play hard ball and hold him to his contract, he may not be thrilled with a one-year deal at this point in his career, even though it is for $20M. Not when guys like Peterson, Sherman, and Haden are cashing in on $50M+ in real money, and not when he knows his free agency won't commence again until he is 31 (the regular season in 2016.)

I'm just saying, what a game of chicken that would be, if the Patriots did not work out a contract extension but also did not cut him, taking their chances that they could extend him sometime during the next offseason, lessening their cap hit.

Maybe I'm wrong and Revis would love another giant one-year contract.

Thoughts?

The Patriots have no leverage with Revis. They have to lower his $25 million cap number in order to resign their own free agents and to sign other players. If they pick up his option, Revis will count at least $17.97 million against the 2015 cap (5 million prorated signing bonus, $12 million roster bonus, and the minimum salary for a player of his experience of $970,000. I'm pretty sure that once the option is picked up that the Patriots can not then convert the 12 million roster bonus into a signing bonus.

I think Revis has a good amount of leverage. If the Pats cut him he is a FA and the best deal wins. If they don't cut him he gets an obscene amount of money here. If he has a great year he has leverage. If he gets hurt or has a bad year he doesn't.

I think Revis is a pretty shrewd businessman. He has proven that he will sit out and also force a team's hand that will enable him to make a substantial pay day.

They have no choice but to resign him to what he wants, really. Hopefully he'll give us a little bit of a break.

Sure they do. They could cut him and move on. It would be painful, but if Revis demands $17mm a year or something outlandish like that, he won't be back next year.

I think we're looking at 12-14M a year for Revis. I really hope he re-signs. He gives us the ability to play man coverage with no help on any WR in the league. You saw against the Broncos how important it was to have him. This allows Browner to play press coverage with over the top help. It really impacts the game and shutdown cb's are almost impossible to find

Ok I'll play, lets say Pats win it all this year, does Revis work out his contract for better of a repeat and and stability here? He is known as "MEvis" in Jets land for holding out for more money a couple of times and it was his downfall for bein re-signed there. It makes sense with Pats & Revis to keep it together.

I don't blame him for asking for his market value. He was the MVP of the Jets and the pillar to Rex's defense. In the NFL an owner can cut you in a heartbeat, he has the ability to ask for more money.

Saying that if he wants to win and play in an innovative defense with the greatest defensive mind in the game than a slight pay cut might be worth it.

We are looking for what here, 5 years 50 million?

Maybe a taste for post season success (which would probably have to be SB bound as he went to the AFCCG with the Jets) would help with a home team discount?

The Patriots have no leverage with Revis.

The Patriots have plenty of leverage with Revis. Or will have. They are going to get him addicted to winning. Something he never got to experience on the Jets or the Bucs. :)

People forget that he went to 2 AFCCG w/NYJ. If he hits FA and a winning team that is knocking on the door and offering big money he'd be an idiot not to seriously consider it.

Yup an injury can turn a player around and rob him of skills or career.

He will get 12/13 a year i think....and hopefully it's from us
This is the 2004 Ty Law situation all over again. Only difference he is that Ty had a busted foot and his leverage was a bit compromised.

I was assuming that they'd want to be a real contender for the next few years. Which they won't be without Revis.

Revis holds all the cards he is not going to get more then 20 million guaranteed on the open market at 30 years old and the pats may not want to re-sign him they could take his 12 million and cut wilfork and they would have lots of cash to re-sign McCourty, jones. Ayers and add a young pass rusher because they already have browner Dennard Arrington butler Ryan under contract so IMO its not a most to give a 30 year old revis even just the 12 million he is making now as long as they put that money to good use

Even without Revis this secondary is better than the ones that brought NE to three straight AFCCGs, with one victory and near SB win. I'm going to go ahead and disagree with you on this one.
