I'm wondering what Belichick has up his sleeve for depth and future replacement of Rodney Harrison. this years SS class was rather weak so Belichick either has his eye on a future FA, Sanders will be bulking up even more, salary cut from another team, or next years draft class.

Which do you think it is?

The way he hit last year ... I'm thinking Sanders will be the guy.
Perhaps this was in a thread I missed .. if so let the thread slide.
A look at the SS class and there were only a few bigger than Sanders is now.
He might have went with a slighter OLB ... but he didn't.

I would like to add I am very pleased with the draft ...
All our guys were among the fastest at their position ... even O'Connel

Re: My Only Question Re: Draft ... Why No SS Pick?

I've said this before in another thread but I think we should have drafted
Joshua Barrett anywhere between our 4th and 6th round pick.

    6'1 3/4, 223 Lbs, 4.34 40

    Per ESPN INsider:

Also his injury concerns seem minor, he missed 2 games in 4 seasons. (That's an improvement for half the patriots defense)

I'd think Tank has some interesting potential there if he can stay healthy, either that or nobody saw any value at SS where we picked in this draft...or a little of both.

Tank certainly offers depth and a bridge to the next guy.
I have to stop myself ... I already want to know what they're thinking
    for the 2009 draft ... the extra 2nd which would enable a higher 1st .... :p:p:p:D

LOL - we'll see, Tank is still an X factor to a degree, but the presence of Meriweather, the option of Law, and Tank all suggest we have a good shot at keeping talent on the field in the defensive backfield even with rotation and potential injuries as long as it doesn't get too crazy back there.

Re: My Only Question Re: Draft ... Why No SS Pick?

Belichick picks talent over need, which he made very clear in his press conf today. Even if he thought that safety was a need, (which, with Rodney, Tank, Merriweather, and Sanders, he may well not have) that doesn't mean that he was going to draft one just to draft him. Next year, if a great safety falls into his lap at some point in the draft, he'll probably take the guy.

Re: My Only Question Re: Draft ... Why No SS Pick?

I used to think that ... I think he wants the league to think that. But I think it's a combination of talent / need / salary structure all at the same time now. Granted more talent than need but need & salary structure are a weighted factor in each round ... with salary stucture perhaps as important.

    i think i know....

our SS has to be a complete playmaker in our scheme...a lot depends on the SS....

when we draft a SS to replace harrison (and if sanders isnt ideal) u can bet the SS will be taken high in the draft

    Sanders? Not James right?
Please! By the way 5"10" and 203 lbs that Sanders really is is not the Bob Sanders in Indy.

Re: My Only Question Re: Draft ... Why No SS Pick?

Our future starters at safety are Meriweather at FS and Sanders at SS. We have Harrison and Williams. Why would we need another draftee? We also have Andrews and Ventrone.

September is several months away. Trades or FA is still a way to go.

Look, we all know you disagree with all of us and the team with regard to Sanders. In case someone here doesn't know how you fee, why not just put your feelings about Sanders in your signature, so you don't have to keep posting the same opinion in thread after thread. It would save you typing time.

Re: My Only Question Re: Draft ... Why No SS Pick?

Obviously, the '08 draft was first and foremost about filling needs at LB and CB, and as someone else mentioned, the talent level at SS wasn't the greatest. I think this is essentially why they added Tank even though I don't think he's guaranteed a roster spot. When Rodney's one year older and slower at this time next year and his contract with the Pats has expired, Nic Harris will be in the draft and Rolle and Mays could enter early.

There are also solid offensive and defensive tackles who could be drafted in day 1 to either upgrade the Pats' OLine or serve as insurance in case Wilfork or Sey or Jarvis depart via FAcy following the '09 season.

Doesnt speak well of last years first round pick if a year later people are still asking where our safety depth is. To that end, this is one area where Belioli have NOT drafted well over the years. Sanders may be the exception in terms of value but thinking thru the names....Guss Scott, Dexter Reid come immediately to mind. But Wilson flamed out with few overall contributions. What is it about drafting safeties that we always come up a bit short?

And Merriweather has got to be a question mark going into the season as he's barely been noticed after a full season, although he's made ST contributions. I stand by my original sentiments- Brandon = Bust.

You already answered your own question. The safeties in this year's draft suck. It's not like last year when you had 4 safeties going in the first and you could still pick up a stud like a Weddle in the 2nd. Oh btw, technically, I believe that Slater can play safety in addition to be a special teamer.

It seems the coaching staff holds Sanders in higher esteem than do some on this board.

Which is why, as the season wore on, Meriweather received more and more playing time (right up to and including the Super Bowl). Because he's a bust. Spot-on analysis.
