43 yard XP? Competition committee is discussing it.

It doesn't make sense to allow the team that is losing to get a free time out if they are unable to advance the ball. I can understand the rationale behind forcing a team with the lead to try to advance the ball, but if a team is losing by 4 with 50 seconds to go and they have the ball and get sacked, it should not stop the clock.

That's exactly what I want to see happen. Make the game go down to the wire!

I mean if the competition committee is looking to spice up some "boring" parts of the game that is the area to look at. Not the extra point, although I still like the idea of them having to drop kick it to get the extra point. Then Brady can be on the field and you wouldn't know what they're going to do!:)

The idea that the XP has to go, or be radically overhauled because it's a boring play, is an extremely silly one

For me it's not an issue of "boring." It's that the PAT is like a vestigial organ. As currently formulated, it functions more as a marker of the game's rugby origins than as a positive, logical, strategic part of the game.

I think the introduction of the 2-point conversion has been a huge improvement in NFL football, and I'd like to see a more thorough overhaul of the whole conversion concept to make it even better.

You're trying to fix a non-existent problem.

The EP has as much purpose as tits on a bull.
The only functional purpose of the EP is to give drunks an extended bathroom break.
And if their actually is a 1% chance of a miss, give the coach the option to forfeit one extra point once every two years.
Feel the excitement

We've discussed possible alternatives in the past, and I have no particular issue with looking more at that, as long as it doesn'd lead to fundamentally changing the game. The idea of a 43 yard extra point, though, is not the way to go. It's a really stupid idea. It fundamentally changes the game.

Feel the excitement

I feel the excitement of the team scoring touchdowns. Been feeling the SAME excitement since 1960....and after the touchdown, they kick an extra point. Not once ever did this bother ANYBODY...until now...sixty years later...and lunatics like you are screaming how BORED you are , how tortured your soul is because a play that has been part of the game since before your GRANDFATHER ever suspected YOU would come into existence, is carried out in NFL games. This is as anal retentive a cry of tragic boredom as I've ever witnessed.

"It's OUTRAGEOUS!!! These extra points a RUINING MY ENJOYMENT OF THE GAME!!!! They MUST GO!!!! It's a TRAVESTY!!!"

I don't like it that far back. If they do that then the smart thing to do is simply go for 2 points every time (the exception being the case where 1 point can win you the game late in the 4th).

So really what you are effectively doing is replacing a 1 point play with a 2 point play. If that is your goal then fine (I don't think that improves the game though). However if you want to make it more of a 50/50 proposition to go for it or not then you should put it 37 yards back. This will be enough to keep the 1 point try in the game as that is about 90% which is high enough to keep teams doing it but long enough that certain whether situations will come into play.

what an unbelievable firestorm...it's THE EXTRA POINT'S FAULT!!!

It's killing the game!!! Studies show a sharp increase in boredom deaths!!!

but as far as the little insignificant issues go, like the imposition of 15 yard penalties for "n" word profanity in a league that is 90% African American...well...who cares?....EXTRA POINT GATE!!!! THAT is the issue!!!! What is pass interference these days? Who cares? Who knows??..don't worry, negligible impact on games...it's that EXTRA POINT driving the entire world to mass suicide that's the REAL problem.

I think they should award points on difficulty and allow the scoring team to place the ball. 1 pt from the 2 yd line and 1 pt extra for each ten yards back. This would complicate math at the end of the game and enhance the value of the kicker position.

Don't know why they changed it so drastically (yardage). It's totally unknown how this will affect the game now.

Well they are discussing it, nothing has been changed, yet. I think 43 yards is a bit extreme. Have the extra point be taken at the 20. There is better symmetry there with touchbacks making you start at your 20, etc. Also I think a 37 yard FG is more like a 90% chance of a make.

It's not as good as 99% obviously but at least there is a 1/10 chance of failure. This will also create some strategy as far as FG blocking etc. Or what if you miss your extra point, next time do you go for 2 to catch up? Etc.

According to some this is a fundamental part of the game right up there with the forward pass. I think the only people causing a "firestorm" are those thinking they should keep it.

Personally....I say scrap the extra point kick and make teams EARN the SINGLE point by punching it in the end zone.
Teams need to earn the point, not be given an automatic reward

The part of this idea that would concern me is that the rate on 2-pt conversions is already under 50% I think. So now that becomes the 1-pt chance and you have to have something even less likely to get 2-pts. That feels too harsh to me.

In essence, isn't having it be a 43-yard kick doing more to earn the extra point? I see what you're saying, though.

The last time I recall a PAT being exciting was the Garo Yepremian Super Bowl fiasco.

Most of you weren't born then.

It fundamentally changes the game.

Deus: How would it "fundamentally change" the game, and how would that change be bad? [If we eschewed fundamental changes on general principle, there would still be no forward pass in football.]

And don't resort to answers along the lines of "Isn't it obvious?" After all, one of the greatest living football historians—namely, Bill Belichick—thinks the current system should be changed.

BTW, some food for thought:

Over the last four seasons, the two worst FG kickers with 10+ attempts:

44. Randy Bullock, HOU, 74.3%
45. Justin Medlock, CAR, 70.0%

Over the first four seasons after the AFL/NFL merger, the two best FG kickers with 10+ attempts:

1. Garo Yepremian, MIA, 69.2%
2. Nick Mike-Mayer, ATL, 68.4%

Interesting numbers, though I'd be more interested to see the breakdowns on extra points alone. Wonder if the numbers would be anywhere near as drastic.

Can't speak for Deus but, what is so wrong with the game now that requires us to change it? Don't fix what's not broken. Extra points aren't automatic. This is one of the few spots where I completely disagree with BB. Why don't we focus on things such as reviewable pass interference, not trying to get teams to leave their homes for London and screwing with extra points. League has its priorities messed up.

Here's what our spiritual leader and patron saint, BB, had to say on the subject.....

"Philosophically, plays that are non-plays shouldn’t be in the game. I don't think it is good for the game. Extra points, when the odds are in the 99 percent range in extra points it is not a play.”

Here's the link including 22 years of EP stats....and it unequivocally proves that YES....the EP is automatic despite what you chose to believe
