Omar Kelly on possible Vjax to Pats

This is a tough one. I've only seen him play against us, but he's consistently put on about the best performances by a WR against us I've ever seen.

But there are three reasons not to sign him: the one-strike-away-from-suspension problem, the possibility he doesn't learn the offense, and the cost.

But his presence on this O could be just amazing.

Tempting...

I'm not at all a fan of signing VJax. First, it will likely cost $10+ million a season, which would mean we probably couldn't re-sign Welker, because that is too much to tie up in 2 WR's. This offense is based around being on the same page with the QB, and there isn't a player in the league that has a better on field relationship with Brady than Welker. We have no idea how VJax would not only fit the system, but work with Brady. At $10mil a year that is too big of a risk. The other issue of course is character. As Warren94 said, he may be 1 strike away from a year long suspension. To me, thats way too many risks for a guy when there is a strong FA and Draft Class for WR.

this......the risk is not worth the money for the pats. the net difference between VJ and someone for half the money will not be good value, especially with the risk involved.

he does have a tendency to disappear against better secondaries, and does not see the endzone nearly as much as he should given his size

Can you give me an example? Bobby Meachum? I'm all for Brandon Lloyd but he will be expensive as well. Maybe 75% (roughly) of Vjax.

BB seems to like players who do well against the Pats and Vjax looked unreal against them this year.

As always it will come down to money and I see him getting more elsewhere.

A player with major alcohol issues living in Boston after being in the land of constantly beautiful temperatures and plenty to do. What could possibly go wrong?

I'm not sure if the money is worth it either. I'll let the team decide on that one.

To be fair, from my eyes San Diego does seem to run the ball and Vjax draws the best Cb as well as see's a lot of double teams. Also has a QB who seems to not be able to shrug off his tight end who was an interception machine this year.

As far as the end zone he would be phenomenal for the Patriots. Gronkowski,Hernadez, Welker and Vjax. Pick your posion. It's unstoppable and would be the best red zone offense the league has ever seen.

If it came down to him and Mario I'd take the defensive guru all day and Tuesday. But I must admit the thought is quite intriguing.

all the options are not currently available since decisons need to be made the next coupld of weeks with regards to cap space, but...

early doucet
pierre garcon
jerome simpson
eddie royal (he got screwed by tebowmania and would be good for special teams)

if you're going to spend the money on jackson, I'd rather get bowe.....more all-around effectiveness with bums throwing him the ball......he could be a monster with someone like brady throwing him the ball

FYI: Ever since I started using Safari it quite often changes words completely and erroneously on me. So much for Apple AI. The worst is that since I don't see error indicators I don't notice the error until it's posted. Bad news on sites that don't let you post edit.

That's why Chrome is better than Safari... Just saying *GRIN*:D

If the cap is 120m. I think it's Welker or Jackson. Not both. Sounds like we're going to tag Wes. Just not enough room to address other needs and sign VJax.

funny, signing wes to a 3 year deal would be much more efficient than tagging him.

in what way?
Spending that much money on 3 players to the detriment of the rest of the roster, and expecting that the #2 passing offense of all time will improve by getting rid of its top 2 WRs and adding new guys who have to adjust to the system.

Im fairly certain Tune was talking about Omar Kelly thinking that the part after twitter was included in his rumor.

Trusting or believing?
I hope so.

FWIW, that supposed Patriots insider who posted occasionally on the ESPN message board a few years back did say that Belichick loved Vincent Jackson and he would have made a play for him two years ago if he was available (the Chargers were able to give Jackson the highest RFA tag because he became a RFA because of the uncapped year rules).

I know the guy was probably bogus, but we may find out in a few weeks that he wasn't or at least he was ultimately a lucky guesser.

Maybe Omar Kelly = ESPN Pats Insider haha

I think they are going to have to bite the bullet and offer Welker 3 yrs in this case, possibly even 4. That would offer more stability from Welker's point of view, and also increase the guaranteed money. I don't blame him when you consider that this is it, as far as being his one and only chance at a long term deal in the NFL.

pats dont have to bite any bullet. all they have to do is tag him

Not saying we should do this, but would our offense really suffer if we let Welker walk?

Let's face the facts, Brady looks for Welker a lot, maybe too much.

So what is Brady missing by reading Welker first and then the TE's second? Are there opportunities downfield that are ignored because Brady is reading "short to long" instead of "long to short"?

A guy like Jackson can easily beat the press at the LOS and then explode downfield, lots of opportunity for Brady to drop in passes to him before the safety can slide over.

If the safety cheats over to Jackson's side, then Gronkowski or Her"drop"nez will have LBer coverage down the seam. Doesn't get any easier than that.

Ochmed Jones that's kinda funnny but true...we need to think outside the box people.:D

if they can't work something out by monday the pats will tag welker. They will work to get a contract though because if not thats 9.5 mil against the cap space. If they work out a deal thats 4.5 mil this year with a roster bonus, then just the 4.5 mil counts against the cap. So add that in with the fact that we may lower or get rid of ochocinco's salary this year and we have even more money to work with. That should allow us to pick up vjax, colston, OR whoever else it is that can help this team now!

I'd love to have Vjax in our offense but the one year suspension does scare me. Any way we can sign him with a clause that protects us financially if he does get suspended?

I'm sure that can be done. The thing is this: if a suspension were to happen at some point, then the Pats will have already passed on other players that are no longer available and could have helped the team this year and beyond.

Thats what sucks about Vjax. He makes stupid decisions. Is that going to stop BB from pursuing him? No, not at all because he's not scared to go after risky players. But when you look at the FA wideout class and you have someone like Colston who basically fits right into the Patriot Way, it def makes you think twice about wanting to pick up Vjax
