But, last year we got handled in the AFCCG pretty easily and then Denver got killed in the SB. That tells me we have areas of need. Backup QB in my opinion, was way down the list.

Obviously BB and I have a difference of opinion on this. But if that disqualifies me from posting then this board is going to become really quiet and boring! The answer is right there but you are missing it. Maybe the coaching staff thinks its more important than you do for a reason.
I think the problem comes when you develop the potential successor at the expense of current team.
The chances that JG will lead the team to a SB victory are very slim, TFB has done it multiple times. If that pick was used to beef up the O-line Brady would be less likely to be injured and have a longer career, we'd also have a better chance of winning the SB.
Teams go through hell to get a franchise QB because they're so rare, when you have one it makes sense to protect the hell out of him and give him lots of weapons to throw to.
You're right, we won't have the ability to get an Andrew Luck-type prospect with Brady as QB, that's why you wait till he's done, let the chips fall where they may, and if that means a few seasons as the worst team in the league so be it, take your medicine and come back stronger.
The end goal of this current strategy is sustained mediocrity.
I take from this that the Pats have decided that Mallett is not "the guy," but with Belichick, you "never know." Maybe he's just trying to light a fire under him, though that seems an unlikely use of a second rounder.

In my first post I said I am a "in BB I trust" guy. But I would have preferred to use the 2 rounder on someone who may actually going to play on the field during a game while TB is doing so as well.
Don't think their needs are as great as you seem to think. Interesting pick. They obviously wanted Garoppolo to take him where they did. Seems like a terrific athlete with major upside between the ears. They can put him on ice for this season (like they did with Brady his first year) and let Mallett be the primary backup as JG soaks up the NFL experience. The big mistake we make is thinking Tom Brady will age gracefully and without injury. Seems to me this is a good time to draft the guy you want to develop for 3 years down the road. This is a QB driven league. I see this pick as a down payment on the not too distant future.BB the GM hates BB the HC.
Of all the needs and he does this.
I think we could slow them down in a defensive contest. But the offense, as it is currently constructed, would have a massive uphill challenge putting points on the board. If Gronk was available, maybe. But you can never count on that anymore. Too bad the TE pool, outside of Colt Lyerla (who should be in a straight jacket), is wiped out.Can you tell me with a straight face that we stand a good chance of beating the Seahawks if we played them today?
The one thing every report agrees on with Garappolo is that he has the right mindset -- intelligent, hard-worker, good leader and unflappable. That last bit, the level head on and off the field, is huge for QBs.
Could you be a bit more dramatic??sorry Brady, you get no more help.

'Nofolk Virginia ! Nofolk Virginia!'
"Nexta time, I'ma just gonna taka da bus...."
No. What is stupid is you not thinking beyond the end of your nose. Mallett is gone after this season since his contract is up. In the mean time, you give Garropolo a year to watch and learn behind Mallet and Brady and then take over next season. That way the Pats have a back-up behind Mallet in the off-chance that Brady gets hurt.
Have you paid attention to free agency at all? The Patriots added Brandon Lafell to the offense. That is just one piece. But they also have Dobson, Thompkins, Boyce, Edelman and Amendola there. Not to mention Gronkowski. They are likely to add another TE, but no TE would have had an immediate impact, regardless of who they chose.
BTW, there are still 6 more picks for the Pats. But, you can always go root for the Jets if you really feel that strongly about the Pats and their 5 time SB winning Coach..
