I actually think he's overrated because of the high tackle numbers he gets. I will give him credit for being a 3 down player, that is valuable on any team.

Not sure about the contention that too many tackles for a MLB is a bad thing.. in out defense the D-Line is supposed to tie up blockers, and LB's and DB's are supposed to make the tackles..
As far as not noticing his play on the field, not sure what game folks are watching.. he is all over the place..
He is now up to 164, leading the league..
On our team he is followed by.. McCourty(77), Chung(87), Arrington(62), Sanders(61), Meriweather(61), Sanders(57), Wilfork(50), Guyton, Spikes, Ninkovich, Tullly and Cunningham..
At one time Spikes was second, but has fallen off due to missing a couple of games..
In '04 for example Rodney and Tedy B. were our leading tacklers..
He gets all those tackles because we have the worst 3rd down defense in the NFL, meaning, we're on the field, getting many more plays run against us, until we intercept someone or force a fumble. We don't have the explosive player in our front 7 making tackles in the backfield, and many of our sacks are from the secondary taking away QB's options making him hold the ball longer than he wants.

We have a game where the D wasn't great (yet still won) and the pessimists come back
But that does not diminish his ability.... it does not make any difference how he gets them, he gets thems..
Go back and look at the stats from previous years, already pointed out in '04 our leading tacklers were Harrison and Bruschi..
In '03 it was Bruschi and Harrison..
IN '01 it was Milloy, Phifer, Law, Otis Smith and Bruschi..
Here is the first clue.. linebackers always lead the league in tackling..
Mayo's tackle count doesn't make him all-world like some of you want to believe. Why do you have a hard time believing that his tackles are absurdly high because the defense can't get off the field most of the time? Have you watched many games this season? Teams convert 3rd and 15 on a regular basis.
I honestly don't understand why "defense on field longer = more tackles" is a hard pill to swallow for everyone.
Name Tackles Snaps T/S

Tulloch 145 995 0.15
Greenway 127 839 0.15
Posluszny 126 936 0.13
Fletcher 124 925 0.13
Lews 124 875 0.14

Timmons 121 861 0.14
Willis 116 886 0.13
Anderson 115 921 0.12

I honestly don't understand why "defense on field longer = more tackles" is a hard pill to swallow for everyone. I love this team, I love Mayo, I love everything about it and wouldn't trade it for the 07 team. But holy crap, Mayo's tackles don't tell the whole story. I'm being REAL. Not a downer. Some of you are jizzing over a stat that isn't even official FAR too much.
Since you like stats so much:
Our defense is on the field for 32+ minutes a game on average.
Our defense has played the 4th most snaps in the NFL at 938.
Our defense has allowed 92/187 3rd downs. Nearly 50%
The saving grace is 29 take aways, some going back for scores, and some solid special teams play at times, giving points, preventing points, or great field position.
Good job pointing out the teams leading tacklers. My argument isn't about who is leading, or what position he plays. My argument is that tackles =! best MLB in nfl. Some people on this board want to believe that because Mayo is leading the league in a stat, that isn't even officially kept by the league, that he is the best MLB in the NFL. That's just silly. The tackle stat has no substance to it. Believe it or not, where and why he makes tackles IS important. If his tackles are 15 yards down field because he missed the first try but had good pursuit to catch does that make him the best? Even if he missed it? Are any in the backfield? We don't know. those would be awesome but "xxx number of tackles" doesn't tell us that. You can't look at the statistic alone and judge someone.
I'm actually not even sure what your argument is, as I never said that Mayo shouldn't have tackles, or shouldn't be leading the league in them. But the reason he is is NOT because he's all-world (he might just be, i am NOT denying that or diminishing his ability), but it's because the defense can't get off the field, and thrives on the big play. So NO **** our defensive players are going to have a boat load of tackles. That doesn't make them the best in the NFL.

I was arguing this point, that you made previously..
[/I][/B]
You seem to believe that the D line should be making all the tackles, go back and review the previous NFL stats.. LB's usually lead the league in tackles, in ''07, '08, '09 Patrick Willis, in '06 Zach Thomas, '05 Vilma, '04 Keith Bullock led the league in tackles..
It is a meaningless statistic, but you cannot read too much into why he has all the tackles.. what we do know is BB plays to his strengths.. Mayo is one.
Stats are for losers
Except when you want to argue that Mayo is an elite MLB because he has 40 more tackles than any other player.
