Troy Brown - Greatest Patriot of All Time?

I can't think of any other Patriot (past or present) who is as versatile and unselfish. The best thing about him is he would never admit to being the best.

When you consider the positions he has played and played well, WR, DB, KR, PR and ST's (non-returner), he has to be the football player that the Patriots have ever had. I can't think of anyone else over 35 years who is better. Hell, he was even an emergency QB.

He would certainly would be a top 5 greatest Patriots.

YUP....from start to finish (one more year please) - you nailed it.

Best All Time Patriots FOOTBALL player ever.

Law? Well he was a hell of a CB, but how many years did he play for us? How many has Troy played for us?

Law plays for the money. Troy is always a Patriot, no matter what. Not as though he'd make big bucks anyways...

So, we're going by how many years as the reason someone is the best? Armstrong played about the same as Troy, made 6 pro bowls and is in the Pats' Hall of Fame.

Thats not it. My point is Law to me was not all that loyal to the Pats didnt have any problems walking out like many of our players who walked away. Brown has stuck with us into his mid 30's and still played very solid football, and not only that but he has played DB and WR. He had 3 straight seasons with A LOT of catches, particularly 2001 with 105 of them.

If you had to chose who you would want in the HOF between Brown and Law and only 1 could make it, who would you choose?

Law over Brown???

I love Troy Brown. He and Tedy Bruschi should and will have their numbers retired. He is the best WR in team history. He is everything the Patriots have come to represent.
But he's not going to the Hall of Fame, and he cant be put on the level as Tom Brady, John Hannah, or Andre Tippett at his peak.

Whats so ironic is that when the Patriots offense was so loaded in 1996, if anyone had told you that with Terry Glenn,Shawn Jefferson,Ben Coates,Curtis Martin, Keith Byars, and Dave Meggett on the team, that Troy Brown would emerge from that group to outshine them all in Patriots history, you'd have thought they were insane.

Absolutely true. Of course, you could say the same thing about Tedy Bruschi, who was a special teams rookie on that team. And of course, the one that we were all sure was going to be in the Hall of Fame isn't even on your list - Drew Bledsoe.

Tom Brady?

John Hannah?

Most exemplifies what it means to be a Patriot, maybe?

I love Troy, but when you're saying greatest you have to include the raw talent the Cosmic Muffin gave you.

We might be talking the greatest lineman and QB ever, by the time Tom hangs 'em up.

Here's a little fuel for some healthy off season debate. Who is the greatest Partriot PLAYER of all time?

I have been thinking about this lately. From his strip in the San Diego game and then seeing the America's game series on NFL Netowrk. He was a huge part of the SB run in 2001. His catch and huge gain in the final drive against the Rams, Playing D-Back, turning down more money to stay in NE. Tough catch after tough catch over middle. Punt Returner. Pro Bowler. So many big, heads up plays, especially in the biggest games, amazing work ethic, one of the few players Belichick goes out of his way to praise. All this from an undrafted free agent from D1AA Marsahall

I am biased a little because I have seen his whole career and cannot really comment on a Hannah, or Capiletti as fluently, but I still say that Troy has made a bigger impact on the Patriots Organization than any other player in the history of the franchise. If you don't think so, tell me who has and why.

good pick... not arguing at all... brown is a great pick... but id throw bruschi, hannah & brady in the mix
all four over law, stingley, grogan, or gino... bledsoe and vinitraitor can fight over 9 and 10 to me. then, armstrong, grogan, andre, seymour (he might be #2 by the time he's done), harrison & dillon had no chance, but made more difference than most guys listed. coates? graham (will never be appreiciated by anyone but BB)

Bingo we have Bingo!!

This is tough, really think that Brown is in the top tier, but difficult to id the greatest Pat as there are so many.. Brady, Hannah, Cappelletti, Bruschi, probably Seymour, don't forget about Julius Adams.. difficult call. The second tier includes Vinateri, Law, Grogan, Armstrong, Cunningham and can never exclude Stingley.. some gave all.

The best take I've heard on Troy Brown was after the SD game. Mike Francessa was saying that Parcells says that if he had to build the perfect 53 man roster from football history, not the best players at each position but the best mix of guys with reserves who would all accept their roles and do what it took to win, that Troy Brown would be on it.

Tom Brady will go down in history as the greatest "Patriot PLAYER"...but I would nominate Troy Brown as the greatest "Patriot" of all time. His unselfishness, sacrifice, commitment, and work ethic have been inspirational to his teammates and a proud reflection of the Patriot "Way".
I hope that after Troy retires, the organization creates the "Troy Brown Award"...that recognizes the Patriots' player that embodies those qualities that Troy demonstrated both on and off the field.

Amen.

Troy Brown is my man. Even got the #80 Jersey. I'll get Brady/Bruschi ones later. Don't mess with the Bs!

I love Troy- he's one of my fav patriot players of all time. But I think Morgan was their best WR ever.

I do feel that Troy is the most likable Patriot of all time, hands down.

It's hard to answer this question with a "yes", but even harder to answer it with a "no."

i have to admit this is my reply too...

anyway i consider his play @ SD one of the best ever plays i ever seen : thks Troy ! You saved us against San Diego surely with it

I think the play that epitomizes who Brown is and what he means to the team came with just under a minute to go in superbowl 38. He had just been called for a push off, and the team was facing a first and 20. He made one of the most spectacular super bowl catches that nobody every talks about on the very next play. Brady jammed it in there where only Brown could catch it, and the reality is that it was a near impossible catch, but he made the play to make it a manageable 2d and 7, setting up Branch's big catch on 3d and 4.

Right on.

First of all, that was a horseshyte call of offensive PI, even worse than the one called against Seattle in SB40. That catch he made, on the very next play, was un-effin-believable.

Don't forget the catch he made at the Meadowlands, in Dec.'96, against the Giants...on his back.

If he and Sam Gash had been able to play in SB31 against Green Bay, Desmond Howard does not return that 2nd-half kickoff, after the pats had just closed the gap, for a TD.

Troy is the greatest Patriot WR of all time, followed by Cappelletti.

I like the idea of the Troy Brown Award, and of the retirement of #80.

I say: one more year (at least) for Troy. We need him, now more than ever.

not even close. sentiment seems to be overriding a lot of logic on this thread.
