FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | SackSEER 2014

Who is their number one potential pass rusher? Well it's not Clowney.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock caused a minor controversy by stating that he would select Khalil Mack over Jadeveon Clowney, the most hyped defensive end prospect in the past decade. Well, Mayock has SackSEER in his corner, as Mack bests not only Clowney, but every 4-3 defensive end and 3-4 outside linebacker ever in the SackSEER projection system. Without the benefit of hindsight, SackSEER projection would slightly prefer Mack over Julius Peppers and Jevon Kearse (who have now been bumped down to the second- and third-highest projections on SackSEER’s all-time best list).

In terms of potential pass rushers for the Patriots, the system likes Kony Ealy, Trent Murphy, Jackson Jeffcoat and somewhat surprisingly (pleasantly), Kyle Van Noy. It also likes Kareem Martin as a projection.

If we want a pass rusher out of this draft, this system only serves to back up the conclusion I've already come to. We'll need to find that pass rusher within the first two rounds because there's no great depth this year.

Kyle Van Noy

Is there any particular reason why Van Noy's stock has dropped on this message board? His measurables are comparable to Christian Jones.

While he doesn't have the best foot speed, he more than make it up with his football instincts of diagnosing plays.

If he drops in the draft, I wouldn't mind drafting him (I still prefer Jordan Tripp).

I have always been a huge fan of Van Noy. However, speaking for myself, in terms of NFL projection, it's because I see Van Noy as not being elite in any one area. He's good in all areas but not really great in any. That's why I don't have him as a first rounder.

I love Van Noy and agree that he's just not elite in one area but he could be a really solid starter who can be flexible enough to fill a lot of roles. I get Murphy and think his upside is Vrabel which if fulfilled is pretty good. Jeffcoat flashes but he gets himself out of position a lot and lacks good hand technique and only has one move. I agree Martin is a project with potential. But for the life of my I just don't get Ealy. I watched another game of his the other day and for the first time I saw why a team might draft Michael Sam but as usual Ealy just disappointed. I feel like it's the emperor's new clothes and I'm the only one that sees he's naked.

First person that comes to mind hem reading this description is Mike Vrable.
