Re: Donte Stallworth may get cut today. Would you take him back?

I hear Ben Coates and Marion Butts also want to come back into football, anyone think they'd be awesome pick ups for the Pats? Gosh, this stuff is madness. I still do not understand why every single time one player is cut from a team, we always need to do a "Hey, Bin Laden just got cut from Al Qaeda, any interest?" in him type threads or polls.

What part of PATSFANS.COM MESSAGE BOARD don't you understand?

Wow, the only word that comes to mind .... slow !

What part of PATSFANS.COM MESSAGE BOARD don't you understand?
The "Board" part has always confused me a little.

And to the original question... I'd rather have Gaff back, but oh well.

Re: Donte Stallworth may get cut today. Would you take him back?

You mean the guy that lost his job to Gafney?

Re: Donte Stallworth may get cut today. Would you take him back?

I think at this point, Stallworth is what he is in the Pats system, which is a mediocre WR. There are probably cheaper alternatives (e.g. Greg Lewis) the Pats can pick up who at least have some upside.

But I'm not the Pats FO. Maybe they really wanted him back but just couldn't spend that kind of money at the WR position. I'd give that about a 5-10% chance, and its another 50/50 whether another team will pay him good money after so many subsequent releases.

Re: Donte Stallworth may get cut today. Would you take him back?

This is probably a stupid question to most, but....

What exactly happens with a players contract when he is cut? In the original post it said Stallworth is owed 4.75 million in bonuses. Is that all the Browns are on the hook for on his remaining contracts? If someone is cut how much of their contract does the team have to pay out, if any?

They only "owe" that amount that was guaranteed.

Signing bonus already paid out is the players to keep. Salary as a rule is not guaranteed and must be earned (although a veteran with more that 4 years earns all of his if he is on the roster week 1). Ditto future roster or option bonuses. Although recently more deals are written with portions of future salary or option or roster bonuses guaranteed, and if that's the case then those remain owed.

It's a good question, but the answer is tough. It all depends on the player's original contract. Derek Anderson is owed a bonus regardless of whether he gets cut or not. Stallworth's bonus is nullified if he is cut by 4pm (as I understand the situation). There will still be a cap hit, but it eliminates a chunk, and they're ina tight spot right now where they need to make space any way they can, even in bits and pieces.

As a result of bad management in Cleveland, Donte may become a cap casualty early this afternoon.

Would you take him back on the cheap to compete for the #3 spot again?

I said "yip":

A tenure in Cleveland and now have THE Manjudas who made 2007 so... interesting as his boss, Stallworth may like the look of the grass in Foxborough. If he was cheap enough, I'd bring him in.

In a WR hungry league, though something tells me the Jets will be charging after him if he comes loose.

I thought this guy had a problem running routes in the Pats' system? And that that was one of the prime reasons they lost interest in him.

Or am I thinking of someone else???

It's possible you're thinking of Chad Jackson, too.

I think Stallworth was ok, just not making a case for his payday. It was smart to phase him out early on so non-renewal didn't seem like a big deal.

I think he lost his job to Gaffney based on value, more than anything. It should be noted that we now have neither one.

I'm still thinking drafting a WR high-ish as an experiment would be ok, especially this year with all the day-one picks we have (so far).

Re: Donte Stallworth may get cut today. Would you take him back?

Bin Laden - Probable (shoulder)

Re: Donte Stallworth may get cut today. Would you take him back?

Maybe.

Meaning: try to get Holt first... and only sign Stallworth if he's around or under $1M.

Re: Donte Stallworth may get cut today. Would you take him back?

I would definitely take him back, unfortunately, I don't think he would want to come back.

Re: Donte Stallworth may get cut today. Would you take him back?

I'd take him back in a heartbeat.

Re: Donte Stallworth may get cut today. Would you take him back?

So Stallworth has been cut or not had his option picked up by four seperate teams in four years now if I recall his history correctly. Well, a player that popular is a must sign.

Re: Donte Stallworth may get cut today. Would you take him back?

I agree. It's absolute madness to ask if we should re-sign one of the WRs Brady was throwing to when he passed for 50 TDs two years ago. Mandess! WTF are some people thinking? Why would we want to do that?

That's not my point. The "madness" is that every single player who is cut or is a free agent is immediately a target. Look, I want the Patriots to get better, I do. But I think it's a bit crazy that everytime someone gets cut, whether it be a Donte Stallworth or a Banta Cain, there is immediately a "lets sign him thread"...It isn't so much the prospect of having Stallworth back but rather how many times people jump the gun. We got our guy in Greg Lewis, why do we need a guy who underachieved in 2007, did nothing in 2008, and then bring him back here to compete in the SAME offense with the SAME players he did NOTHING with in 2007? Especially since we have Greg Lewis...Just don't see the infatuation here. But I criticized a post so I guess that makes me a bad guy...

Re: Donte Stallworth may get cut today. Would you take him back?

I say he is definitely worth a look. You can't have too much competition at this position.

Last year the unthinkable happened when Brady was injured for the year, it would be terrible to lose either Moss or Welker for extended periods with no backup plan.

Everytime a player is cut the patriots front office has the same discussions as we do.

LOL. Well said.

And having said that...if the price were right, yeah, I'd probably consider bringing him back. But I doubt that price will be right. Does he provide a huge upgrade over Lewis? Is his experience here that valuable? He was surpassed by Jab.

Personally, Stallworth didn't live up to expectations at all in his time here, and if he had been a more capable receiver, the offense would've been that much more deadly. But he was not the deep threat he was advertised to be, and obviously was not as consistent a route runner as Gaffney.

Re: Donte Stallworth may get cut today. Would you take him back?

I dont know about getting him back. I mean if it were Gaffney I'd take him back. But then again Gaffney was the one who took his job late in 2007 season.
