Maybe Burt should donate his...:D

Lance Zeirlien of the Houston Chronicle, a respected NFL insider, gives support to Bert saying his sources say the lockout could be over soon

+1. There does seem to be a definite toning down of argumentative rhetoric from both sides, and a general feeling of things being a bit more "easy going" over the past 2 weeks.

The positive signs are definitely there. I feel much better about these dealing than I felt about the sham negotiations from early March.

Burt didn't originally say it could be over soon. He said it was over.

As with Bill Clinton, the tense and usage of the pesky verb of being continues to be problematical for some.

Depends on what the meaning of the words tense and useage are :D

This report contradicts what Burt was saying. Burt said the lockout could be over as soon as tomorrow and coaches were told be ready to go back to work business as usual as soon as this weekend. This report is saying what everyone else in the world is saying that the lockout will be over late June or early July about three weeks after when Burt said it would end.

No one is disputing Burt's claim that the sides are getting close to a deal. What people have exposed as utter BS is that the deal is imminent like as soon as tomorrow.

In fact, he said what Burt was reporting is impossible in the first paragraph of the story:

After reading a report from an online newspaper that an agreement had been reached and that the NFL lockout was likely over, I decided to call a couple of league sources (both on the players’ side) to find out whether or not they knew if there was any truth to this report. The first source said that the report was impossible because the players hadn’t been asked to vote on any new proposal. However, there was also some very good news.

Fact of the matter is when both sides come to an agreement, then both sides have to vote to approve the deal. When the deal is days away from being finalized, we will know because the players will meet one place and the owners will meet another and the press will know.

I would guess that if they had a deal to vote on tomorrow, that both sides could get the vote done tomorrow.

Also, the point is that other people are starting to say it looks like a deal could be done soon (big change). It seems Bert is being just a bit more optimistic.

Yeah, he jumped the gun. Good news nonetheless. He'll take heat for it though even if they reach a tentative agreement in a week.

It's hardly surprising given the reportedly reduced role of lawyers in the current negotiations.

wake me up when football starts

The Eagle Tribune, my local paper, is right about as often as Brady throws an interception.

They used to be a lot better until they ran Russ Conway out of town..

Lockout over?

Wheres the certificate?

As long as the start camp in July, I'll be happy...the sooner they get this BS over with, the better...get the rookies acclimated to workouts, playbooks, and the area......

Reaching an agreement in principle on the major issues (money split, rookie cap, blood testing, etc.) will be one thing...the biggest one but not the whole enchilada. The devil is always in the details and if you've never attempted to decipher it it will take a couple of weeks for the suits to write a new CBA (as opposed to amending an existing one which was all they had to do for the past 18 years). And that part is actually important since language often determines enforceability and how disputes are handled by an arbitrator going forward. Then before the deal can be finalized the association will have to vote to recertify itself as a union and both sides will have to vote on the actual CBA. So like the Yogi reference both sides aptly responded to reports of progress with this week, it ain't over 'til it's over.

The good news is not only are the sides meeting with the mediator present and making progress, they are meeting/talking apart from the mediator and even dining together in some instances. That's when the real dealing is done. It's more important they get it right this time than get it done in a timely manner according to fans and mediots. We don't want to be heading down this road again any time soon. They need to craft an agreement that can be extended with minimal periodic tweeking and no threat of work stoppage for the next two decades. If they can accomplish that and the price is only one effed up off season including even potentially adversely impacting the first year of the deal, so be it.

It's a freakin contract...not the Paris Peace Accords:rolleyes:

If they've reached an agreement in principle then that agreement would certainly allow for the preseason activities to begin as usual even if they are still dotting the i's and crossing the t's. So sure, it could take a couple weeks to officially finalize everything but that need not delay the start of camp.

I hope you're right !!!!! :rocker:

Have you ever attempted to read it?? It's not even remotely written in English, it's all in migraine inducing legalese...hundreds of pages worth including addenda and schedules and even pages of purported legalese to english definitions...it's worse than the Paris Peace Accords. And it's subject to interpretation by arbitrators...who are lawyers...

One reason the league should hold out for no judicial oversight this time is every time the arbitrator interprets something one way there were two courts who could interpret it another. No other league suffers that kind of hair splitting scrutiny nor should the NFL.

Joe Kerr is NOT a fan of hair splitting scrutiny either...:ugh:
