Shaun Ellis agrees to terms with Pats

You are correct. This was mentioned when Ellis first came in for a visit.

Incorrect.

Ellis was drafted #12 with the pick the Jets picked up in a trade with San Francisco.

San Francisco used New England’s pick, acquired via the Jets in the trade for Julian Peterson.

While the Jets used the Patriots #16 to move up, they also had a pick at #18 or could have put together any number of different packages to move up to #12 if they were so inclined.

But saying that Ellis was the taken with the Patriots pick/Belichick compensation is flat out not accurate.

I really dont think Jets fans are worried about Ocho...he's been stuck on Revis Island for 3 years

Playing for the Bungles with Carson Palmer throwing to him. USC QBs leave a lot to be desired. Im sure you already know. :D

The times they are a changing.

If that was the front 4, that would be an amazingly stout line to try and run against. The "weak link" there is Wright and he's no push-over at RDE..

BTW, Ellis plays DE in both the 3-4 AND the 4-3. Found that tidbit to be interesting.

It will be stout. Whether it be a 4-3 or 3-4 we are better for the signing. Talent and depth wise as well as the ability to scheme. If BB can get these guys on the same page, who gets the double teams? Opponnents are also going to have to account for the LB and safety blitzes as well as one of these behemoths getting one on one blocking.

I hate to make predictions but i can't help but think this could be a very special defense provided the pieces fall in place.

Interesting signing.

I like the fact that he can play end in both 3-4 and 4-3. That provides the versatility Belichick craves.

There are lots of 'can't have too much depth on the DL' comments. Well, you sort of can have too much depth. With over a dozen viable DL players on the roster, it will set up some tough cuts. This was probably the youngest position on the roster last year, with Brace, Deaderick, Pryor, Love, Cohen, Favorite, Weston. The Patriots, with the Stroud, Haynesworth, and Ellis moves were clearly concerned not so much about depth as lack of experience and capability.

I thought Brace, Deaderick, Pryor, and Love would have a shot at three DL spots. Now that looks down to two.

It looks like two of that group are gone.

This also sets up lots of rotations.

At 4-3 DT, the Pats can rotate Wilfork, Haynesworth, and say Wright, Brace and Pryor.
At 4-3 DE, the Pats can rotate Ellis, Cunningham, Ninkovich, Moore, and Anderson.

In a switch to 3-4:
NT - Wilfork, Pryor
DE - Hayneworth, Ellis, Wright
OLB - Cunningham, Ninkovich, Moore, Carter

If they play a base 3-4 a quarter of the time, that would seem a very good fit with Ellis' availability.

I am almost speechless.

I guess this is just another case of the Pats picking up the trash that couldn't make it on the Jets.

Yup. Jet fans aren't worried about him at all and very few are worried about Haynesworth for the simple fact he hasn't played actual football in 2 years. Losing Aso and Ellis though definitely ticked the fan base off.

Kind of like a 6 - 5 WR somebody recently signed. Who was that team?

I'm curious to see how much he's making for the Pats. We only offered him the vet minimum, so I'd imagine NE offered a tad bit more. Otherwise it makes little sense to me that he would switch teams, especially one that he's voiced such displeasure for in his tenure here in NY.

Rumor is that Ellis took less to sign with NE.

Like Aso did when he signed in Philly.

Eh! Ellis might be a good situational player, but I am not thrilled with the pick up. He was so-so last year and even his game vs. the Pats in the playoffs was overrated.

Joe - You're right. He wasn't taken with the 16th pick, but the 12th. But to say that he wasn't taken with the pick that was part of the compensation is what is inaccurate. Otherwise, how would the Jets have gotten to #12 without the 16th pick???? And to say they could have used #18 to do so isn't accurate either because that would have required them to add something more to their trade with San Fran..

You're preaching to the choir here. I expect very little from Plaxico for this season as our #3. I think he has some upside, chip on his shoulder, etc, but I am very leery of him producing at a high level because of the layoff. I'm in the minority on this though. Most Jet fans think he's gonna come in and be a world beater.

Also, Aso didn't take less money to sign with Philly. It was never mentioned what we offered Aso, so you can't make that statement with 100% accuracy. Aso signed with Philly because he felt they gave him the best chance to win, plain and simple.

The trash that couldn't make it on the Jets??

Come on now. The Jets are more well known for picking up the Pats trash (Crable, O'Connell).

And, Ellis is trash now?? I have even more reason to look forward to the Jets game..

Didnt he wear down last year?

The Jets were/are thin on the DL and didnt Ellis for the most part play from start to finish?

some people are really stupid.

If your going to throw trash away like Woodehead and Ellis then sure, call us dumpster divers if you wish. :)

Of course! Apparently, he's trash because he refused to sign with the Jets. Had he signed, they be throwing a party and talking about how he's going to destroy the Patriots.

I rather have OSI as the DE, but Ellis is the 2nd fiddle.

He has insight on the Jets-D, he has a grudge against the Jets, and he is out to prove people wrong (ala Haynesworth).

He is a veteran, and a leader (no attitude in locker). He can play 4-3 and 3-4.

He lost a step, but, is not an everyday starter.

He was a pro-bowl replacement in 2010.

I think it was a better move, than to get TommieHarris or Raheem...

IMO

I seem to recall you having a lot of respect here as a fan of one of our biggest rivals.

But i'm guessing it wasn't b/c of comments like this.

You sound bitter about this. The guy didn't play like trash at all last year against the Pats.

I've always like Ellis. Interesting note: I think Ellis was the player selected with the 1st round pick that the Patriots gave up for hiring BB.

I may be wrong about that but that is how I recall it.

Yep. So the pats get BB, along with 3 rings, a decade (plus) of domination, and now they get that player anyways.

Jets are amusing. They may not win anything, but at least they talk big.

Ahh.... a Woodhead reference. Well played, sir. Well played.

I dont buy it.

The Jets canned Cromartie after spending a 2nd round pick on him after 1 season. They were desperate for a CB. Kyle Wilson has underwhelmed. Everyone knew what the cost was for Aso's services.

So the Jets bid was the same or less than the Eagles? Really? They bid less than Dallas when Cromartie wasnt supposed to be back?
