McGowan or Chung 3rd safety?

Does anyone remember when Merriweather didn't look so promising early in the 2007 season? - Looks like he caught on and just like Brandon did, I expect Chung to take a while to acclimate himself to the big leagues - If he still hasn't learned the system in a year or two then we can be worried about the Safety position.

In cover two not likely. Zo was talking about that this AM. He's going to be playing up with Sanders and Merriweather covering. I'm sure they want to see him develop better instincts so he can cover in a pinch, but he's not generally going to be going up against teams best WR's. They got this kid to be a big hitter.

When you have 4-3-4 or 3-4-4 and the opponent cracks out a 3rd wide receiver, Chung either had better be able to cover or had better start applying to UPS for a new job.

McGowen for now, he has four years of experiance. If he doesn't cut it then switch to Chung.

You might have a clue if you knew what you were looking at... They were gauging Chung in a role he will likely never fill. BB does stuff like this in pre season so he will know what a guy can be used for in the crunch. Chung is a big hitter and he will be playing a very different role starting next week. When all the starters are playing...

Well he failed big time. In the crunch when someone is required to come off the bench to play in coverage perhaps they should look at the ball boy.

No one is saying he can't get better, surprised how bad he was though considering the pick we used on him.

Damn was Chung that bad last night?

He was made to look bad on the camera. Now look at the plays. He was "picked" by the WR on the first TD. On the second he was playing nickle and poor Matt Slater was suppose to help over the top but he didn't.

So, I give Chung a C for his pre-season but not as bad as others here think he is. I look for him to contribute on ST's but not as a punt returner. He will progress well as the season moves along.

Oh and BTW, McGowen stays.

Well Brandon was a FIRST round pick,Chung was a second

I remember fans here saying Brandon couldn't catch an INT if he had super glue attached to them,Well in time he changed that and has become pretty good at it,so lets give Chung a little time before we panic.

What about the fact he had two game-changing plays?

Game one when he blocked the kick and harried another into a miss (which preserved the lead), and the last game when he had a key 33 yard punt return that put us into FG range?

He'll learn. Also, while he sucked last night and has struggled in coverage during the exhibition, some of it was just technique, which can be corrected with reps, and some of it was a lack of experience (avoiding the pick).

I watched the first td he gave up and it looks like he was picked, he probably would of been in tighter coverage had he been free to turn n run with the receiver.

While their skills are totally different, I do think that the comparison's apt. Anyone who's expecting Chung to step in and be a major player on defense right away is, IMO, going to be disappointed. I think it's far more likely that he gets a lot of ST duty this season, with some rotational play at safety, maybe, in the second half of the season. Some people will call him a bust for it, just like they did with Meriweather, but they'll be proven wrong (as always) by common sense, perspective, and a little bit of time.

Like I said in my last post to you no one is saying Chung will not get better.

He will not be a "Mayo" type pick in his first 2 years however.

McGowan; not close at all.

I know many people had Chung ready to overtake James Sanders as starting safety. I think that talk is over.

I'm not sure I've ever seen Sanders covering slot receivers 1-1 with no help over the top. If he did, the result surely would be every bit as ugly. I'm still hoping that by mid-season Chung is putting a big dent into Sanders' PT.

I think we all learned from BB's mistake. He used a 3rd rd draft pick on a raw qb, developed him for a yr, and the kid came back, played like ****, and got released. Total waste of a roster spot, and he should have been let go last yr. for a much better developmental prospect. So, with that being said, let's all hope BB learned from his mistakes, and see's how limited this rookie safety that plays like total garbage really is and cuts him loose asap. We could use the free cap space and roster spot after all.

Seriously guys??? The kid is a ******* rookie. 2nd rd. pick or not. Give him at least half a season to get acclimated with the pro game before some of you start charging him with flaming torches. I swear man, some of the posters on this board act like absolute spoiled little ****s! Mayo's don't come every yr. ppl. That's what makes them so special...they are RARE!! :bricks:

Chung will never have to cover anyone on defense?

In terms of man-to-man, on an island like last night, Chung will likely cover guys in the slot. Do you seriously not believe that part of BB isolating him on a guy like Sinorice Moss wasn't another example of Belichick testing a guy's weaknesses in a game that doesn't count? How many times does he have to do this EVERY YEAR in the pre-season before we don't go off wildly speculating about how crappy a player someone is?

No one is actually suggesting - or intended to - that Chung WILL NEVER COVER ANYBODY. It's simply that the role he was put in last night was clearly, OBVIOUSLY not the role he will typically play. Does he need work on his coverage skills - YES. But we knew that coming in. In terms of other aspects of his game, Chung has looked up and down, but not nearly as "down" as you seem to suggest.

Let's line Rodney up against Sinorice Moss running fly patterns down the field and see how he does, and not just when he was older. Geez.

THANK YOU for being sane.

Chung has been decent at safety this preseason. He was playing different positions last night including nickel as a try out for his versatility. Obviously he failed that test.
He did not shine as a inside nickle back. Hopefully experiment over and back to Safety.

If Meriweather or Sanders were injured, who would you expect to start at in their place? That is the question being asked. I beleive the answer is clearly McGowan as of now. What do you believe?

I know many people had Chung ready to overtake James Sanders as starting safety. I think that talk is over. My question is, although Chung is certainly the future, if one of our starting safeties goes down in week one, who is your pick to replace him, Chung or McGowan?

Why would the talk be over? We all understand that #36 cannot cover. Chung wasn't playing Safety. Why Chung was playing nickle inside was beyond me? What was that experiment? I was not impressed. #36 would not have been one bit better. I will vote for #36 doing worse although how? Lets line up #36 one on one with a WR and see what happens. Chung did get a smidge better in the second half.

McGowan has had some moments. Right now I hope BB is combing the cuts for some Safety help or we are in trouble with only Merriweather as a starting type NFL talent until this kids picks it up. They did put a claim in on a Safety last week but someone else was awarded. All you who think we are set a Safety opposite Merriweather, I don't think so.

Another Safety will be brought in this week. Ray V.will not be a Safety and Slater PUP?
