The best-case scenario(s) for Bailey Zappe

If Mac Jones gets "Mo Lewised", Zappe might get a chance to show us that "best case" scenario.
It might take four years and another team, but eventually we'll see how good or bad Zappe is.

QB's have a really long shelf life and can emerge as useful players years down the road. Look at the trajectory of Steve Young's career for example.

Zappe is making the 53 man squad. And yes, the question is whether Hoyer is worth a roster spot. The ap hit is somewhat irrelevant if he is worth less than another player who would be on the 53 instead (e.g. a 5th WR)
Because Hoyer's salary for next year is mostly guaranteed ($1.4M out of $1.6M), it would cost them more this year to cut him than to keep him.

And note a "player/coach" has his coaching salary count against the cap, too.

Since we're in the doldrums of the offseason, let me ask this two-part question. I admit that they may have the same answer, but they probably don't.
  • What is the best-case scenario for Zappe's development, as far as Zappe himself is concerned? Does he start? If so, when? Does he finish his contract?
  • And what's the best-case for Zappe's development as far as the Patriots are concerned, given that they have Mac Jones?
I'm hoping Zappe have a Russel Wilson type Preseason that make the Coaches do this:oops: and that:eek: in disbelief. :)

If you've read the draft forum you seen me talk about Zappe a little bit the past few years as a PTP. I think he has a chance to start If some things fall his way and he has a little luck. Think he's a lot like Mac believe it or not. Little redundancy at the QB spot isn't a bad thing. One of my favorite picks this year. Best case is he's a starting caliber QB and we have a "good problem" in a year or two. It's always tough to break through as a bu QB but he'll have plenty on his plate to show what he's made. I'm a fan.

So I think I tried to post a thread here and I must have ditched it -- or a mod thought it was too stupid. I am not sure, Watching TV, posting, I might have just screwed up and failed to post.

But basically it is fine that I failed, since this is here already, and basically just needs updating, to wit...

Zappe seems to be outperforming Mac10 the last few days. THey Say Mac's elbow is messed up... but apparently in the scrimmage-style practice, Zappe was looking good with the 2s against the 1s.

But... Nahhh. I mean, we've got our QB of the future, right? Right?

But it will be nice if he were to become a capable no. 2 in short order, and also to push Mac to do his best... We are so used to the old bulletproof brady days... what we do know is that Mac looks like he's the reall deal. What we don't remember is how often you can get a few games on the field as a backup QB, if Brady's not the top guy. I won't look forward to the opportunity to see him, because it would mean someone is injured... but it's not like "game over" if we're in that position

WTF you talking about? “They” are not saying that, unless Stafford’s new nickname is Mac Jones.

It wasn’t a scrimmage. It was essentially a fast-paced walk-through. Zappe looks promising but it is foolish to try to gleen anything from the in-stadium practice and to start questioning Mac at this point in the install of a new system is also foolish. If the 1st team offense is still struggling mighty three weeks from now that is a different story.

Oy vey.

Finally, you nailed one. Good job.

If Mac gets Mo Lewised we're probably picking in the top 5 in April.
It's interesting that we won 7 with Cam Newton throwing the ball at the dirt, and ended up drafting 15th.

Granted, Hoyer could not beat out Newton, but still, four wins or less is about where you need to be for a top-5 draft pick.

Hopefully we never find out what that's like...

I don’t really care who the QB is, as long as he’s a winner. If Zap’s best case scenario is that he somehow gets some starts under his belt, and takes over the starting job, then great! That would mean BB thinks he can perform better than Mac. Having 2 young, NFL starter caliber players on the roster, locked up long term on the cheap would be an amazing dilemma to have. As long as it doesn’t **** with the locker room.

Realistically, I would love it if he performs well in preseason, looks good in some mop up duty, and spends all season getting better. Team would save quite a bit of money to not have to re-sign Hoyer again next year.

One advantage Zeppe has going for him is NO hype. Very few "experts" think he can be successful, many do not think he can even be a serviceable backup. When the bar is set so low...it takes pressure off and allows time and room to grow.

TB12 had that advantage also when he came into the league he had no hype and expectations were low.

By contrast, Mac has so much pressure on him. Perhaps overhyped a bit and just by virtue of where he was picked is now thrust in the position of being the "franchise savior" and the GOAT successor. That is a boatload of pressure.

Triggered much!

Sorry, rather than "they say his elbow is messed up," we'll state the fact: He's performing less well in camp than Zappe the last few days and he's wearing a compression sleave. Or have I been misled? I wasn't there watching, hence phrases like "they say."

When I say a "scrimmage-style practice" you don't get points for "correcting" me and saying "it wasn't a scrimmage." That said, yeah, you can only tell so much from it if it IS officially described as a scrimmage.

This was whatever it was, and in it -- per reports, matching the last few days of practices -- Zappe's been looking better than Mac.

What did I just tell you?

But... Nahhh. I mean, we've got our QB of the future, right? Right?

Oy vey indeed, at least respond to what I'm saying.

But what the hell, screw the receiver conversation, Sunday Monday, Zappe Days, Tuesday Wednesday, Zappe Days... Zappe Days are here again... forget your troubles, come on, get Zappe...

You know what, screw it, the bandwagon is rolling for a full on QB controversy! That's right, you're just lookin' for something to be triggered about, here you go!

The Zappe Controversy starts right here, right now.

It would be a horrific waste of rebuilt receiving talent but that said, where else are we deep? Running back. Yay. No, those Top 5 spots are usually scooped up by something with 9 miles of excrement above them before you get to "OMG we didn't go to the playoffs!!!" teams.

Foxborough flu

PatsGoFor4, trigger warning. You might want to medicate before reading any farther…

another factor might be if Bill is using the same coaching approach he used with TB12. Mac might be reacting to hearing about how Johnny from Foxboro High could do better by looking over his shoulder and seeing Zappe doing well enough to worry about being replaced. Adding that pressure to the scheme change and maybe some physical issues if the compression sleeve was really needed could be eroding his confidence.

Rides the bench around the league for 10 years and then sells insurance, cars or real estate.

I’m just happy to have not one, but two great QB prospects on the roster.
