Breaking News we got Stallworth..

I have to admit this was kind of a letdown. After the frenzy on, what, Tuesday or Wednesday, they go and get this announced while I'm asleep. Bastards.

Exciting news, though. Getting a fast WR on that field turf will make a big difference and also should really open things up for Maroney too.

You are telling me. I was reading this damn board all last night waiting for something to happen and nothing....

the closest thing we got was some lunatic from Germany pretended he was a Patsfan and created a fake link on wikipedia about Randy Moss being traded to the Pats... that was it.

After that.... boring...

Career :

Stallworth : 195-2791
Branch : 213 - 2744

Drafted the same year.
according to nfl stats

stallworth : 44 games started - 233/3516/28 tds/60 of +20/11 of +40/160 1st downs

branch : 55 games started - 266/3469/18 tds/42 of +20/5 of +40/180 1st downs

Nice to have stallworth on the team. Not sure about the contract, but as many have said, i suspect the details will be a different than what's being thrown around.

I

Now...can we trade Stallworth to Oakland for Moss!!

;) :D

What's impressive about those stats are that Stallworth played opposite a very good Joe Horn and was not considered the "go-to-guy." He also had the All-Pro Hall of Famer Aaron Brooks as his QB.

haha , so you're saying a cut rodney, and a colvin and a poole is equal to a stallworth adalius ? i dont see it....

oh and i'm sure you know more about the pats than me, i'd hope so.

as for sportstalk...only ******s call in to sportstalk shows, you should know that.

so ya live in LA eh? , well i used to live in san diego, but now i'm up in montreal.

so a pats fan living in LA , how'd that happen? you a bandwagon fan?

Rodney, Poole and Colvin during their time as Patriots were hugely impactful players.

As for my bona fides, Pats fan-wise, I, um...GREW UP IN NEW ENGLAND and moved, you freakin' glorified Allouettes fan.

"For the Patriots to retain Stallworth for the 2008 season, they must pay him an option bonus of $6 million by Feb. 25, 2008. There is a subsequent roster bonus of $2 million due on March 1, a second roster bonus of $1.6 million based on playing time, a base salary of $1 million and a $400,000 workout bonus. That totals an exorbitant $11 million for 2008, or a two-year total of $14.6 million."

Per Michael Smith of ESPN

As several posters mentioned, very similar to the Javon Walker contract.
It's essentially a 1 year deal with a costly option for the second year.
Chances are if we win a lot of games, Stallworth will have played very well and can either get paid by the Pats, or more than likely get paid somewhere else.
Or if he has a down year, the Pats can re-structure.
OR my personal favorite option. Stallworth wins and decides he wants Brady heaving him the rock for the rest of his career.

Were your feelings similar when the Pats signed Sammy Morris?

When did we sign Sammy Morris to a big money deal? We signed him for chump-change. What I've heard of this deal - and I hope I'm wrong - is a decidedly bigger investment/risk. They are not relative, IMO.

So it looks like this is really a 1 yr deal for $3.6M (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2794615).

The article spins this like it was the agent's idea and the best thing for Stallworth. I don't buy it....IMO this really benefits the Pats more.

We basically get a 1 yr. rental of Stallworth with an option to buy. If he turns into Brady's #1 receiver, gets 1000+ yds, etc. my guess is that the rest of the deal will look very reasonable in the marketplace.

People saying Stallworth = Branch PLUS a #1 pick need to add the fact that we spent a full season without a #1 receiver as part of the equation.

Agree. I'd rather have another Lombardi and an overpaid WR than a second #1 draft pick and no Lombardi. It does tell you that he would have been paid here had he just had some patience or compromised with us.

I do like the Stallworth pickup though. I've always been amazed at his ability. Needs more consistency though.

BTW, to whomever took issue with my labeling Stallworth a "disappointment" - I know he did have a very good year two years ago. I don't mean to say the guy stinks or anything, but I still maintain that regardless of his one really solid season, given what was expected of Donte Stallworth when he was drafted, he has been a disappointment.

I hate to pat myself on the back, but since no one else did....;) Somewhere back on page 7 or 8 of this thread, I mentioned that once the details of the contract come out, it wouldn't ACTUALLY be a 6 year $5MM/yr deal, but rather someting UNDER $4MM/yr early in the contract.

The reality: The Pats get Stallworth for a MAXIMUM cost of $3.4MM in 2007. Now if they choose to keep him for 2008 there were be a huge cost, but the bottom line is that we have him on the cheap for a year. This now becomes a real no brainer.

BTW- if Stalworth has a great year and the Pats decide to keep him, they can redo the contract to spread the cap consequence out more evenly. Good deal for Stallworth, GREAT deal for the Pats

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

leave the #s to the armchair GMs -- which we seem to have in abundance. mindblowing to find negative commentary in this thread. Dear New England, it's called Prozac.

This signing was a memo to the rest of the league: Hope you all enjoyed crowding the box against the Pats...sure was fun to harass the Patsies while it lasted.

Time to pick your poison.

Time to sweat.

Should you fail to respect the perimeter of the Pats attack, they will now be the ones having all the fun.

The earlier and more often the Pats score, the more chances Adalius gets to crush the QB. All you O-haters should poll our defense and ask them how much easier their jobs become when the O is productive.

Then ask our O-line how much easier their job becomes when they don't have to hold blocks in pass pro for eternity, or worry about an extra defender shooting a gap at the last second. And finally, ask our best player how much easier his job is against a spread-out defense that's forced to react to US.

Or how much nicer it is to play without the fear of a career-ending hit after every single pass.

Get ready for 3rd and 2 instead of 3rd and 5. Get ready for improved field position, more points per drive, better red zone efficiency...get ready for teams consistently chasing us...and for the defense unleashing on them.

Football 101: upgrading an offense releases the anchor off an otherwise solid defense (see: any great dynasty team in history). Upgrading a defense at the expense of the offense makes you the 2006 Bears.

Still think an upgrade at ILB or DB would pay more dividends than Stallworth?

Every team deals with the injury advisory.

Sit back and relax -- the Patriots are taking the NFL to school....again.

I'll pat you on the back Ken... as usual, you've said it well! Great Deal!!!!

Not spraying my shorts over this signing like some folks, but its a good move.

I really love the contract.

It will be a HUGE signing if he can play 14-15 games. But given Stallworth's history, I'm expecting him to miss 5-6 games.

Hopefully by the time he gets gimpy mid-season he can tag out with CJax, who will hopefully be healthy and ready to stretch the field.

So:

Stallworth
Welker
Caldwell
Gaffney
CJax
Troy?

I'd like to see Troy stick around another hear given CJax ??? at health and the not-exactly-an-iron-man Stallworth.

And Laurence Maroney just smiled. Stallworth, Welker, Caldwell/Gaffney, and Troy Brown? A lot of holes just opened up for him to run through. Really excited about next season, boys.

Way to go on a limb given that AD's 2007 cap hit is $3.4 million. :)
