Welker looks like he might play...

Re: Welker looks like he might play ...

No one surpasses Chuck Norris. :D

In all seriousness though, were the Patriots attempting to get Welker killed last night, or did they forget that last night's game was his first one back, since reconstructive surgery on his knee? How about easing the guy in, just incase his knee is still a little tender? Obviously they know better than I do, but I was a little surprised at the situations they put him in, so early in his time back.

There's no benefit to babying the guy if his knee is structurally sound.

Re: Welker looks like he might play ...

He looked really good out there last night. He got hit pretty hard and his eyes were bugging out of his head afterwards but I think that, in the end, Welker is probably very happy that the hit happened.

Absolutely was a good thing, he needed that first big hit and just get him back into playing football. I really hate that bubble screen to the WR, I am not just saying it because of the hit Welker took on it. The play just never seems to get positive yardage. Whether it's Welker, Moss or Edelman I really cant remember a time that the play would actually be called a success

That's just selective memory; you only remember the play when it gets blown up for a loss of one. But trust me, it is run plenty of time for positive yardage. Coordinators aren't *completely* stupid. ;)

Might want to take a class in probability. ;)

Bill Belicheck used that 'less than zero' chance before too. I think it was talking about trading up in a recent draft.

I think Welker needs to be brought along slowly. He's getting some token exposure in these preseason live action games, which is great for him, but if he doesn't start out the season on the PUP, I suspect he'll be worked into the offense real slow. Say 10 snaps the first couple of games, and gradually work his way so that he's back to full speed by the end of the season.

I mean heck I'd be all for the PUP just to shut him down for a while after giving him a breather, and letting us keep a few more receivers on the roster - say, a special teams contributor like Aiken or Slater that would otherwise have been cut, for at least the first part of the season while Welker slowly works himself back to 100%.

I understand he's made a lot of progress and we are all optimistic, but ACL tears are no joke. Another one could be a killer, and Welker is both young and an integral part of the offense. Any way you slice it this is a sooner than expected comeback. Nothing wrong with taking the pressure off of him for a while and give him the early part of the (long) season off, and then work him back to full speed.

I follow the Huskers in college, and they had a backup QB who tore an ACL, was rushed back optimistically (another 'miracle' recovery time to full speed), and promptly tore it again. The two injuries screwed him up pretty bad. Of course this hasn't happened to Welker yet, and the timetable on Welker is probably a little longer, but it makes me worry.

You can't go on PUP unless you didn't practice or play at all during the preseason/training camp.

Welker's recovery is uncharted territory. Welker's competitiveness is off the charts. So you end up with such compelling drama it's like a WWE/WWF storyline, and we're all nervously waiting for the next plot twist.

I hate the bubble screen when the blocking isn't great and it gets blown up for a loss. I love it when the blocking is there and it goes for a sizeable gain.

1 out of every 5 it goes for a sizable gain, more often than not it goes for a loss. It's great to get Welker or Edelman the ball and let them make a move, but there are other ways to do that

I don't understand this "Easy him in" talk. If his knee is completely healed, 100% structurally sound (which I'm assuming it is given him playing last week), then why hold him back? He needs the reps to get himself back to mid-season form.

If his knee is fully healed, the chance of him blowing it again is no greater than the chance of him blowing it in the first place (ie, the same). He's in shape and ready to go, he just needs reps.

Welker's recovery isn't uncharted territory. It's been done before and in some instances faster than Welker in other sports.
