One of my thoughts for this season so far is that, perhaps this offense presents more problems for opponents even more so than the 07 offense. And I don't mean so much as in scoring, records, yards and touchdowns which alot of that has been made regardless, but in matchups, redzone effectiveness and winning one on one battles.
1. In 07 you had Randy Moss deep, Wes Welker underneath, and Jabar Gaffney and Donte Stallworth to add. At tightend, you had Ben Watson and Laurence Maroney along with Kevin Faulk and Sammy Morris at runningback. Now you have Wes Welker deep and underneath, Deion Branch long and short as well as outside, Julian Edelman essentially another effective slot-man, Chad Ochocinco who potentially creates way more issues for opponents than Gaffney and Stallworth, the best tightend in football possibly the greatest ever, and another tightend, who is also elite with more speed and versatility than his counterparts along with an entire slew of effective runningbacks who can do it all.
2. In 2007, opponents would try and eliminate Wes Welker underneath, than Randy Moss long and your in... But now you have to worry about Rob Gronkowski long, Wes Welker also long, Aaron Hernandez long, Deion Branch who can get long and Chad who can also still get long. Not to mention more weapons underneath outside of Wes in Edelman, Woodhead, Faulk if needed be, and even Green-Ellis who will try and receive in the flats. Tiquan Underwood and Matthew Slater, whos to say they won't do what they are asked too as well if thrown in the mix.
3. The running game also presents more issues. Danny Woodhead, the ever so elusive shifty and super quick runningback finds invisible holes and bursts through them. He can become a very good receiving threat, kind of like an additional Wes Welker, Deion Branch or Julian Edelman. Additionally, BenJarvus Green-Ellis is underrated and can find those open holes to tough his way through for a good 6 to 10 yards. He has shown the ability to carry a game if needed be and can really become a powerful horse-like patient ball carrier for wearing a defense down. Last but not least, Stevan Ridley shows alot of promise, potential and spark with his speed and accelaration. This does twice as much damage for us at the runningback position this time around not to mention that Aaron Hernandez looked really good taking handoffs busting off about a 60 yarder for the first runplay of the game against Denver.
It is literally virtually impossible for ANY defense to match up with all of those dangerous New England running and receiving weapons.
