8/15 Patriot Roster Moves

Miguel, is that Brian Simmons the OG from Oklahoma? Interesting if it is. Came out this year after a solid career and a strong pro day but went undrafted because a foot was deformed, I believe. One of his feet is a size 15 and one is a size 18, I think. I think the troubled foot grew down and in. I'm sure I have the details a little mixed up here, but if this is the kid, I recall him being a hardworking, intelligent, effective OG and I would be glad to see the kid get a shot here.

yes it's him. two club feet and bad knee.

I wasn't really expecting much from him. I had my doubts he'd make the team as many others did.

I hope he's able to rebound and continue his great career if that's indeed what he wishes to do.

On the positive note, Buddy Farnham is back.

Dante's greatest project? He has to top what he did with Neal.

I think he is 6'4" and over 310lbs. I think his knee was an injury in his senior year and maybe now he is healed. No idea about the club feet - don't even know what club feet are.

Now Holt can go have tea with Galloway at the old folks home. Thanks for nothin', tha both of yuz.

Knee surgery... my foot.

(d%#*!@t, I'm crabby. I can't take these non-football summer Sundays. They frustrate me. lol.)

We only need four position wide receivers. Price makes the roster as a developmental #5, who is likely to spend most games being inactive.

IMHO, Aiken's roster spot is a ST roster spot. Either Aiken will get it, or it will go to another special teamer like Lockett or Slater.

So, does this mean the Pats go with 5 WR's (Moss, Welker, Edelman, Tate, Price) or do they add Aiken or do they use that spot to keep BJGE and keep 5RB's, or both?

Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

That sucks. Doesn't seem like a lot of depth is left.

"Proven depth" would probably be the better way to phrase this. At least Aiken is at the back of the bus.

Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

Our starters are Moss and Welker. Edelman is "proven depth" as our #3. Aiken is a JAG who is a "proven #4". I think that we have proven starters and proven depth. As we know, a #4 is not used much at all, except when there are injuries. The tight ends and running backs are the next targets after the first three wide receivers.

Was Holt really a "proven" upgrade? We expect that either Tate or Price will be an upgrade over Aiken; most likely, both will be.

Some teams have to count on a 3rd round draft choice (or lower) as a #2 or #3. We have the luxury of having a 3rd rounder in house in the hope that is competitive for the #4 and #5 spots in his first year. Not needing any performance out of a round 3 WR is a luxury few teams enjoy. They don't ahve the depth that the patriots do.

1.) Moss

2.) Welker

3.) Tate/Holt

4.) Edelman

5.) Tate/Holt

6.) Price

There's no proven depth on the outside there with Holt gone. The notion that Aiken is a "proven" anything other than 'nonentity' as a WR is amusing, though. It is, in fact, a pair of 3rd round receivers that this team has to count on as WR3: one is in his rookie season, and the other had a lost rookie season due to injury.

I've seen footage of Tate and he looks like a solid receiver. If Tate does produce, I think we have one of the best WR corps in the league and then some potentially great and young TE's. I see it being like this:

1. Moss
2. Welker
3. Edelman
4. Tate
5. Price
6. Aiken

If Tate keeps up his TC production, our 4-Wide sets should be absolutely dominating, given the O-Line gives Brady time to step up and make a throw.

Nice story on Simmons: SoonerSports.com - Official Site of the Oklahoma Sooners

Inspirational.

Holt connection:

While Simmons was reaching his goals, he made a decision to attend Hargrave Academy, a college preparatory Christian military boarding school in Chatham, Va. A few weeks before enrolling, a chance encounter with Jacksonville Jaguars' wide receiver Torry Holt, a native of Simmons' home state of North Carolina and former Hargrave attendee, gave him some insight about the military school experience. Simmons took that with him as he entered a year of hard work and discipline.

Holt connection:

Very cool story. Nice find!

I hadn't really heard of this kid, so I pulled up some highlights of Oklahoma skill players. Sure enough, #74 stands out at LG: he's very smooth and coordinated, looks comfortable and determined in pass protection, and moves pretty fluidly to the second level. Honestly, he looks like a prototypical Patriots player. I would love for him to beat the odds and make the squad.

Definitely rooting for him. :)

I think that Edelman actually has the skillset to run the intermediate routes that would be effective opposite Moss. I would prefer to have Tate win that job (with the added dimension of going deep now and again), leaving Edelman as a backup to Welker or a second "slot" receiver in 4 WR sets, but I think he can fill that other outside role if necessary.

Of course, the fact that Edelman COULD do that doesn't make him proven, so your point still stands.

That's too bad about Holt, I've always liked him as a player. However, with Edelman possibly making a 2nd year leap, Tate improving and the rookie Price, it was going to be very difficult for Holt to make the team. In addition, I believe Hernandez is going to targeted a lot this season.

On a positive note, it's encouraging to see that the Pats are going to have 3 receivers (Welker, Edelman and Hernandez) that are going to command attention in the middle of the field. This should take a lot of attention off of Moss this season.
