Brady was unhappy with a fourth-quarter sequence in which the 49ers were granted a timeout as Brady attempted to run a hurry up offense. He had the ball in his hands after it was snapped and the play blown dead, and he reacted with disgust, spiking the ball into the ground.

Did the refs give the 49ers a break for the Patriots trying to use a strategic advantage?

One one hand, it's really lame to blame the officials.

On the other hand, when you have two powerhouse evenly matched teams (i.e. the Pats and the Niners), one call can decide the game.

Blaming the refs is a waste of time, although this crew was borderline abyssmal. Once upon a time guns was the best of the best, decisive and disciplined. In his dotage his whole crew has become overthinkers so afraid of making a mistake they make even more of them. They now call games as tortured and uneven as his rambling explanations. I had a bad feeling from the moment I heard his crew was officiating this game.

But Brady's point seems to be if you don't get the call before the snap you don't get the call... Refs don't get one mississippi post snap to reassess what is going on.

Worst call of the night was the Talib PI, the side judge was stood right next to the play and waved it incomplete then some dolt up near the LOS threw a flag and decided it was PI :bricks:

It happens a lot. In fact, I remember in the 2007 season Brady benefiting from a similar late timeout call by the refs in the Ravens' game (thanks Sexy Rexy).

The officiating was awful last night. I don't know if that is one place where the refs really screwed up though. There were a lot of bad calls/non-calls on both sides of the ball last night.

I think it depends on how imminent the snap is. Unfortunately this may be a subjective call by the referees but TB appears to be right.

I cant find the wording in the NFL rule book but found this on CBS Minnesota

It is now a dead-ball foul and a five-yard penalty if the offense lines up with too many men for more than three seconds or the defense has too many players and the snap is imminent.

In all honesty he didn't turn his head. What was worse to me is the PI that was NOT called on the 49ers early in the game when we were getting shut out.

If they're going to call them, be consistent. Both of them were PI.

Hochuli is a disgrace. I thought the 49ers were victims of bad calls and non-calls too. So I am not blaming him and his crew for the loss, but any of the replacement ref crews could have called a better game.

One non-call that really got to me last night. I still don't know how there wasn't a holding call on a critical third and goal where the defender molested Lloyd so much that I was waiting for him to call out the Gimp. The defender literally had his hands down inside his shoulder pads from the front. And the ref was standing right there.

I thought Ron Winter's crew was the worst they had seen all year until last night minus the replacements refs in the Ravens game. If there was a sabermetrics calculation for VORR (Value Over Replacement Refs) this crew might be a negative value. I'm not blaming them for the loss as they were awful for both teams. The one that pissed me off the most was SF came into the game with the most offensive holding calls against them and were holding their @sses off last night but yet not one flag.

The non call on Welker has to be right up there, too. And I found it interesting that given all the pre game chatter about how one SF DL appears to facilitate the other's sacks by holding the broadcast team noted that just that happened on one last night. Had a whole handful of shoulder pad which is kind of hard to miss.

This is why I said all along all the angst over the replacements was hooey. But the media saw a story line and ran with it, which is what they do.

I thought the timeout was close, but it seemed as if the 49ers called it in time. I had more issue with the inconsistency of the holding calls.
