Re: Bills will release T.O.

Mii thoughts exactly... Can u imagine Brady throwin some balls to him... Either Moss or TO will draw double coverage (maybe both???) and havin mini wes in the middle...

Can you imagine TO dropping some very catchable balls, and then Brady ignoring him the rest of the season, and then TO pouting and becoming a locker room cancer the rest of the year? Yeah, I'm not willing to go down that road, the road called TO's path of broken teams and busted lockerrooms. NO THANKS. HELL NO TO TO!

I will say this, though, he did tone it down this past season somewhat.

This is why I'm encouraged for him to come to this team wearing a halo.
I remember seeing him at the Espy awards on TV a few years back. BB had just won an award and when he walked by T.O. to accept it, it seemed to me that T.O. looked up to him with reverence. I think he would like to play for us and I think he would wear that halo to do it, too. If just for one year at least.

If he and Moss really are friends as some one on this thread suggested then it just could happen. Although I still see egos coming to a head at some point.

Put it this way. They asked BB if Moss could play in NE, everyone was expecting coach to say something like, Hell no but all he said was "why not" and I'm guessing he takes the same disposition with TO.

If Bill can get him cheaply and rebuild other areas of the team in this draft he'll do it. I'm not sure drafting a WR's is the way to go. We can be way better next year even if we only draft OL - DL- LB. If we draft 2 of each of those and go the veteran route for WR and RB we can climb right to the top quickly.

T.O. would put as at the top of the pile on offense. Owens on the team would all but solidify our receiving corps at a one year deal. With that, we can go about addressing other needs during the draft including: OL, DE, and OLB.

I look at it like this...

  • Easily the best available free agent WR in the league
  • Can be picked up for relatively little in what could be an uncapped season
  • Has a history of behaving himself in his first year
  • Can more than likely be signed to a short-term contract
  • Is friends with Randy Moss
  • Has never had a QB the caliber of Tom Brady
  • Bill Belichick has a history of success with players like TO
  • If he were to beast, we could cash in and trade him later
  • Excellent backup #1 receiver if Moss ever goes down
  • Excellent player to help improve any rookie WRs we draft
  • Knows the AFC-East
  • Expendable

I was saying what KontradictioN is saying months ago on here... sign him.

Kontra, I understand some of your points, but I think TO can have the effect that you think he can. I exaggerated a little by calling him another Joey Galloway b/c he's obviously more refined as a WR than Galloway. Yes Romo was hurt, but even when Romo returned, TO was still having issues separating and complaining about not getting the ball (like the explosion on the sideline during the Steelers loss). Romo only missed 3 or 4 games too, so it's not like he was out for like 8 weeks.

What VJC said is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Doesn't that sound very similar to what happened with Galloway? That's more of where I was bringing in the Galloway comparison. Galloway dropped some catchable balls, couldn't get on the same page as Brady, and Brady got pretty pissed at him, which all resulted in him being de-activated and released during the season. This one-year fill the gap deal left us with a noose around our neck in terms of WR depth. Sam Aiken? Isiah Stanback? Rookie off knee surgery Brandon Tate? QB-conversion project Edelman? We were extremely lucky to have Edelman contribute the way he did. We thought Galloway could be a one year stop gap, and once he busted, we were in some trouble. When Welker went down, we were basically doomed.

That's why I'm opposed to a TO who is not only pretty damn old at 36, but has had a litany of problems in the locker room everywhere he's gone, and is a one year stop gap option at best. David Patten is obviously not the answer. I'm more interested in a longer-term investment. A guy in the 2nd round of the draft, an UFA/RFA who is still pretty young. I'd even rather have Deion Branch who has experience in our system and is still a good amount younger than TO. If you sign TO as that stop gap and address the other needs you are talking about in the draft, you're just putting a band-aid on the problem instead of trying to fix it. What happens if TO's attitude or inability to separate or inability to get the Pats offense down results in him being shown the door? Now you have Moss who is a year older, no Welker for the first half of the season with no guarantees he will ever be the same player, Edelman a very solid slot guy, and Tate who has had two knee injuries in consecutive years and hasn't proven much. It's too much of a risk that I'm not willing to take.

The key point that could make this insanity work. Owens was bigger than Jeff Garcia, Mcnabb, Romo, and Edwards. This would be the first time in his career he would be lower than his quarterback. I couldn't picture T.O biaching to Brady on the sidelines.

I can't argue with that, sign him up.

You guys wanting him, seriously wanna deal with his baggage? Pats have enough issues without bringing that circus to town. The media already camps outside BBs home just waiting for him to pass a neighbor without shaking hands. We don't need the T.O. circus :bricks:

Without a QB to blame he might commit suicide though, and I don't think we'd get a roster exemption.:bricks:

The team is already a lightning rod for criticism from the media...the last thing they need is a confirmed locker room prima donna.

No thank you, there are more veterans out there for them to try.

With the exception of Buffalo, everywhere TO has gone, the residual effect of his presence has been a fractured locker room.

No question he plays hard but the baggage just isn't worth it IMO.

His media circus days are over at this point. He's not a fool - he knows he would be second (and third when and if Welker comes back) fiddle in NE and I don't think you would hear much from him. If he's cheap and healthy, he could be a nice 1-2 year pickup.

Not sure if TO fits in NE but, at this stage, the Pats are desperate for a top WR and, if BB feels TO can help, I'm all for it.

Hogwash. He is a fool - which is why he landed in Buffalo last season - and he's never been second or third fiddle anywhere and accepted it. He and Randy aren't "friends", they are thin-skinned peers and in fact they are direct competitors for a lot of post career laurels... Whichever one found himself on the short end of the receptions or TD's or $$ stick here would be liable to develop malcontentment disorder. And while Randy isn't terribly media savvy, at least he tends to avoid them in season. TO can't not comment because public venting and hogging the spotlight is in his DNA. TO has never been asked to perform in a sight adjusted offense like this one. He struggles whenever he isn't targeted. I don't want Brady wasting another entire off season trying to motivate or placate a fading star. I want him building towards continuity that has an opportunity to pay dividends over the next 4-5 seasons...
