Revis Overall Performance and Rating

Talib was great in a handful of games last year, pretty good in most of the rest, got DESTROYED by Steve Smith, and was out at crunch time.

Why are people talking like we had Deion back there?

I would say that is the main reason I prefer Revis over Talib. Revis has always been a chameleon who can be stuck on anyone with success, whether it is a big, physical receiver like Brandon Marshall or Calvin Johnson or a shifty guy like Welker. Talib is just as good at Revis against the bigger, traditional outside wide receivers and even tight ends like Jimmy Graham, but at you pointed out, he got burned by Steve Smith and Josh Gordon, who, while big, is also very quick and was lined up on the inside a lot.

He's not on the broncos, he couldn't be any good.

You do realize Darius Butler has been pretty damn awesome the last two years, right? We misused him when he was here, he's a good man corner and a terrible zone one.
Respect. Awesome is a bit of a hyperbole. I've watched quite a few IND games and he's been average to very good. He only plays in nickel and he does give up quite a few plays that look familiar to some he gave up in NE, albeit from the slot position.

From my casual observation, Sherman hasn't been good this season. In fact, I don't believe he's a shutdown DB at all. Great player on his side of the field but once you get him away from his side of the field, he's easily exposed. It certainly gives rise to the theory that Sherman is the beneficiary of the play of Chancellor and Thomas.

This is true, but you ahve to be really good too . Another example of this could be Asomugha on the Raiders, on a losing team ,with oposing team runnning the ball versus an abysmal defense is not so hard to get good ''shutdown stats'' . Same for Revis on the Jets. With that DL and defensive scheme that the jets got some years probably Hank Poteat /any CB would be a nearly probowler.

We won a superbowl with Troy Brown and ... and.... Well, 2 other guys from the street in the CB spot. Good pressure and rush are better than a good DB corps any day

Yeah, he's solid, which apparently looks like "awesome" to those of us who watched him his sophomore season. :)

When he's used correctly, he's been Revis. When he's playing off in either man or zone, particularly on 2 and 3rd and 5 or less, he looks decent. It all depends on how the coaching staff is using him.

I don't care at all about regular season... Pats will win the division. I care about postseason, and at least he'll be there, unlike Talib.

Talib is on the broncos now. Which means he probably will be there.

Quite impressive if you ask me. Very well worth every penny he gets paid.

By our highly unscientific count, in 8 games this year Revis has yielded 19 catches on 38 targets for 271 yds, with 1 TD & 2 INTs. #Patriots

By the way, that yields a ~ 60 qb rating

Some comments on the comments:

1. Talib WAS otherworldly for about a 5 game stretch last season and aside from health concerns is among the top 6 CB's in the league. But that being said he has had some games where he has been exposed. Off the top of my head, the Browns game and Josh Gordon come to mind.

2. Its easy to point out that Talib has never played a full season without getting hurt. However we could have said the same thing about Edelman....until he pulled his iron man act last season.

3. I'm surprised no one has compared Talib and Revis' PFF or FO's stats. I understand they are flawed by definition, but it would at least give us an indication of where the two guys stand.

4. I'm getting a bit annoyed at those who think that Revis should only play press man and using him in any other capacity is a waste. Its way oversimplifying. Here's an example from the Bears game.

I think it was about the 3rd series the Bears had the ball. It was 3rd and about 4. Cutler throw a nice flair to Forte. Now if the Pats where in a man coverage that everyone wants to run EVERY play, the play would have gotten the first down and more with the CB being driven off by the WR. Instead the Pats were in a zone. Brandon Browner (another guy some feel should ONLY play man) was not driven off by the WR, reacted well, made the tackle and the Bears had to punt. Its was a perfect example of what can happen when a QB is fooled into thinking he is running a play against man coverage, when its actually a zone

I know its sexy to want to blitz every play or play man every play, but the fact is that its not very effective to play that way. Just like you want your offense to be multiple and balanced, its th
e same on defense. Playing a predictable defense is the first and last step to failure.

