Thank goodness.

And now with the real refs in place we can get the Jets out of 1st place and assume our rightful place in the AFC East. Of course this all hinges on us winning in Buffalo Sunday.

Don't worry about the Bills.

Their two wins are over KC at home and a close game against the Browns. So while we have lost 2 games on last second FG attempts to 5-1 teams, they have 2 wins against 1-5 teams. And they got blown out by the Jests.

Their season ends over the next 3 weeks.

Patriots, then on the road to SF and Arizona in consecutive weeks.

Western NY will be dark by mid-October.

Return Of The Ref-I

The NFL announced the following terms to the deal:

Eight-year term covering the 2012-2019 seasons.
The current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season (or until the official earns 20 years of service). The defined benefit plan will then be frozen.
Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution arrangement, which will have two elements: an annual league contribution made on behalf of each game official that will begin with an average of more than $18,000 per official and increase to more than $23,000 per official in 2019, and a partial match on any additional contribution that an official makes to his 401(k) account.
Apart from their benefit package, the game officials’ compensation will increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019.
Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option of hiring a number of officials on a full-time basis to work year-round, including on the field.
The NFL will have the option to retain additional officials for training and development purposes, and may assign those additional officials to work NFL games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the NFL.

Hopefully Felger will again be able to pronounce the NFL the best run league in the world, greedy stupid owners and all. People have no idea what goes into being just that. If you cave every time someone wants something that isn't in your best long term interest just to placate your critics and keep the short term peace, you become just like the rest. The league got what it wanted again. And the world didn't end in the process. A couple of teams probably had their W/L record impacted by blown or phantom calls, but that happens most every season.

Had to trade off 5 more years in the defined benefit plan in the end, but that offer didn't come from the union until Tuesday. Before that they were dug in on continuing it for all existing 121 officials. And before that they were totally unwilling to part with it. And in the interim the league got what it ultimately wanted. To close the books on it's defined benefit plan, the ability to hire full time officials going forward if it chooses to, the ability to hire developmental officials beginning in 2013 and to use them on the field at their discretion. And to compensate the officials at the rate they were essentially offering from the outset (average of $149K rising to $200K+ over the term of the deal.

That and an 8 year term (union wanted 6 again) seem to be what the league got because it was willing to face a short term PR hit that actually garnered them and the football media who loves to diss them more attention than ever. And they got it by week 4 which hystrionics aside was probably always the goal because of the imbalance concern (bye weeks start in week 4). Same way they got the players deal done by week 1 of TC, just in time to save the pre season when the $$ starts to stream in.

Now we can get back to talking football, at least until the disgruntled Saints 4 or the NFLPA mounts it's next courtroom assault or until the regular refs commit their first next totally egregious game changing blown or phantom call. And one of Rodgers or Brees are out of excuses.

This is like getting a major player back from injury for us. We have been screwed to the max in the last two games by the replacement refs.

Now we'll get screwed by the regular refs. :D

Seriously, welcome back refs. You have been missed.

Though I'm sure it won't take more than 5 minutes into the 1st quarter to start booing them again...

I'd love to see the ownership in every NFL city take out a full page ad in the Sunday AM edition of their primary news paper extending an apology to the fans. I just kind of feel like they toyed with my emotions and while I will always be a Pats fan, I can't get over the bitter taste this leaves.

Good news:

Real officials are back

Bad news:

Now I'll probably watch tomorrow's game

And it means the Ravens are probably going to trounce the Browns... as much as the replacements were intimidated by home crowds, they were so wonky that it actually would have given Cleveland a crazy chance to win.

And I should say in general, I gave the replacements the benefit of the doubt and thought they would get better as the season went on. I could not have been more WRONG, and would like my crow with some extra butter if I could...

If the game were in Cleveland, I'd have probably picked the Browns to win this one. The Ravens are terrible on the road and they're probably emotionally and physically spent after Sunday night. But somehow they get 3 of the first 4 games at home, no way they lose this one

Can we get them out of the division, or better yet, out of the NFL entirely?

THAT, is THEIR rightful place.

Agreed, who gets Ed Hoculie first?

As far as the new deal goes, I knew the NFL wouldn't take my 3 day boycott lightly. You've got to fight for your rights people

I bet the refs get cheered in every stadium when they come on the field. I bet the refs screw some call up in some game and get booed off the field when leaving.

Fans are fickle.

Baltimore should be booing the real refs coming back after week 3's win. No one benefited more than Baltimore and Seattle last week from the ineptitude of those guys.

Nothing would make me laugh more, then for the ravens to get blown out, and have flacco blames the reg refs after the game.
