The problem with Fredo as an employee in a football organization, say as a DC, is that his boss & peers don't trust him not to backstab them.

I get that and realize Mangina made many mistakes in jetland, as Pioli did in KC, but these guys are also really bright and capable, and like Belichick it could well be that they learn from their mistakes and change their ways in their next gig. Same goes for McDaniels. It could be with some of these guys that they try to replicate Belichick instead of being themselves in their first chance's, although I don't think that was Pioli's problem which was more likely that he has to tone down who he really is. Dimitroff, on the other hand, was apparently completely comfortable with just being himself and went against the advice of his former mentors (e.g...Jones Draft day trade) and went his own way with great success. I'm really happy for Dimitroff, good guy, I hope they have a good play-off run so he doesn't get crapped all over.

I know people are going to hate this but I do believe Mangina when he says he never meant for having the camera removed to turn into what it turned into, and i do think it was Bradway who was behind blowing it up. I honestly think he really really regrets that, even if that is small consolation to Belichick, the Kraft's, and patriot fans.

Maybe, but Mangini obviously didn't give a rat's ass about the collateral damage.

Spygate was just the icing on the cake for Ratgini (he left and tried to steal things on the way out), and if he really regretted it, he should have said so, publically, at the time. He only said it way afterwards when it was in his interest to look like a nice guy to get a TV gig. Screw him. I will never read or watch anything he does as a protest.

I'll take Cleveland. Family could be more important to him or at least a major consideration. Look at Saban. He failed miserably in the NFL. He went back to college and is making a fortune. College will always be an option for Kelly.
Buffalo...the place sucks. I wouldn't blame him at all for avoiding it. OTOH he may be still considering it. Who knows?

I've lived all over the world. I've lived all over New England except for VT and NH. I live in Buffalo now. I would take Buffalo all day long over New Hampshire. The city has its warts but it's actually a very beautiful place, especially the parks system and the architecture. It has a good music scene, people are into the arts, lots of great restaurants all over town. And the weather here is great compared to the majority of the country.

Q: have you actually ever been inside the city of Buffalo? (I'm not talking about Orchard Park). And if yes, where?

I believe Mangina when he says he never realized it would go where it did. He had been with NE when they removed the jets camera the year before and nothing came of it. I think what kicked it into high gear was Bradway having NFL security confiscate it rather than stadium personel. Mangina was coaching he didn't make those calls and decisions. Don't get me wrong, he still f.cked them, I just don't think he knew it would go the way it did.

I understand why everyone feels the way they do and i hated him for it myself, i just think he's being sincere when he talks about it and makes it clear he really regrets it.

I used to tour with rock bands back in the 80s. We'd hit Rochester, (hated it), Buffalo, (nice pubs...end of story), Cleveland, (not a favorite, but decent). Of course the music scene is only a small representation. What I would to know is, what does living in Buffalo have to offer that would offset working for the Bills compared to the Browns. Yes, Cleveland the city is no picnic and both cities were referred to as "The Mistake On The Lake" at some point, (mostly Cleveland). All things considered from Kelly's perspective, I don't see any reason to go to Buffalo.

BTW, NH is pretty cool with no sales tax, no state income tax and local government, but like you said, every place has its warts.

I have no idea what Buffalo was like during the 1980s. I moved here 7 years ago after living in New Haven, CT, NYC, Boston, Providence, Ann Arbor, MI, then Padova, Italy and Barcelona. Buffalo is really pretty compared to most cities in the northeast. like almost all cities in the NE, it is segregated and has lots of poverty in the segregated areas (common to Boston, Providence, New Haven, etc.) But the central neighborhoods are wealthy, have a lot of culture, and there are beautiful turn of the century houses and architecture here. You're right that 1900 was the heyday, but what a heyday it was. First electrified city on earth, the Erie Canal terminus, lots of money built the great architecture and left behind a ton of money in cultural foundations. There are things about the city I don't like (many Buffalonians) but without a doubt it is a ton prettier than Cleveland (and I know Cleve well from living in Ann Arbor and visiting friends there). Buffalo is certainly much nicer. By the way, there are a lot of former Bills living up here year round. They're not from here, but they live here. The richest ones as well, such as Jim Kelly and Thurman.

Back then I was a roadie in my late 20s. With age I've developed a taste for culture and may well enjoy another romp in Buffalo. You might get a kick out of this link.

Looks like (now) former Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone will be the Bills new football head honcho.

More mediocrity, or just a bargain for the Bills ownership???

With all the retread coaches out there, why not take a shot on a guy who did ok at a major program w/ coodinator experience?

I wonder how many other divisions look "better" for a coach than our AFCE. Our decade+ of dominance has to be somewhat a detractor for a coach (unless it's a last or first shot)?

Not sure. I though Philbin was an excellent choice for MIA and hes done a nice job down there. NYJ....they need a STRONG GM to keep Rex in line.

For the Bills, the problem started at the top- Ralph Wilson, the East Coast Al Davis, only Wilson knew nothing about football and knows more about horseracing. but...with Wilson but with him stepping aside and letting Russ Brandon- who seems to want to be the next Billy Beane might be the electro-shock therapy that the Bills need so they can join the rest of the NFL in the new millenium. Once Nix fossilizes, the young Doug Whaley- who came from the Squealers will take over as GM.

More on the Marrone hire:

I don't know much about Marrone (Pherein might be able to fill us in), but it seems like a good move. He has pro experience as the Saint's OC, and a background as a college innovator, with regional ties to the area, and he's been successful at Syracuse which should give him some credibility with the local fans. Chip Kelly was a bigger name, but it would also have been a bigger jump for Kelly to adjust to the NFL than for someone who's already got experience as an NFL OC.

They did this to save on the relocation costs, figuring the guy can just load up a U-Haul and drive himself the 150 miles to Buffalo. Also, he's one of few coaches in the U.S. for whom moving to Buffalo is technically a move south (albeit by the smallest of margins), so they promised him warmer weather than he has now. How could he say no?

Ralph Wilson has apparently chosen to allow his Bills to remain irrelevant for the rest of his NFL days. Well, Bills fans will always have draft day.

With a normal career progression Marone would have had to get hired my a top flight college program, bring it to a couple of major bowls, and then be a NFL HC candidate. For the Bills, the money they save by waiting to see if he is capable is the key.