5. DI made a rare lucid and insightful observation worth repeating. No CB under the current rules can be a true shut down CB the way the rules are interpreted And its unfair to compare what they have done in past season to what they CAN do this one, and be critical. Deon Sanders couldn't have thrived under these rulesl, And don't forget Sanders played in an era where 6\ 220 lb were a rarity, rather than the norm. And teams didn't routinely throw the ball 40+ times a game.

6. I think the Broncos will want to use Talib to try and shut down LaFell, and I don't doubt he'll do a good job of it. This will be an Edelman, Wright and Gronk kind of game. More of move the stakes kind of game and keep Manning and all his weapons on the bench. A return to the dink and dunk,

But this and a discussion of how the Pats will deploy their secondary should be for another thread.

Seriously... You're that much of a tool that you had to go there?

And can you believe people still ***** about his play?

Yes, and I recall a recent interview with BB where he pointed out that asking a corner to play press man coverage on every play was a recipe for exhaustion, and that's reason enough in itself for why they play Revis in zone sometimes. I was hoping that would shut up all the whining about how the coaching staff is "using him wrong."

The stupidity and arrogance inherent in anyone here thinking that they have an insight into how the Pats should play Revis that is superior to the views of the coaches is stunning enough to belong on a Jets' fans board.

smith had a 42 yard catch and then had 3 more rec for 20 yards so bottom line 4 rec for 62 yards is far from getting Destoyed by a WR who is in the top 5 right now. just because he is not with the team anymore does not mean we need to discredit a player who up until that point gave the pats the best CB they have had in over 5 years and played a year and a half for a total of just over 6 million. revis after Sundays game will have already made 6 million,

Steve Smith stat line last year vs Talib goes in line with Revis worst stat line this year.

I'd say Revis worst game was probably week 1 vs the Dolphins. And didn't Wallace only get something like 4 or 5 catches for 60+ yards and a TD?

If that's his worst game of the season, you'd be a fool to ***** about him. Actually the fact that people don't notice the improvements in our Defense compared to last year is quite pathetic. Remember we let QB's like Jason Campbell throw all over us.

The numbers are most likely from ProFootball Focus but give or take a few in completions and yards given up hes been fine. Maybe there are times in which he is a bit slower to ball because he is still learning the nuances of the defense but still..

Thats the problem with being the best and such an expectation following you.

I bet you that for every one of those 19 receptions there was some yahoo saying, "Revis sucks.."

People forget Our pass defense was all time bad from 09-13. Scrub QBs used to throw all over this team. The 11 Pats might be the worst secondary to ever start a Super Bowl, it's a freaking miracle we almost won a ring with that year

Sometimes I wonder if people are watching the same sport I am. Talib in 2013 was not, is not, and never will be Revis, at any age. It's like comparing Tony Romo to Tom Brady. Yes, you can take a small sample size and wave your hands, but at the end of the day its really not comparable.

Talib this year has been burned multiple times, and when I mean burned, I mean he's not even close. The big plays that Revis has given up this year are either flukes (like the ball bouncing off a guys knee), or situations where an athletic wr makes a play on a perfect throw. Not even Deion Sanders could stop that.

This in a league where Revis's most dominant traits are effectively muted b/c of rule changes (he was a master at jamming recievers at the line), and despite that he still is basically right there on every play.

Even Richard Sherman this year is giving up big plays (and i'd argue that similar to Revis, he's been right there making it really hard each and every time).

People thinking that they have an insight into how the Patriots should play Revis is both common sense and accurate. It doesn't take an NFL head coach to figure it out. It's clear, from watching Revis play with three different teams, that Revis is best when he's playing a lot of press man, and at his weakest (and least engaged) when playing off in zone. Sure, you can mix coverages over the course of time, but that doesn't change the underlying truth.

The correct scheme is the one that is best for the team, not for Darrelle Revis.
