Jerod Mayo at AFC Coaches Breakfast

Question: "Do you have a sense at what Washington will do at 2?"

Mayo: "Honestly, we have no clue, I don't think anyone in here really knows exactly what Washington is gonna do. I think everyone knows what Chicago is gonna do at 1, but the rest of it honestly is up in the air. And when you see these other teams making moves, you know, acquiring pieces to move, we can sit here and say Washington today, but that could be somebody else on draft day. But I don't want to speculate on that."

Seemed like an odd comment. Hinting that Minnesota acquired picks to trade up with them on draft day?

I'm not judging Ivan: stranger things have happened.

Sure seems like judging to me, as you would rather have more picks than a very good QB prospect. I’m the exact opposite, I would rather have a franchise quarterback than a couple more picks.

If the polling here is any indication then more than 80% of Patriot fans are not going to be happy if they pass on the QB at 3, and I am definitely in that category.

Wolf is going to make a certain group happy whether it's the Take the QB @ 3 group or Trade #3 get a haul group I'm leaning heavily towards the latter. We have too many Needs at critical positions.

That means you are in the “ give up 3 first round picks to go up and get a quarterback next year, or the year after” camp. I guess your tolerance for them sucking is much higher than mine.

You can fill those needs all you want, but they are still going to suck until they find a real quarterback.

Ivan I totally understand where you're coming from but what have we seen to have competitive Teams get Rookies on Five year contracts. If this Draft wasn't so Deep I would understand. Getting Two Guys from this Draft is good getting Three with 34 would be Great.

I can't stress enough that I truly hope that I'm wrong (and will happily admit it if I am) but, Mayo as HC and all other things considered, is setting this team up to be a complete and total Fluster-Cluck (worse than it already is).

What does that matter when you will then have to give up 3 first round picks and more, plus wait a couple more years after that to become good? They will not be a good team until they get a really good quarterback, period. So they can stockpile all the good players you want them to, but it won’t matter, because they will still suck, just like every team with a bad Quarterback sucks. So even if they come out of this draft with a good tackle, and a good WR it won’t matter to me one bit, because they will still be one of the loser teams in the NFL, and it will remain that way until the fix that issue.

It’s funny seeing guys like Curran say, “they need to build their team like the 49ers and then take a QB”. Yeah sure, it’s very easy to get the best set of weapons in football and an elite left tackle. Anyone can do it!

This trading back to fill more needs is a shortsighted view on this rebuild. Have a chance at a possible franchise changing QB. Take him now. Instead we want to trade back and wind up with a tier 2, let’s just try to make it to the playoffs, QB. We’re not winning in 2024, take the shot at the franchise guy.

So you are betting on a strange thing to happen?

Strange things happen every draft so that would be a fairly safe bet. Unless you're betting with Triumph. He's a known & proven welcher so no bet is 'safe' with his sorry ass.

Agree, but does Wolf and Van Pelt believe any of these guys stand out more than others.
I gotta say the Mayo full transparency borderline let me show you my draft board isn’t something I am used to.
However if he learned anything from Bill it was the quick gloss over on Daniel’s.
I think they are hoping Daniel’s is there at 3.
Why would we let a team like Denver, or Minnesota take our chance at a franchise QB away when it’s right here.

I also think that they may like Michael Pennix or Bo Nix more than we think they do.
Maybe it’s the extra years of football.

However basically saying you’re desperate to sell this pick isn’t going to net us what a top 3 pick should.

I’m starting to prepare for disappointment.

I’m thinking if other teams are bending over backwards to get up to 2 or 3 to draft one of these guys, yes, they stand out more than Penix or Nix. Just my opinion here obviously.

Also, those saying if you take a swing and miss on #3 it sets us back years and years. If your afraid to swing for a franchise changing QB now at #3 during an obvious rebuild, you never will take that chance. We will always be in the middle. Drafting Penix or Nix will get you about the same results as Brissett. 8-10 win range with some postseason appearances. Likely knocked out immediately. Tom Brady was an exception, not the rule. I’d rather take a shot at game changer now.

I wonder how the orange juice was?
