OT: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

Since Washington has a second round tender, the trade is a second and a fifth. Not nearly the steal anymore. It will make McDaniels breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Brandon Marshall won't net him a 4th at best.

If it is a trade with Washington, it is a good trade for both sides since the Steelers need to beef up their running game.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

Excellent move by the Jets. A bona fide receiver talent for a 5th round pick. It makes me wonder what poison chalice is attached though. Holmes has been bought for a Superbowl run. Don't kid yourself about anything less given his pending suspension.

The Jets certainly haven't put a footy wrong since Rex got there. The guy is even trying his hand at beating Jared Fogle into being the face of Subway for the next decade.

I trust in BB, but the Jets appear to be getting a hell of a lot better very quickly. I'm not concerned in the slightest as I hope the Patriots will rise to the challenge. So much rests on Sanchez. I can handle that.

I'm getting more scared of the Jets everyday. They looked well stacked up in almost every department. I'm not liking it at all.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

the Jets virtually have every defensive player from the 2009 team returning and now they have a bonafide passing game on the other side.

No. They have a bona fide receiving game. Not sure why everyone assumes Mr. "Red Light, Green Light" will turn into a stud this year coming off 20 ints and surgery that is ruining his offseason.

The thing I don't like about the Jets team building is that it seems rushed. Maybe a fear of sliding backwards. Maybe the new stadium. Maybe the aging lines. The Jets are going all-in for 2010 considering they have some serious contract work in 2011 (Mangold, Revis opt-out, Cromartie as a 5th year, Holmes, Edwards, Washington, Harris as a 4th year, Ellis, Pool). With a likely cap and return to 4 yr FA in 2011 and the Jets with nearly $100M committed to the cap without those players, the Jets are setting up the 2011 offseason as a crossroad. I would understand that if you had Manning or Brady in the twilight but not with a young QB.

That being said, if there is no back-story behind the Holmes deal, the Steelers go fleeced. There are a handful of teams with WR as a top need. A couple of them in the NFC where Holmes wouldn't be on a team potentially standing between you and the Super Bowl. TB wouldn't give up #101 for Holmes? Carolina with #121? Crap, you couldn't even pry #124 from the Jets? Very curious.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

If the Jets find a way to trade up and grab Odrick just before the Pats get a chance, some fans in here will be on suicide watch.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

Best move the Jets have made this offseason, without a doubt. Even if Holmes has a 4 gamer coming up, he'll be able to contribute enough to make it worth the 5th rounder they gave up. I'm sure he has been brought in just as much for his ability to stretch the field and open up the run game as he has for his ability to catch passes.

Good move, but I'm not handing the Jets the Lombardi Trophy yet. I lived in Redskins-ville for too long and have seen teams win the April Bowl too often. Let's see what the draft brings and then what the season brings.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

I think the Steelers have gone up against the Pats often enough they wouldn't even consider trading him here. Whereas they may look at the Jets and see a flash in the pan. Don't forget, the Steelers saw Rexie twice a year for 10 years and may not be particularly scared by him.
I thought of the 'meet in the playoffs' angle at first for a moment too, but my thought was 'why trade him to a team you may play in the playoffs'? As for the Pats, if trading Holmes was in part a PR move, then whatever goodwill they were looking to gain would have been wiped out by trading him to the Pats. Most Steeler fans are obsessed with the Pats and hate New England with a passion. Trading Holmes to the Pats would have been worse than keeping him in terms of image and approval rating.

If I'm the Steelers and I want to trade Holmes, I look at Chicago, Arizona, Washington and Minnesota. Carolina, Tampa Bay, Miami and Tennessee would be secondary targets.

Then again who knows, maybe the Jets initiated the conversation and perhaps gave them a quick 'take it or leave it' offer. Being a final four team their options are very limited with free agency.

Does anyone know if trading for Holmes is equivalent to signing a FA? If so, then they don't have the chance to sign Jason Taylor anymore, do they?

Also, does anyone know how marijuana testing works? How long does it have to be out of your system for you to pass? Because I don't see Holmes going pot-free until week 5, and next time, it's a whole season suspension.

If he signs the tender, the Steelers would have to give the Jest a second rd pick, right? That would make this "steal" grand larceny.

It means that (HYPOTHETICALLY) when he signs the tender, he gets traded. He'd be signing the tender with the Jets, not signing an offer sheet from another team, so no 2nd round pick would be involved.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

Jets appear to be making all of the right moves. They gave third round for Cromatie (2011) and fifth round pick for Holmes (2010), it is difficult to be critical of their moves especially when the Patriots gave 3rd and 5th for Burgess for one season.

"Appear" being the operative word. Time will tell and, but right now on paper the Jets are better than the Pats. Period.

Freakin Belichick and his hording of draft picks. It makes so little since to me, (but I'm just a fan who feels like anything less than a SB every year is a disappoitment). However, he did give up picks to try to get immediate impact from players like Burgess, Baker and Smith, so I know that he and the organization haven't gone completely insane with this obsession with hording picks and trading down, usually to pick up JAGS.

Our drafts haven't gotten us anywhere the last few years (although the 2009 draft could prove to be excellent, [and even a home run if certain things go right....cough, McKenzie, Tate, cough.
He better nail it this year with all picks he has in the top 100.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

Based on talent on the roster, every year for the last five years it should have been the Cowboys and the Chargers in the Super Bowl.

Rex Ryan >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Phillips and Turner combined

Dude, STFU, you posts are loaded with sour grapes envy and spin

Depending on body fat, regularity of use and how long one has been smoking, up to a month. But for a professional athlete who does it occasionaly, it can be out of your system as early as 3-4 days.

So now Washington, coming off of a broken leg is legit 2nd round value?

No, that was the tender the Jets gave him, which would force a team to give them a 2nd round pick.

Even with Washington, it's a steal, but it does add more value for the Steelers.

Thing is, Washington is coming off of a big injury, and probably won't be fully healthy until a few games into the season.

For someone with as little body fat as Holmes, I guess that he would be clean within a month, or even 25 days, of stopping. Maybe he can give Onterrio Smith a call to see if he still has his Whizzinator, just in case.

Damn, I was liking the one month timeline ;)

How often are NFL pot tests, and are they random or scheduled? And after a 4 game suspension, will he have to do more testing or anything?

BTW, the Washington speculation is coming from the clown Florio, there are some NY bloggers that are coming out saying there is no truth to the Leon rumor.
