Jerod Mayo at AFC Coaches Breakfast

I wonder how the orange juice was?
Yeah, he had an accident and spilled it on his lap. I'll give him credit, he didn't miss a beat. I would have been mortified having it happen in front of all those people. I'd only ever order water after seeing that happen. ;)

It’s funny seeing guys like Curran say, “they need to build their team like the 49ers and then take a QB”. Yeah sure, it’s very easy to get the best set of weapons in football and an elite left tackle. Anyone can do it!
The 49ers started the rebuild of their team by trading for Garoppolo. So it’s not even true that they built the roster first

And then sold the farm for Trey Lance and failed. They got lucky that Purdy turned into something, but that wasn't their plan.

I think where you look to the 49ers for inspiration is in how they evaluate talent (outside of QB) that fits their scheme, as they've been very successful doing that. But their general team building philosophy is kind of all over the place IMO.

I don’t think it is. It is pretty standard to me.

They took a QB 1st, built the roster around him (with much better overall draft success than others) when they realize, after they built the roster, that the QB they selected wasn’t good enough they tried to get a new one.

Thought I would start a thread.

Some of the highlights from my POV:

- Says there are "5 or 6" QBs in this draft who can be their QB of the future, but no indication of who they are
- Talks about trading down quite a few times; at one point says "the guaranteed way to win is the get more picks"
name me one draft with 5 or 6 qbs of the future

reaction after reading this interview

- Talked a lot about Drake Maye when asked - said he has a high ceiling, but then also seems to imply he has a low floor
- Still working trade market, there will be guys who come available at the draft and after the draft that they may target
- Seemed to imply Okorafor is currently the starting LT if no one else was acquired, but the draft has not happened yet, etc
- Showed awareness of the NFLPA report card and said they have a team built that is targeting fixes to areas with low scores
- Highlighted belief in development of drafted QB and his staff's ability to do so, and how it did not go well in that area for Mac in '22

But they only traded a 2nd rounder for that QB (Jimmy) - it's not like they spent a high pick on him or sold the farm. Obviously they thought he could be good, but I'd hardly call a 2nd rounder trade as them taking the QB whom they intended to build a roster around. They got him and then found that he was indeed good. By this logic, NE can trade down and take their own QB in the 2nd round and do the same (build around him). And if he ain't all that, and is just good but not great, they can sell the farm a few years later for a big upgrade (like SF did for Trey Lance, which didn't work out).

It is noteworthy that Mayo had a ton to say about Maye and how "there's no ceiling on a guy like that" (even if he did acknowledge that he needs to develop), but then when asked about Jayden Daniels, his response was "Yeah, I had a Zoom with him, I met him" and then changed the subject to talk about traveling to pro days.

I wonder if maybe Jayden is actually their guy and they're trying to hide it... and if he goes at #2 then they're trading down.

Building off my last point, if Washington knows NE likes Daniels, then that would also lead to why there's a lot of leaks about them liking Daniels, even though supposedly Adam Peters loves Maye, and they traded Howell because Maye & Howell were best friends. They could be trying to press NE to trade up 1 pick slot to get their guy.

It’s a game of cat and mouse either way

Every team in every round is open to a trade down. Did anyone really expect him to come out and be like no no no trading down isn’t an option?

I suspect their evaluation/ranking of possible qb picks is largely (though not entirely) complete. The action - such decision making as remains to be done - now revolves around what sorts of offers they might get for the #3 pick. Those offers will come as and when they come, and not before. All they can do now is to express a willingness to ****er, which Mayo did clearly yesterday. The fact the team acquired basically squat in pre-draft trades/free agency probably makes it more likely they will trade down to fill the still-unfilled gaps via draft this year or next. I say this because it seems from Mayo's remarks - as it has seemed to any objective observer for some time - that the team realizes this is not to be anything remotely close to a One-year Wonder rebuild. And that means those prone to weeping and wailing over the allegedly slow pace of things will continue to test our patience for some time longer. So it goes. They'll get over it.

If they believe Jayden Daniels will be on the board, I think they take him. I have a feeling they are not sold on Drake Maye and would be more inclined to trade down if it was he who was available.
