Pats release Leigh Bodden

Would not be surprised if Bodden asked to be released. Honestly, that is the only thing that really makes sense to me..

It's possible, but I think it comes down to cap savings. Bodden was getting paid the 2nd most on the team (after Brady), but he was our #3/4 CB. He wasn't living up to his contract so he got cut. Not sure what BB will do with the money at this point in the season, but he has it now.

Shaun Ellis is probably next given the cap number to productivity measure.

Sanders isn't even getting on the field anymore in Atlanta.

Dude what happens to sanders in Atlanta is irrelevant. We should only care what his value to us would have been.

Bodden is a vested veteran , he is getting paid no matter what.

I don't think so. Check the depth charts of their respective teams.

I checked the stats from Pro-Football-Reference.com, and used their data. They're usually excellent on this. Someone posted links to NFL.com refuting some of that data, and I'll take the NFL.com data as correct. It changes my point a bit on a per-player basis, but it doesn't really matter overall.

Meriweather was playing a lot in Chicago until the team got smoked and Lovie scapegoated his safeties. Butler's starting in Carolina. Wilhite's playing, and getting starts, in Denver. Sanders was playing in Atlanta, but someone said his time had diminished, and he apparently either aggravated an earlier injury or suffered another one. Whether one is related to the other or not, I don't know. No matter how you slice it, though, the players have gotten their time and haven't just been a bunch of benchwarmers.

At this point in the year, I just can't see(in Bodden's case) money being a issue(Think Adalius Thomas). Bodden's agent saying it is mutual, makes me say hmm.

Who knows? Next man up...

This is the essence of my thoughts on this transaction.
Players come, players go. I loathe to see some go (Bruschi, Seymour come to immediate recollection), but this one? I will have forgotten his name in a month or so....

based on the reports of his slippage in play, his reluctance to play the slot corner, his cap number. and the need to create roster spots for people coming off of PUP, this cut is surprising but makes a lot of sense as well.....EXCEPT for the timing. Why now. Especially given the news that Dowling isn't going to play. Why didn't they wait until AFTER the Steeler game to let him go?

The only thing I can think of was that he wasn't completely healthy. IIRC didn't Bedard mention that when he saw him in the locker room he wasn't w halking well? If he isn't hurt than cutting him at THIS moment makes no sense

What you fail to mention is Butler and Wilhite are both playing on two win teams. If they were getting reps on the Packers or the 49ers than this would be a different story.

As for Meriweather, he was terrible here and we was terrible with the Bears. He got benched one, because his play is awful and two, because he's a safety concern. The guy's been talked to the league on multiple occasions about his reckless tackling.

I didn't fail to mention anything, as all I was doing was responding to a post:

Maybe we will be able to add Bodden to the list of secondary cuts now riding the pine for other teams - Wilhite, Meriwhether, Sanders, Butler.

It'll help everyone if you read threads before commenting on them....

Actually, Salary wise, Bodden had the second highest salary at $3.9 million. He also had the 2nd highest salary cap hit at $5.5 Million. However, all that money is gone unless someone claims him off waivers. They don't free up any money.

According to Miguel's site, we would have saved $3,450,000 if we cut him at the beginning of this year. So if we prorate that we save about $2,000,000 this year.

A good chunk of change right there. Any way you cut it, Bodden was horrendously overpaid.

No he's a vested vet, his contract is guaranteed this year. Pats save nothing this year from cutting him now. He might be overpaid now but when the Pats extended him he was playing really well... He was our best corner.

Ok so i didn't read the 30 pages in this thread. But has there been any explination fron Reese? BB? the organisation? and chatter why this may be the case now? It just seems like an odd move to me.

It saves us 2million, so theres one reason. I bet others have mentioned this but maybe it bodes well for Ras-I's fitness.

I can tell you one thing... time to add a CB into your mock drafts hahah

Oh yeah, I forgot that rule. My bad.

Have we released or cut this many people before? Ever? I know guys were just not resigned, and some were traded, but I don't quite remember a preseason and season like this before.
You just have to stay tune as a week without paying attention can see you miss the time the Pats cut Brady.

