Enough "pink" already!

That's why I'm suggesting this NFL "campaign" is more about marketing the league to women than it is about true cancer awareness. Especially after so many years of the same thing every October.

All of the pink items are auctioned off with the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Cancer is a terrible disease. Every one of us has been affected in one way or another. Breast cancer in particular is a very big deal in my family for reasons I needn't go into here. I appreciate what the NFL is doing here and my own opinion is that dismissing this as marketing to women is pretty cynical.

Sorry to be a scold but I think this thread is not this site's finest hour.

Your personal perspective is understandable, but because of that you're missing the point of the original post. And no, not all the pink items are auctioned off with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Most of them are sold for profit at NFL pro shops: Official New England Patriots ProShop - Your Search For "bca" Returned 28 Results "A portion of the proceeds" from those sales goes to breast cancer awareness. Precisely how much, and how it's applied, they're not saying.

Also, Zeus: don't presume to "scold" me about cancer being a terrible disease. I have more firsthand experience with it than you'd want to imagine. Not YOUR finest hour on this site, bucko.

.

Well, for one, colon cancer's not nearly as "sexy", and I don't mean that in a crude way.

Mixed feelings on this one. My mother-in-law is a breast cancer survivor, and I've seen firsthand the hell she's gone through. A quick google search, though, confirmed what you probably know Tunes - there are more new cases of prostrate cancer each year in the U.S. than any other type of cancer.

(LOL cue the funny Family Guy prostrate exam clip.)

Mixed here as well. My mom's best friend died of breast cancer in her late 30s. I was very little at the time, but I knew about death. My mom was never the same after that.

I'm all for saving the boobies, but the league should put more emphasis on how it actually helps the cause, not litter the field with pink.

Are they auctioning off the pink 1st down marker too?

you can get cancer by lying prone?
Prostate cancer is one of the most survivable so it's not a good comparison.

That said, we all know about breast cancer and other cancers, we don't need this crap.

How do those words get interchanged so often? Folks aren't paying attention!

It's plane to see...people must be on another plain...or not...wha?????

Time and place for everything. Sporting events aren't s good disease awareness venue. People watch sports to get away from reality.

Its the NFL who is cynical. This is a marketing campaign. "We care about your breasts! (So the least you could do would be to watch our sport!). After all if they care about diseases why not prostate which affects many more of their fans? Because those fans are already watching. This is about getting new customers. Why not heart disease which kills more women? Because women won't identify with the effort so won't be compelled to watch it. After all heart disease affects mostly men even though more women die of it then breast cancer.

And why is breast cancer so special? Tragic disease to be sure but there are dozens of tragic diseases. To be fair they should have a different disease every week. How about alzheimer's? Alcoholism? Prostate, colon cancer. Turn the NFL into a giant PSA announcement. And if you're against that then I guess you're just cynical and dont care that people are dying shame on you!

Excellent post, Kenny.

hey..if you're cynical..guess what?..that doesn't mean that you don't know you're going to die of something...or that loved ones have and will...it means you're sick of these giant conglomerative corporations pushing it down your throat using guilt as a weapon to shame you into giving YOUR money to them on the basis of a "trust me" promise.

I HAVE had a bout with cancer...I HAVE had two strokes...I HAVE a family history of colon cancer (killed my grandmother). I AM a compassionate person and I DO donate ...to MANY causes and research. I DO NOT need to be force fed a particular cause by a league that, quite frankly,is hardly the most trustworthy entity on the block.

Here's my pledge...I will CONTINUE to be as philanthropic as possible within the fiscal parameters of MY life...and let the NFL concentrate THEIR time and money on improving the GAME of football, starting with a back-up(s) replay system, instead of trying to P.T. Barnum you, me and the rest of the viewing public into giving THEM money.

Pink it's my new obsession Pink it's not even a question, Pink on the lips of your lover, 'cause Pink is the love you discover

Pink as the bing on your cherry Pink 'cause you are so very Pink it's the color of passion 'Cause today it just goes with the fashion

Pink it was love at first sight Pink when I turn out the light, and Pink gets me high as a kite And I think everything is going to be all right No matter what we do tonight

You could be my flamingo 'Coz pink is the new kinda lingo Pink like a deco umbrella It's kink - but you don't ever tell her

Pink it was love at first sight, and Pink when I turn out the light Pink gets me high as a kite And I think everything is going to be all right No matter what we do tonight

I want to be your lover I wanna wrap you in rubber As pink as the sheets that we lay on Pink it's my favorite crayon, yeah

Pink it was love at first sight Pink when I turn out the light Pink it's like red but not quite And I think everything is going to be all right No matter what we do tonight

First, in rereading what I wrote, I should not have directed my comments at you. My tone was disrespectul and for that I apologize.

This issue has been covered in the press over the years. First, the league is pretty clear that the pink items worn and used by players, cheerleaders and officials will be autographed and auctioned. (Yes, it's true that I have no idea whether that includes the pink first down markers.) Second, the league has also stated that it "does not profit" from the sale of the pink mechandise. Florio covered this last year. Of course, there are likely some accounting nuances in play here. And this does not address the issue of whether the manufacturers of said items realize a profit, although many of them claim to at least contribute a portion of the proceeds to cancer research.

There are those who feel strongly that the league has ulterior motives and is simply employing a concept called cause related marketing. Even the particular charity that is the beneficairy of this effort has been criticized for their approach to combating the disease. So it's a more complicated issue than meets the eye.

So would it be better if the NFL didn't do it?

The campaign has reportedly raised $4.5 million over the past several years. My sense is that this is worthwhile. I'm not bothered by the pink items but I recognize that this is a function of my own experiences in this area. At the same time, others feel differently for very good reasons and they are entitled to their opinion.

As long as they're not partnered with Susan G. Komen I don't really care. Can't stand SGK after what I've learned about them. From what I can tell it is the NFL partnering with the American Cancer Society so I can't figure out why this is a bad thing.

I don't think anyone here is saying it's an inherently "bad thing." But how much of a "good thing" it actually turns out to be, in context of the over-the-top image being projected, is open to question.
