Brady, in the MVP race?

The only reason why Brady is in the MVP conversation is because of our record. He has not played at an MVP level and his numbers are worse than Rivers and Manning

Brady, in the MVP race? That's a good one.
He's on my list in the Most Disappointing Players thread.

If the season ended right now, who gets the MVP? Who has been so OBVIOUSLY better than Brady? Note, you can NOT Pick a player on a team that isn't in the playoffs (Manning, Rivers)

Rivers if the MVP was voted by rational people, and since it's not I don't really care what irrational people decide.

It's most VALUABLE player, not BEST player. The value of the best player on a 3rd place, non-playoff team?

That's like when people argued A-Rod should of won MVPs when he was playing for the last place Rangers teams. They were in last place with him and would still be in last place without him.

The value to his team is HUGE, more valuable than any other player in the NFL is to their team.

He sure as hell SHOULD have won the MVP for a decade straight. The MVP IS indeed the BEST player, it's just we have very illogical people assigning a flat out stupid meaning of the word valuable that is entirely team-based.

Pete just doesn't get it.

No, it's not the BEST player. It's the most VALUABLE to his team.

Phillip Rivers VALUE is that he makes the Chargers a 3rd place team in the AFC West instead of of perhaps a 4th place team. Tom Brady makes the Patriots tied for the best record in the NFL.

If you want to go on stats alone, then Phillip Rivers is a fine front-runner for offensive player of the year.

Wow!!! The Chargers would be 0-9 right now instead of 4-5 without Rivers. All of our wins are because of his stellar performance as QB and all of our losses this season can be attributed to the terrible play by our special teams and little help from the defense. By your logic Rex Grossman should have won the MVP a few years back when the Bears were 13-0 because he was on a team with a great record and went to the super bowl.

This is why the MVP awarding is so ridiculous; Rivers is punished for having a crappy head coach and crappy special teams even though he's playing insanely good. Team record shouldn't factor into MVP decisions in my opinion because a team's record is determined by all 53 guys and the coaching; not just a single player, so it's unfair to punish Rivers for the performance of the entire team and poor coaching by Norv Turner. Rivers is having a record breaking season with no name receivers, and those voting should recognize that and give him the award if he does end up breaking Marino's record regardless of whether the Chargers make the playoffs or not.

Rivers is 1st in points per game as a starter in NFL history; no other QB has led his team to more points per game than Rivers. He's also never thrown 3 interceptions in a game; and he has the record for most games without throwing 3 or more interceptions. He's on track this year to get 5,233 yards which would break Marino's record of 5,084 and he's also on track to break the record for yards per attempt as well as around a 40 TD season. Give the man credit for doing all of that with a bunch of no name receivers and without his star tight end and no help from his running back Ryan Matthews who is either injured on the sideline or fumbling when he's in.

Rivers by a mile over Brady for MVP right now.

I'm amazed at how objective Pats fans on this forum are. If I were on a Colts forum those homers would viciously insult me and ban me for suggesting that Rivers should be the lead candidate for MVP over Manning right now. They refuse to acknowledge that other QBs around the league can be better than Peyton Manning in any particular season. Even when Brady was having his record breaking season they refused to give him credit, saying that it was just because of the talent around him like Moss, neglecting to mention that Brady didn't have any great receivers his entire career before that season whereas Mannings been using Harrison and Wayne his whole career to pad his stats.

If you don't lead your team to the playoffs, you're not getting the MVP, simple as that. That's not only MY belief, but the belief of voters for over 30 years now.

That is why they have offensive/defensive player of the year awards. Anyone saying "Rivers is the MVP right now" does not understand what the award means. It is not for the best statistical performance.

And just to be clear, this has NOTHING to do with me having an anti-Chargers bias or something. I made it loud and clear that Rivers should of won the MVP in 2008. He made the playoffs, won the division, had better stats and then even BEAT Manning in a playoff game that year. That was just absolute nonsense to me that Manning won.

Manning's Colts are also not a playoff team right now so he is also not a MVP candidate if the season ended today. That's just a fact. People in this topic are criticizing the system instead of discussing if Brady is in the actual MVP race, which he is right now.

If Suh wasn't a rookie he would earn a shot at MVP for a bottom dweller

Suh is a younger version of Ngata with the quickness of Wilfork all rolled into one

Rivers earned my respect in the afccg playing with an ACL injury

IMO, MVP should always go to the most important player on the team with the best regular season record.

Well, who DO you have as the top 3 realistic MVP candidates right Now? Not who you THINK should win, but if the season ended today who do you think the top 3 players would be? Realizing that they must be on a playoff team.

There are no sure playoff teams yet

For 3 guesses as MVP are

Rivers
J. Charles (a monster 6.4 YPC so far)
Brady

I can live with that. But, if Rivers leads the Chargers to the playoffs and he breaks Marino's record than he should be the MVP. I'm mainly against the people who look at the team with the best record and then choose the best player from that team, meanwhile ignoring players on teams with poorer records who are doing much better.

I totally disagree. Should Ben Roethlisberger or another player on the Steelers have won the MVP in 2004 then since his team was 15-1? Having the best record just means that your team is overall the best team in the NFL, it doesn't mean that a certain player on that team is responsible for that record.

The Dog Whisperer himself, Mike Vick.

LOL! I would honestly rather it go to Vick if he continues to play well and leads the Eagles to the playoffs than to have it go to Peyton Manning once again. But, the person who deserves it most if his team makes the playoffs is obviously Rivers.
