Chiefs player Jovan Belcher dead in murder-suicide

This puts the Panthers in an awkward situation. If they end up getting a big lead, it will look like they are kicking a team when they're down.

The only thing worse than this case, was when wrestler Chris Benoit killed his wife, then killed his own young son with a wrestling hold, then hung himself over the course of a weekend. WWE still won't mention his name and goes out of their way to not acknowledge him.

So sad.

This could only be worse if he waited until gameday to do this, or tried a stunt on the sidelines or something.

The team can't even honor a lost teammate, as they'd be honoring a murderer. :(

Holy crap. Just heard about this a few minutes ago. Terrible. :(

still can't believe the guy i fit today, his son was his roommate in college and best friend. When you think of how big the world is...it really isn't

There is nothing rational about suicide.

You are, I think, old enough to have been in variety of elder-care situations.

So I find it VERY odd that you'd say that.

I wonder how the Chiefs organization will handle it tomorrow as far as tributes are concerned. I mean, do you give a moment of silence and one of those helmet decal remembrances for a murderer? But at the same time, if they don't mention it at all then it's totally the elephant in the room, ya know?

POor girlfriend, mother, baby, RAC and Pioli. Thoughts and prayers to all of them. They are going to need them.

That's a really good point, it's going to be interesting to see how the Chiefs and the NFL handle this tomorrow. They can't honor the player's death per se, but they have to acknowledge what happened somehow, especially given that NFL personnel had to witness it. It certainly qualifies as a TEAM tragedy. Very different from the Sean Taylor situation. Frankly I don't know what makes the most sense here. Just very, very sad.

The league is at the height of its popularity and marketability and this sort of thing is going to haunt an otherwise exciting year, and that's very unfortunate. It will and should be talked about for a long while and brings the head injury debate back into full focus.

Thankfully whatever rage Belcher felt he left his baby girl out of it.

What if his rage stems from the fact that it wasn't his dna? I'm not saying that it was or was not, but, what if it was not? That might trigger some rage...

That's rather harsh. Having seen many such tragedies, he has my greatest sympathy, as well as condemnation for his terrible act.

Not harsh at all. I never feel any sympathy for a murderer....guess you can.

Why do you feel sympathy for a murderer?

Did he have a soul before the murder? Did you even the know the man to come up with this opinion? Or is it a proclamation that he had no soul?

Just seems to me that once you kill another human being, you lose you right to have a soul.

What is there to know or understand other than the fact he took another's life and then selfishly and cowardly took his own?

Had he not taken his own life, how would you feel about the man who murdered the mother of their child?

Ok then...thanks for coming.

I feel sympathy for a suicide-murderer because I cannot imagine what it must be like to stand in front of your creator without a chance of repentance. Therefore, I am happy for the good when they're gone but I feel sadness and worry for the others.

Assuming that this article is correct:

Would anyone have sympathy for this guy if he had murdered his girlfriend/mother of his new born infant and drove to the police station to give himself up?

But since he kills himself in front of people who didn't need to see what he was about to do, now he deserves sympathy?

I see a coward who killed an innocent mother. I see a coward who left an infant parentless and other family members without a son/sibling. I see a coward who left emotional scars on people who viewed his suicide for no other reason than they wanted to help him. I see a coward who didn't want to face the repercussions of his actions.

All I see is a coward and his victims. My condolences to the victims.

This is the most accurate and truthful post about this incident in the entire thread.

For a while, I was actually starting to believe people have sympathy for murderers....comments like "poor soul" & posters trying to find excuses for him. Honestly, I don't care what the guy was going through, there is never an excuse for murder.

I am sure Pioli and Romeo wont even have their heads on the game tomorrow. Its a meaningful game.I wish they wouldnt play it.

I really hope the media doesn't try to interview either of them just to get the "scoop".

Leave them both alone for a long while. What they saw and how they feel is no one's damn business.

Good luck with that Slick.

The report is that, after talking with Crennel, Pioli and LB Coach Gary Gibbs, Belcher saw the cops, turned, walked away and then shot himself with those 3 looking on.

As has been mentioned, though, we don't know the circumstances of "WHY" it all happened. We may never know unless his mom (who was first reported as the GF's mom) makes a statement about the argument that seems to have precipitated the incident.

Thanx DaB, So Tragic!

Have you heard of multi quote?

