Jimmy Garoppolo may have escaped suffering a fracture after the hit he took from Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso, which knocked him out of Sunday’s game, but it sounds like the blow may be enough to cost him any more time on the field this season unless someone else knocks Tom Brady out when the veteran returns in three weeks.

According to the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe, Garoppolo is expected to miss Thursday night’s game against the Texans due to the injury, and possibly longer since the injury was to his throwing shoulder and could take up to six weeks to heal.

It’s a disappointing end to what had been a great run by Garoppolo, who played well again on Sunday.  The quarterback completed 18-of-27 for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns through 10-minutes of the second quarter and had the offense clicking on all cylinders before Alonso’s hit ended his afternoon.

It’s a tough break for a team that is no stranger to having to overcome adversity.  For now, it looks like Bill Belichick has to prepare yet another quarterback for their first NFL start, with Jacoby Brissett the likely candidate for Thursday night’s game.

“We’ll just take it day-to-day,” said Belichick after the game.
