It's a play that's seen maybe 3-4 times across the entire league per week. And it's not violent like you make it out to be. 10 of those guys are just trying to go after the ball. If such a play can't be tolerated, then what's being done about rest of the far more physical and frequent plays in an NFL game?

I hate to poo poo on those who want to blame this suggestion on teams like the Chiefs or people like Polian, but this was actually suggested YEARS ago by our brand-spanking new Defensive Coordinator, Greg Schiano:

In fairness to him, it was a response to the talks and whispers that the NFL would (eventually) remove the kickoff entirely, so something had to be put in it's place that still allowed for low-percentage play to get the ball back in desperation times.

And before anyone jumps on me, I'm NOT advocating for this change (though if the kickoff were abolished, this is my "favorite" option to replace it), just a heads up to those blaming the rest of the league when the origin of this idea is now in our backyard.

I'm generally in favor of getting rid of the onside kick but I'd like to do it in a way that doesn't dilute the importance of special teams.

From an entertainment perspective it has merit. A game really won’t be over when a team has the ball and is down two scores.......but the problem from a pure football sense is that the game probably deserves to be over.

It’s like intentional fouls benefiting teams in the nba.....while it keeps teams in it.....it goes against the spirit of the game

Yeah, keep giving the losing team more chances to win- make the rest of the game more and more meaningless to add a few seconds of excitement at the end.

What about the SURPRISE Onside Kick, like the one that Sean Payton pulled on the Colts?

That wouldn't be possible with this new rule.

Well, technically the team that just scored does have the ball. However, to maintain possession, under current rules, that team has to kick the ball off the ground for a distance greater than ten yards and recover that kick.

That said, I don't like this suggestion because it puts the other team (on "defense" in the "4th and 15" scenario) in an unfair situation.

The team with possession on offense has nothing to lose with aggressive play by receivers or blockers. They can push off, hold, do almost anything because they have everything to gain; if the penalty is called, they're no worse off than they were before. (I'm assuming that this is a situation where the "kicking" team has no choice but to score or lose the game.)

On the other hand, if a defender holds a receiver, is judged to have committed interference or done anything (like Roughing the Passer) that brings with it a 15 yard penalty or an automatic first down, they're screwed.

I’d say it can’t happen because it’s so stupid, but that hasn’t stopped the nfl before.

Does anyone recall my Modest Proposal thread to remove the defense from the field?

If they’re smart, every team in the NFL will be hiring seven rocket scientists to scheme up 15-yard plays. This has potential to fundamentally change the game.

The onside kick was the most interesting play in football. They couldn’t figure out a way to use the same concept with safety protocols?
