So now we have had the dress rehearsal. Time to take a close look.
Butler had his worst game of the preseason but is still the #1. He will have growing pains but by the end of the year should be all set.
One interesting thing Manx pointed out is Brown played outside #2 CB when only 2 CBs were on the field opposite Butler. When 3 were on the field (in that case it was Fletcher) he slide into the slot. This was consistent in the first 10 plays of the game.
It appears Brown has truly locked down the #2 CB spot and will be on the field regardless of formation.
The #3 spot is still up in the air Between Fletcher/Ryan/McClain. Personally I would go with Fletcher. He to me has been the most consistent of the 3 and his start as the 3rd CB tonight shows he has the edge IMO.
Ryan actually had his best game of the preseason and was very solid all around. I know most people on here are not Ryan fans at this point but it is worth acknowledging he did well tonight. McClain was the worst DB i saw on the field tonight as Swanson outplayed him tonight. I don't think Swanson makes the team but he looks like a PS candidate for sure.
Safety became pretty interesting tonight imo. McCourty is the clear lock at FS but if i was to throw out my starting line up right now I would probably more likely than not put Richards beside him. He showed a few bad things but when he shows up he shows up and his mistakes are few and will lessen. Right now i personally have him ahead of Chung as a run stopper and Harmon and a pass defender. I don't see a reason to take him off the field frankly. This is a pick no one really liked at the time including me but if it was take him at that spot or don't get him at all I would probably take him there judging by how he played.
Chung was Chung. Some good things and some bad things and some getting passed on and beat by a TE. He is what he is and does his job fairly well. I think he is a good option to mix still if you want to go heavy in your DBs and his coverage is often competitive and takes a good throw to beat him. Harmon had a much better game than last game. He did allow a few completions but was in the face of WRs and did not allow any over the top plays.
Wilson/Ebner is a coin toss. Ebner was on STs tonight and did some good things. He also played DB and frankly did no worse than what Wilson would do probably. I see them as 2 core STs you don't want on the field if you can help it. It is worth noting Wilson makes more than Ebner. Might decide things unless the coaches feel there is a clear difference.