See this is the annoying part. Next year will mostl ikely mark the 6th year in a row we've spent at least 1 1st or 2nd rounder on a DB, and our secondary is still far from set, if anything it might be a weakness right now. That's inexcusable. At least start trying to draft something else when it's pretty clear you aren't hitting with the DB's. BB has drafted exactly 1 above average DB in his 12 drafts here, 2 if McCourty regains his 2010 playing level. That's out of maybe 20+ picks spent on DB's. And as I said earlier, alot were 1st/2nd rounders.

First chance I have had to post on this thread; couldnt when news broke and man it takes forever to read a 15 page thread. So a lot of ground has been covered - without searching out the posts I found silly/objectionable/illogical etc. I'll just randomly answer them here:

1. HOW COME NOBODY SAID THANKYOU???????
Leigh Bodden may have had some injury problems that derailed his time here; but when he came here he did good and filled a big hole. (and to those who said different - Bob Kraft and a $22M extension say hello. If he wasn't good he wouldn't have seen the money) SO; we should all express a few words of thanks to him for his Patriot time. It doesnt seem like this is an acrimonious split (no he-said/she-said to the press); so lets be gentlemanly.

2a. ALL these complaints on the guys cut now starting for other teams. Been mostly covered - I think the biggest part of it is being used differently in a different system. particularly I think BBs system calls for DBs to be a lot less free-lance and more regimented to stick to their responsibilities than many other coordinators. That led to Asante's demise here and could be w/ Bodden.

2b. But no one mentioned one other factor: Some of these guys could have had their COMPLACENCY SHOCKED OUT OF THEM BY THE CUT. Maybe they weren't working as hard here as they should; and when they went to their new team they started putting in the effort they should have w/ the Pats.

3. ok I will cover some old ground - the PUP OR IR CHOICE is a HUGE DRIVING FACTOR. Faulk and Deadrick etc could be HUGE additions to the team on Sunday. A disaffected, non-ST playing #5 DB (former #2) how has some nicks and dings is possibly not gonna help you that much more than a couple of 4th round thru-UFA, 8-year younger guys who have taken coaching more readily. Whereas adding the clutch playmaker or the guy who is going to get your DL rested and able to continue pressuring rapistberger is a definitive addition to the team.

4. one last point - the hole issue of slot/#3 CB seems to be the big elephant in the room. BB has showed the league the benefits of TEs to break down defenses and most of the league is trying to copy -it seems there is a lot more teams who key on TE receiving play now. Welker is showing them what a quick-cutting slot guy can do. Some are going to copy that too (or already have) and that requires a CB w/ less straight speed (outside DBs) and more cutting short burst speed. MAYBE THESE YOUNGER GUYS HAVE THOSE SKILLS?

5. Remmber when Meriweather bit the dust and then quietly a week later the Boston police report the arrest of someone for RAPE at Merri's house. Pats didn't bad mouth him when they let him go; but I guarantee that had a WHOLE BUNCH to do with it. So they may not say anything bad about Bodden right now either; but stay tuned - I would totally NOT BE SURPRISED to hear in two to three weeks about some issue that could result in league disciplinary action at worst or just makes the franchise look bad.

BOTTOM LINE: Sign me up as koolaid slurping member of the IN BB WE TRUST club. He has seen the practices, knows the guys and how he wants to use them. Obviously he thinks the drop off is not as much as to be gained from getting other guys on the roster. WE SHALL SEE.

2011 Cap Hit if Cut 2011 Cap Savings if Cut or Traded 2012 Cap Hit if Cut or Traded

TDELETED b/c they were mayo's #'s check patscap.com for the 3 some odd million eah year we are on the hook for.

we are only on the hook for the 2011 cap hit right??? We save 3.2 plus million of space b/c of this move:)

he is off our books for 2012 since he is cut NOW right?

You said he was cut NOW for cap savings...
Pats owe approx. $3.43M against the Cap for Bodden and that would increase to the full $5.5 million in 2011 if Bodden clears waivers with no takers. And worse cutting him hits us with 3 million in dead money for 2012.

What was your point about IR again???

Two thoughts:

1) Amazing to look at how much the Pats have invested (high picks, free agents, etc) in the secondary in recent years and it is still a big question mark.

2) We as fans tend to underestimate the impact major injuries can have on a player's career. A constant mantra on this board during the offseason focused on Warren, Wright, and Bodden being back, good as new. None of them were able to come back as effective players.