You have valid points but before you pass judgement you really should know the facts. Nothing excuses murder but until you know the facts that led up to the circumstance, you can't pass judgement for sure.

The one thing I hate is calling someone who kills himself after a 'coward'. I'm far from a coward yet I'd never have the guts to shoot myself. For someone to shoot themselves it takes a serious amount of clout....and for that there has to be something seriously wrong in their head.

This is very tragic or both sides and you don't know either of them or the situation.

Why do you feel sympathy for a murderer?

That's easy - because I can feel sympathy for all human beings. And I hope the day never comes when I can't.

24 hours ago Jovan Belcher wasn't a murderer. He was a 25 year old kid who had a dream life. Money, family, celebrity. He'd made it as a starter from being a UDFA, and while he may have been "demoted" one game that's hardly the end of his career. From all accounts he had never been a problem player, no history of erratic behavior or substance history. His highh school coach described him as "upbeat, respectful and inspirational" and called him "an outstanding individual, a kid I looked up to":

And now he's a murderer and a suicide, a guy who left his 3 month old daughter an orphan and who shattered the lives of many around him. Something obviously went horribly wrong, and he handled it in the worst way possible. As I've said several times, there's no excusing or justifying what he did - which is exactly why he deserves my sympathy.

Very sad and tragic day ... RIP

beautiful, young family. makes you wonder how things could go so wrong. such a waste.

I hate that people always seem to find the need to go that route. There doesn't seem to be any indication there was any question it was his dna.

I think from what we can decipher it seems most likely the issues were related to control, trust and jealousy - the usual suspects in these cases. The couple argued frequently and the three year relationship was somewhat off and on as a result. Reportedly she was still persuing a degree although she had taken the semester off after the birth of Zoey. She was attending a concert with a group of friends and went for a drink afterwards. He was reportedly texting her throughout about when she would be home. That was the argument they had at 1AM when she did return home. And it continued shortly before 8AM and escalated to the point he killed her even in the presence of his own mother.

Belcher was said to be passionate and emotional, not to mention driven to succeed. Maybe he was that way in his relationships as well as in his career. When he was at Maine he had an incident following a relationship breaking up where he punched a mesh reinforced window and nearly severed his thumb. He had no history of violence against women, but he had a history of losing control when a relationship wasn't panning out. College coaches and teamates chalked that up to emotional immaturity and assumed he no longer was. That may have been wishful thinking.

Unfortunately he may have merely gone from being an emotional kid who punched windows when a romantic relationship didn't pan out as envisioned to a millionaire NFL player with a Bentley and a gun faced with another relationship that perhaps wasn't panning out as he envisioned. Often times in that kind of relationship it becomes less about cheating than if I can't have you no one can. Which is a little different than, say, what Rae Carruth did...taking the life of a woman carrying his child and nearly taking the life of that child in the process lest either of them somehow threaten his future earnings. One was a crime of passion, the other a greed based premeditated crime of convenience.

Belcher also suffered at least one concussion since joining the NFL back in 2009, his rookie season, following which he played in a game 4 days later. For all we know he could have done some things to increase his odds of making it at the next level in the interim that impacted his mental state. Guys clawing their way to that all important second contract, especially as UDFA's and late round draft picks, can become goal obcessed to a fault (some fans persist really shouldn't be seen as one). He was also playing on a RFA tender this season, the second round tender of $1.9M following 3 years at minimun salary. Ergo he was in a contract season on a 1-10 team likely to be blown up. Brady Quinn was interviewed and said that once again teamates are questioning why they didn't see or sense whatever was brewing with a guy they spent countless hours a day with. They all thought he was not only a great teamate but happy as could be apart from the game with his relationship and his new family.

Of course none of this excuses or even mitigates what he did. But seeking explanations is not about exusing so much as understanding the behavior in the hopes that understanding helps someone else avoid it going forward. Tortured souls do foolish and at times heartless things. For relative strangers that wipes out the possibility they ever did anything good or right. Not so easy for those closest to them to come to the same conclusion. What was that Jesus supposedly said...love the sinner hate the sin? Tough days ahead starting at noon today for his family, friends, past and present teamates. I'd say for Chief's fans but reading the board at Chief's Planet they don't really seem to have many lately, just self absorbed, disgruntled consumers who wish ill on their own players and want Pioli fired so badly some are even upset that a tragedy of this magnitude might preclude or delay that...
