Rumor: Pats seeking to trade RB Jeff Demps for draft pick

I hope we don't deal Spikes, no one better on our team against the run

Not meaning to change this into a Spikes thread, but obviously this year will be very key in terms of his consistency if he's going to be given big money at some point before he hits FA next March.

Even then, his situation still may not allow him to stay here depending upon his asking price.

Only way I want Spikes gone is if someone offers a better pick than the one we took him with... we took him with almost of last pick of the second round... Dealing him however just creates a large hole in a decent LB set, which means we have to use one of the picks on a replacement anyway. Seems kind of pointless unless we already know we won't pay him before he hits FA and atleast dealing him now gives us something in return for losing him...

Spikes is a tackling machine that brings attitude to the defense. No way would I want to see him traded. He is slow and isn't great in coverage....welcome to every other MLB in the league. That is why the Patriots got Adrian Wilson to play the big nickel position.

Anyhow, Demps might return the patriots a half eaten peanut butter and fluff sandwich, I cannot see much more than that.

Spikes is aweful in coverage, a huge liability.

He isn't that bad when he is playing in a box, he is excellent down near the goal line. He shouldn't be asked to cover, his role is run stopper/pass rusher.

Spikes is a good run-stopper. The team desperately needs a nickel linebacker, though, because Mayo is their best coverage linebacker and he's mediocre at best. Maybe Fletcher can step up this year.

You're really of the opinion that a starting MLB shouldn't be asked to cover?

If the other team doesnt accomidate us and passes then we're at a big disadvantage.

7 passes defended last year.

He of course should cover, but only in zone.

demps should net a conditional 7th or so.

He would still be a liability in zone. This team, IMO, missed Fletcher last year. Coverage LB should be something they look at in the later rounds.

I think Fletcher and Wilson can take on that role. Spikes plays the role of enforcer when in coverage, he hits the crap out of the receiver and forces fumbles.

I don't think Spikes is going to resign Trading Spikes or at least exploring his trade value might be worth the time. Maybe packaging him with Mallet to get more or lower pick to go get that coverage linebacker, extra DB or pass rusher in the draft

I would not trade my backup QB AND starting ILB for a 3rd round pick

Mediot insanity.
Were that anywhere close to true instead of misinformed blathering, then QB needy teams would be offering a 1st or their early 2nd round picks for The Hammer. Should this happen or equally likely a Russian meteor take out Jets stadium, I'll eat crow and be jacked and pumped about our enhanced draft.

I don't know what his value is and I am not saying its the 6th overall pick what I am saying is saying his and Demps situation is similar is flat out wrong. Demps was a UDFA with 5th-6th round draft potential. Mallett was seen as a sure 1st rounder who slipped due to character and work ethic concerns.

I will say I don't rule out that Lombardi would give up the a high pick only because his son was on our staff last year and could be telling his father Mallett is a sure thing. If not for that I'd fully agree with your stance of it basically being impossible.

I think Spikes will resign here. His value is much higher here than any place else. Most middle linebackers are generally 3 down linebackers having an outside linebacker like Mayo who slides inside in sub packages allows a player like Spikes to be our middle linebacker. He won't be able to pull that off elsewhere as easily.

That's not true Mayo is very good in coverage compared to most 3 down linebackers. The lack of a hybrid safety in many games forced Mayo into some difficult match ups. But when it comes to 3 down LB play its like Willis and then Mayo right now in the NFL.

BB and the defensive schemes hide his weaknesses, and allow Spikes to play to his strengths... other teams may not be able to do this.

Very true, Spikes is base defense linebacker. He will not get much more than the deal Ray Maualuga got 2 years/$6.5 mil and that is really being generous. McClain granted had off field issues but he just signed 1years/$700 thousand.

Yeah, I don't really get why people assume Spike's price tag is going to be prohibitively high.

Though, Maualuga blows, so I'm not sure he's a good example to use as a basis for comparison.
