[Old 2020 thread] NFL Free Agency/Trade Rumors:

They have to do something - Pats are only floating around $4.8m in cap space, still have to add their draft class, and I don't think that number even accounts for all of the known FA signings so far (even if they are likely small numbers). They'll need to free up several million dollars to sign anyone at this point. Hoyer should be fairly cheap but probably at least a couple million IMO. So I'd guess they need to create ~$10m at minimum to be able to sign Hoyer and Wolfe too (if that signing is really happening). Thuney extension makes sense but could also extend or release some other players. Not many though.

It's very likely they get a long term deal with Thuney done sooner than later. That will free up a ton of money. Not to mention the numerous things I mentioned they could do in the thread I created.

Ways for the Pats to create cap space

They could free up close to 19M by extending Thuney, Hightower and Gilmore. Which would be more than enough to sign Wolfe, Hoyer, and the draft class and still have plenty left over for injuries.

This would also leave room for several more relatively minor signings similar to those that we have made so far.

Extending Thuney and Hightower makes the most sense to me. Both are FAs after this year and are both guys that make sense to keep around. Gilmore also makes sense of course, though I'm curious how much he would cost right now on those extra years. If he waited til FA in 2022 he would probably receive a windfall so unsure if he's necessarily inclined to deal unless the Pats want to pay up.

Some other 2021 free agents I'd think warrant looking at for extensions:
- James White
- David Andrews? (depending on health)
- Lawrence Guy
- JC Jackson
- Jason McCourty (1 year to match his brother?)
- Gostkowski (or just replacing him)
- Like all of the DEs except Winovich (they're all FAs as far as I can tell)

Sanders is reportedly going to the saints

Surely, we can find a way to help Tommy and move Edelman to TB (along with the rights to Gronk)

They only "suck" because you don't fit your ridiculous crap. Last I looked, you have ZERO SB rings, have never been to the play-offs (other than buying your own ticket) and don't even work for an NFL team.

All you ever do is ***** and moan about how BB didn't take your binkie. 99.9% of your binkies have not done a damn thing in the league. You continually whiff on guys who you claim are GREAT and yet they don't ever get a ring. They don't make the play-offs.

Yet. You continually rant about how BB sucks at drafting despite your poor showings.

Brady covered up for a lot of BBs drafting woes. Brady’s gone now...

Would you buy a house warming gift for your wife if she left you? Sounds like it.

Agreed. However, there is no reason for the 3 voidable years. The team is more likely to have actual extensions of these players. And yes, there could be voidable years if we need them. Add a Thuney 5 year deal and you'll be up to $25M.

Kenneth's post, and yours, combine to show good reason why the people who were insisting that the team couldn't afford to bring back Brady, and still add/keep pieces, don't pay attention to how the cap works.

:)
The trade has been suggested before; we'd require a 2nd in return.

I was thinking of this thread:
Jules wants out?

Edelman isn't part of the future of the passing offense. If Brady were retiring. I would suspect Edelman might have also. As it is, he would likely play for TB until Brady is gone.

I see us getting a 5th or a swap of picks in the 3rd or 4th.

I'm with you for a #2.

I am all for extending jc Jackson. I think he has proven himself a valuable member of the secondary and deserves an extension.

Sure, but that isn’t going to free up any cap space, and that’s the focus at the moment. I do agree with you that Jackson should be a player who’s kept for the future, though.

They are not mutually exclusive.

cap space will be freed up when bb does whatever comes next with thuney.

if with that extra cap space from thuney, we can extend Jackson, then that is great.

Uh, no. This is not a charity. If they try to trade for anyone on this roster then squeeze them out for as much as possible or simply ignore them. They have zero leverage because the Pats don't need to move anyone.

Sure I would if I got to keep the original house.

If the Patriots are able to extract a valuable asset for Jules (a third rounder would be that more me so that or anything greater I’d do it straight away). Edelman has been superb for the Pats but Brady is gone, we need draft picks and younger players to build towards the next championship.

You are right about the history, but there are exceptions to every rule.

JAX just found a 6th round QB last season (Minshew) who has beaten out a 1st pick of the 1st round of the draft guy (Winston).

Money is a part of that equation, but we all know NE is in the red cap wise after our recent run of 3 out of 4 SBs so money will be a factor for us too.

You're mixing up teams. Winston played for Tampa.

Yep, you are right, I had a brain fart.

Still, we have a team that appears to be going with a 6th rounder ( ref: Gardner Minshew - Wikipedia ).

NFL talent evaluation isn't perfect.

Talent evaluation is not perfect, but Minshew is probably not going to amount to much and the Jaguars are probably at least halfheartedly looking for an upgrade. And I like Minshew. More than Stidham, in fact.
