Re: Salary Cap upped to 130M..per ESPN

He's got a better chance of trading Ryan Mallett for the #4 pick in the draft.

Huh?

Why couldn't Talib's 2014 cap hit be for approximately 1/3 of the approximate 12m franchise tag on a longer term deal? That would come out to be about 4m. I'm not understanding why that's not very possible?

As I said, the AAV would be about 1/2 of the 12m (approx) franchise tag, which would mean that Talib would be receiving (approx) 6m per year AAV. It's possible that incentives could take that another million higher per year.

I'm not getting the surprise from you whatsoever? You really think that is unreasonable?

Re: Salary Cap upped to 130M..per ESPN

I respectfully disagree with you 100%.

There's no way in HELL that the New England Patriots (or anyone else for that matter) would consider paying Aqib Talib 11.5+ million dollars in a guaranteed salary cap hit for 2014.

I'm guessing that the Patriots are looking to have his 2014 cap hit at something about 33% (1/3) of that 11.5+ million dollars.

Talib misses an average of 21-22% of every one of his 6 seasons, has yet to complete a season at the end of the year with his team, and has a chronic hip concern that has plagued him for 3-4 yrs now. He's worth about 50% of that 11.5+ million per season on average, and that's at best. I suppose a reasonable argument can be made for 6-7 million per year if/when you'd include any incentives, although there are even some who would consider 7-8 million AAV (as you can tell, I am not one of them).

Actually, I will be rather surprised if more than maybe ONE cornerback is hit with the franchise tag for 2014. We'll know the answers to both of these questions soon enough.

I don't think we are talking about the same thing. I was responding to a post that said the extra money meant the same to every team. My point was it doesn't.

I am in no way advocating that Talib is worth that cost, just that the extra room could be applied to keeping him via the tag and not for competing against other teams in FA if the patriots chose to go that route.

Re: Salary Cap upped to 130M..per ESPN

I don't think they will franchise Talib, but I think it is in the realm of possibility. He has franchised CB's in the past.

There is a better chance they trade Mallett for the #33 than there is that they franchise tag Talib, which there is no chance of.

I don't see any possible contract offer acceptable to Talib with the above terms, but I admit there may be some way to do it that I am just not seeing. What precisely are you suggesting in terms of contract? (Please don't be one of the people in here who just mention contract length and total value without realizing that those 2 numbers are worthless without a breakdown of signing bonus and annual distribution)

I don't pretend to be a capologist, so maybe we can skip the lesson in capology and just stick to the basics such as AAV, guaranteed money, possible incentives, total worth of pact, and 2014 cap hit? I think most of us can follow along with that. Attempting to break down a year by year effort is pointless anyway, since we have no idea how Bill Belichick feels about his potential to remain here through the end of the term.

I totally respect the fact that you feel that Talib may be worth more, but my question to you is that if you perceive it to be in the range of 6-7m AAV, then why wouldn't a year one cap hit of something in the range of 4m work? Will there not be guaranteed money/signing bonuses etc? Will the pact not be structured in the likes of a tiered system after the year one/two hits? I think there are plenty of examples over the years of this.

Re: Salary Cap upped to 130M..per ESPN

Soon to be obsolete plans for filling out the NE roster should probably start with an accurate breakdown of the team's current investments. With that in mind, I thought I'd start the ball rolling in that area. If I've made any mistakes here, or missed anyone, I'd appreciate if someone would let me know. Starting on the offensive side of the ball:

Brady - 14.8m
Mallett - 937,945
QB total: 15,737,945

Ridley - 939,750
Vereen - 1,101,275
Bolden - 574,582
Gray - 420,000
McGuffie - 420,000
RB total: 3,455,607

Gronk - 5,400,000
Williams - 645,000
Develin - 575,000
TE/FB total: 6,620,000

Solder - 2,717,429
Mankins - 10,500,000
Cannon - 743,968
Vollmer - 3,750,000
Cave - 420,000
Devey - 420,000
Mattes - 420,000
Kline - 495,000
Barker - 495,000
Schwab - 495,000
Zusevics - 499,334
OL total: 20,955,731

Amendola - 4,575,000
Dobson - 779,175
Boyce - 614,250
Thompkins - 495,833
Moe - 422,666
Harrison - 496,000
Dunn - 420,000
Orton - 420,000
Slater - 2,226,668
WR total: 10,449,592

Offense totals: 57,218,875

I'll look at the defense after I get a few hours sleep.

"The NFL's projection on the salary cap for the 2014 season is now at $132 million.

Earlier in the week, it was reported that it would increase from $123 million to $130 million, which already was a figure higher than teams were expecting."

Is this the TV deals kicking in earlier than expected or what? Anyone know the reasoning for the cap being nearly 10% higher than projected?

Goodell deferred $360 mill of his $400 mill salary!

Ours is not to question why....

Ours is but to do or die !

Good News for NFL Teams......

Pats may be able to sign a player that they may have thought was beyond their means before this announcement ! :rocker:

This is NOT good news for the patriots. ALL teams now have $9M more than last year, when most were not projecting a large increase. It will significantly more difficult for the patriots to re-sign their UFA's.

I don't see that at all.

Teams closer to the cap benefit more than teams who were way over.

Extra money also benefits teams that are considered a place you want to play - that would include New England.

Others teams got EXTRA money because of the increase, we have ENOUGH money now to touch on ONE of our own guys without major restructures. We don't need to be AS creative as had to be prior.

The advantage definitely goes to teams who already had room as they now simply have even more.

The Patriots can now re-sign Talib, Edelman and Blount, easily, as long as they don't go crazy with their contract demands. That's nothing even approaching a bad thing.

The place where this is more likely to hurt NE is in adding FAs, not retaining them, and that can be fixed easily enough with just a couple of contract restructures.

Fewer players may get cut now = smaller FA pool = higher FA prices........but won't affect NE because BB only seeks vets that won't make opening day roster :)

Its the only logical way Dallas can get under the cap. THey were expecting to be 25 over. Now only 18.
