WEEI.com's Great Debate: Keep or Trade Cassel?

Great stuff Chris - I'm firmly on your side of the debate here.

This part resonates:

You mention the Colts as a team that hasn't had salary cap issues. The reason Indianapolis doesn't run into problems is because they paid Peyton $11.5 million last year (that, of course, doesn't take into account his endorsement deals, which total roughly $88 skadillion) and then paid backup Jim Sorgi $1.635 million. Pittsburgh backup Byron Leftwich made $645,000 this past season. David Carr backed up Eli Manning this year, and he made $1.5 million.

These are rational salary structures. If Brady gets hurt again, well, that's part of life in the NFL. You play the hand you've been dealt. But that doesn't mean you have to overpay just because you think your quarterback might get hurt.

The Great Debate? lol Getting a 1st round pick for a guy who never started a game in college or just letting him ride the bench? Hmmm tough call! :singing:

Hey guys -- here's today's entry. Now that he's been franchised, Alex Speier and I go back and forth about whether or not the Patriots should keep or deal Cassel. Feel free to vote at the end of the story.

What should the Patriots do with Matt Cassel?

Chris - Good stuff and thanks.

Now, in a somewhat unrelated note, would you mind going over to Kerry J. Byrne cubicle and kick him in the nuts for me and most of the other folks on this board for writing this god awful nonsense?

WEEI 850AM Sports Radio - An open letter to Bill Belichick

Thanks!

I laughed at the article. Good stuff.

And Batman is the clear winner. Little bit o' Kryptonite suntan lotion and a solid kick in the junk and Supes is down the pooper.

Great stuff!! I will just keep this article for the next thread that comes up to keep the 14.5 million dollar QB. The main thing is he deserves to be the man and start somewhere which he will do next offseason.

I am going on record to say Matt Cassell could be a bigger off season pickup then Michael Turner last season. (This one could come back and really kick me in the ass).

Your comment on the Olsen twins made me laugh out loud at the office....but it was worth it.

Hmmmm.... 89% to 11% ?

Looks to me like it was Alex that got "Speier-ed" :D Nice job Chris.

And how about the live radio version! I just turned on WEEI for the first time in months. Three guys are arguing about whether the Patriots will trade Cassel. One is saying BB won't WANT any extra 1st-round picks because any 1st-round draft pick will cost just as much as Cassel at $14 million/year. The other two said he's being ridiculous...that of course 1st-round picks do cost that much, but they're worth it because they won't just be backup quarterbacks.

:scream:

OK, I've learned my lesson; I'll be sticking to the website from now on.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this mentioned, but I recall the year Quinn was drafted and slide down the first round, someone asked BB if he would have taken Quinn had he been on the board simply from a value POV; BB responded by saying he wouldn't because it makes no sense to tie that much money into the QB position when only one of them can play at a time.

So he has pretty much already tipped his hand on his philosophy of high-priced backup QBs.

(Of course, this was with a healthy Brady at QB ...)
