Looks like the Pats will be in London longer than expected

I would just like to point out that anyone who thinks they're being shrewd in saying this wont be a bad storm, or that its somehow a supermarket scam, have absolutely no clue what they're talking about. This is going to be an 800 mike wide event. Of course it could affect the pats flight plans. And anyone who knows the meteorological community even poorly would get that this isn't seen as just another Irene (your local media isn't the national weather service people). Also, calling for a snowstorm is much different (less time) than calling for a week long, 800 mile wide storm. Why there is hype with this is obvious. Cripes

I'm an Emergency Response Official for the RI, I could be busy in the upcoming days.

The hype is real if you live near the water. Storm surge in lower areas, plus the streams which are even worse. Streams around here flood during a normal storm, I know people who had water in their house from Irene so this will be the same or worse for them. Also the power outages in some places where the companies aren't as strong as say NYC and its suburbs.

If you live in a higher area it might not be too much worse (or not at all) than Irene though.

All the better for living in Canada.

My most sincere prayers to all who get hit by the storm. Hope you all are fine.

The 5th Quarter said The Pats were taking off at 5AM tomorrow. Kind of a risky landing when they arrive?

Not risky so much as uncomfortable. 747s can handle very severe weather but there could be some stained undies.

Isn't this team banged up enough?!

Should be OK. They approach from the NNE in a 747 and the edge winds we'll be experiencing in the Boston area should only be in the 30MPH range with occasional gusts closer to 50MPH. The winds will pick up and become more consistent after about 11AM. They should be on the ground before 8AM and back in Foxboro before 10AM and home shortly thereafter. It's the 24 hours from noon Monday until noon Tuesday that will be the worst of what we see inland from the coast. But aside from the coast, it won't compare with what others are going to experience. We're looking at <2" of rain in the Boston area.

Odd that Kraft didn't have sufficient pull either with the airline or the airport to get out of London before midnight tonight. If they are planning on leaving at 5AM the plane is likely already on the ground.

He's a businessman. He's not God. You think the couple-hundred employees of Heathrow would just smile and be happy to work hours of overtime on a Sunday night for one single flight? They don't give a rat's behind when the Patriots get home.

The patriots might be taking off but landing in BOS or JFK or PHL or IAD?. I spent the last 24 hours trying to get to JFK and other northeast destinations and these airports are closed (or closing as we speak). All airlines have cancelled all flights. Unless the storm significantly fizzles, the Patriots will not be in BOS until Wednesday at the earliest.

I would fly to a Charlotte or Atlanta. Better for them to be in the US with a short jump home then still in London on Tuesday.

I would think it would be a bit safer for the team to land in Maine then have to jet down south,by the time Sandy gets to the far north she will be just a low pressure system and most of its luster gone,I don't see major damage up there.

Portland forecast:Windy with showers. High 56F. Winds NE at 25 to 35 mph. Chance of rain 40%. Winds could occasionally gust over 50 mph.

I think Maine makes sense too. I'm sure Kraft will be consulting us.

I would agree with Maine though a landing there is iffy. I'm trying to remember my take off/landing info but I believe a 40 knot crosswind is the general max (based on a 757, maxes will be different based on the plane type). However, this is with a dry runway. When the runway is wet the limit decreases quite a bit. Maine may or may not be good based on the forecast.
(((again this is based on a hazy recollection)))

Flying farther south would be insanity. Just because you can't get a flight doesn't mean the actual airports close. Logan probably won't throughout, although they may shut down operations for a time between mid day tomorrow through mid day Tuesday simply because they won't have planes to land or take off because of airline cancellations which are largely preplanned due to not wanting their aircraft or crews at their expense stuck in the midst of a storm.

Again, the storm isn't going to get bad here until mid day tomorrow and into tomorrow night. Schools are closed tomorrow and the state is closing it's offices and asking private employers to consider doing the same. Not because you won't be able to get around at all tomorrow, but because by mid day you won't want to be out in it and they don't want a lot of people other than first responders clogging up the works. The MBTA is still running and has not announced any plans to shut down (although they likely will by mid afternoon). It's not the wind speed that will do the damage here, it's the duration. FWIW the weather channel is on the the background and they just said there are NY area airports (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark) remain open at this time.

Why do these "Storms of a Lifetime" happen every year? Why are there "100 year storms" every decade?

For us it will be no worse than a northeaster...albeit with with huge seas....

It is all a plot by the supermarkets to clean their shelves...

Umm, I just got home with a ton of canned food, so I guess the conspiracy worked! Darn you Walmart for cutting prices and selling canned goods during hurricane season! I'll just bet that Walmart operates a powerful windmaker somewhere off the Atlantic coast!!

All the snow storms you people face and you're worried about a tropical storm?:snob:

people on the coast where it can flood should worry..but here in central MA...not worried at all..i will be running errands all day tomorrow. They are hyping it like it's the end of the world here in MA...i can see it for the coast..but not central MA at all

Id onlye be concerned if I lived on or near the coast, the storm surge is supposed to be one of the highest on record and a lot of towns are evacuating anyone that lives in a flood zone.
The worst that may happen here is we lose power, and if National Grid does another bang up job we should have it back within a week or so
I got a generator so Ill be living in comfort this go around.

If they are thinking about Maine, then they'd be heading to Bangor, not Portland. Longer runways, and better facility since it's an International Airport.

Easy enough, if needs be, to fly into Bangor and take the team home on buses. The route from London to the US goes up north anyway, makes landfall around Gander, Newfoundland, then heads south along the coast.

I live 2 miles from Charlestown Beach in southern RI...access within 1/2 mile of the ocean has been shut down by police and families evacuated.

Unfortunately for the CL's who hate homer fans like me, I have a 6k Honda generator hooked into a transfer box next to the mains...power goes offline, the generator kicks in...and I'm STILL here talking Pats and optimistically looking forward to the rest of the year...which really really pi$$es some people off for some reason.
